1987 Presentation Day

 

Many of our junior players and their families attended the Presentation Day held at Tregenza Oval on Sunday 27 September. During the day the two Under 10 Teams played a friendly game which, after the scoring of a number of tries by both sides, was declared a draw by referee Alastair Young.

After a game between two mixed age teams of Under 12 and Under 10 players, which was refereed by John Brown, Club banners were presented to all juniors who played in the Under 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 teams during the 1987 season.

The Tackling Trophy for the Under 10 Blue Teams was donated by Mrs. Joyce Spry. The final event of the day was a game of New Image Rugby played between mixed aged teams from all the age groups.

This was the second game of New Image Rugby played by the juniors. New Image is a game for players of all ages and both sexes, playing in mixed teams. Tackling is restricted, in order to greatly reduce bodily contact, to a 'hands an the hip' tackle. On being tackled the ball carrier must pass the ball immediately. This eliminates rucks and mauls.

Scrums and line-outs are still a factor in the game but only the team feeding the ball may strike or jump for it. This reduces bodily contact but retains the important elements of tactical defence and running attack from set play.

Games of New Image will be played at Tregenza durinq the next two months, starting on Thursday, 15 October, from 5:30 onwards. If any adult players or girls and ladies wish to participate they will be welcome. The games will be organised by our Under 12 Coach, Lee Lechleitner (ex-Randwick).
