In typical fashion the first games for all sides were abandoned without a ball being bowled - due to rain. The first team had one day's play against Plympton High O.S. After losing the toss we were asked to field on a wicket which was a batsman's paradise, OC's shot the opposition out for 192 - an excellent performance considering the nature of the wicket. Milton Rattigan bowled superbly and finished with brilliant figures of 8/60. Grant Rattigan made it a family affair by taking the remaining wickets (2/50). In the last half hour before stumps OC's made 38 for the loss of Phil Glatz (22 runs) and were looking good for the second day but - then the rains came!

OC's welcome new cricketers to our fold. We trust they will enjoy their cricket and make many new friends at the Club. They are:

  • Mark Crawford
  • Phil Glatz (returned to the fold)
  • Neil Anderson (brother of Paul)
  • Darryl Downie
  • Dave Haydon
  • Brian Jones
  • Lee Bennets
  • Peter Leighton

Remember that subs. are due. Please pay to our new treasurer, Chris Woodlands, or to your team captain.

The first cricket barbecue was held at the Club on Saturday 17 October and a great night was had by all. Thanks especially to Sabine Cranna whose culinary efforts made the evening such a success. Sabine is also busy organising afternoon teas for the cricketers and anv help which is offered from other cricket ladies would be greatly appreciated.

The cricketers will sponsor regular barbecue evenings during the season. Starting time for meals is about 6 p.m. and prices are $4.50 (full meal) and $1.50 (sausage and bread). Come early and support the playing teams. Dates are listed at the end of this newsletter.

END OF SEASON THOUGHTS

There is no doubt about it, this has been an excellent season for all three sides. The atmosphere at the end of the season is one of optimism for next season, which is obviously better than previous seasons. As Chairman of the cricket side, I would like to thank some people for our success.

Firstly, I believe we have had three excellent captains, who have commanded the respect of their men throughout the season. Even with the advantage of hindsight, I could not have picked three better captains than Dave Harford, Neil Pollard and Tony Jellicoe.

Secondly, thanks must go to the new members who have joined our ranks this year. Their enthusiasm and team spirit has been great. We look forward to carrying on our association next season.

Thirdly, thanks must be paid to Peter Allen and Old Collegians Rugby Club. Very few cricketers realise that without their financial help we would struggle as a cricket club They provide facilities and people throughout summer to the benefit of the cricketers but to the cost of the club. In our defence. we have managed record takings over the bar this summer, which has helped narrow the gap. To the Rugby players, who have attended our social events, many thanks. I would like to think the cricketers can support the Rugby social scene with similar enthusiasm. To Kevin and Dennis for all their help behind the bar, doing the teas and looking after the ground. There can be no finer praise than to listen to all the visiting teams say this is the best ground, surface and amenities in the Association.

Finally, to the committee for their help in assisting me through my VIRGIN season as Chairman. I only hope the plusses have outweighed the minuses. Have an enjoyable rest and remember you are part of a club which carries on playing during winter. Come down, have a beer and give the rugby players the support they have shown you.

HAMISH.

Position in table - 3rd. We scored an outright victory against CommonWealth Bank after losing the lst Innings.
Scores: Old Collegians 61 (Ist) 172 (2nd), Commonwealth Bank 80-8 DEC (Ist), 72 (2nd)

Greg David returned his best haul for the Club (8-38) and played really well. Current game against Tea Tree Gully (1st day). Old Collegians 285 for 9 declared. Greg David made his maiden century (101) for Old Collegians and rescued them from a shaky start (4-25). Useful contributions from Mike Sara (49), Dave Harford (33) and Hamish Cranna (35 Not Out). Tea Tree Gully and 1-15 so we should get a win here. STOP PRESS: We won outright and are now top of the table,

B GRADE

I have to apologise for losing all the B Grade match reports except for the one brilliant game that they won (convenient, I hear you say).

8TH ROUND

Old Collegians 5/81 DEC and 9/120 Defeated Woodville Rechabites 79 and 9/121 DEC OUTRIGHT

BATTING;  BOWLING
N. Pollard 35;  Stewart 3/26
G. Stewart 27 NO;  Turner 4/35
J. Turner 14 NO;  Cartright 3/22
S. Porter. 12 NO;
.D. Thomson 11

Well with a surprise turn of fortune we turned the corner with a wonderful outright and if we finish with two more outrights and one first innings win we will be in the finals. The present team have finally realised they can win. They have begun the process of believing in themselves and now realise that some effort is necessary to be successful.

Our batting is still not performing. For too many are not prepared to commit themselves to 'playing themselves in'. Our bowling is sound and with the advent of the 'master aged teacher', is looking lethal for the opposition.

With games against the two bottom sides, outright wins are probable. The final one day game at Tregenza against Grange will decide the final four. We, with strength and courage 'Fortis in Procecca' will overcome and top off a fairytale finish to this season.

H GRADE MATCH REPORTS

v WOODVILLE SOUTH - November 29th and December 6th.

We batted first having lost the toss once again. For the fourth time in a row the coin landed tails up. At 4 for 43 we seemed to be heading for another low score but we steadied with a fifth wicket partnership of 45 between Chris Nailer and the King. At 8 for 122 Don Bartram charged the bowling and put on a rapid 45 run partnership with George Faraden. Our score of 176 was our highest to date.

On the second Saturday we had Woodville South lottering at 5 for 106 despite the fact that Ray Bartram was overwhelmed by Montezuma's revenge after bowling only three overs. Our bowlers were unable to sustain the effort and at tea our opponents were 5 for 106. During the first over after tea the heavens opened and no further play was possible.

Old Collegians 176 (Nailer 36, Bartram D. 38)
Woodville South 5/167 (King 3/52)
Match Drawn.

v GAZA - December 13th and 20th

True to form the captain called heads and promptly lost the toss again. Our bowlers battled against a flood of dropped catches, biased umpiring, and a ball which went out of shape and burst at the seam. Gaza declared at 6 for 211, and removed our top order to have us 4 for 10 at stumps.

On the second Saturday there was to be no reprieve and we collapsed to be all out for 27. In the second Innings we excelled ourselves and managed only 22. It was a game to be forgotten in a hurry from all points of view, not least for the arrogance of the opposition and the wet condition of the wicket after a fine week.

Gaza 6/211 Declared,(King 3/85)
0ld Collegians 27 22
Old Collegians lost outright.

v CLARENCE PARK. - January 3rd and 10th

The coin landed tails up and the toss was lost again. The captain was encouraged to visit the Casino so that the team could make their fortune at two-up. Adrian Timmins returned to form with 39 and dazzling last wicket stand of 29 between Peter Boyle and Ray Bartram saw us through to 135 shortly after tea. At stumps Clarence Park was 3 for 62, off 30 overs despite four dropped catches and umpiring of doubtful quantity.

On the second day the runs came rapidly on a dead wicket and a fast outfield. With only three regular bowlers who were unable to swing or cut the ball and more questionable umpiring, we were unable to stem the tide and Clarence Park declared at tea at 9 for 221. Graham Twartz and Ray Sen opened with a fine partnership of 79 and at stumps we were 7 for 141 after a middle order collapse.

Old Collegians 135 (Timmins 39)
7/141 (Sen 31 Retired)
Clarence Park 9/221 Declared (Sladden 4/86)
Old Collegians lost on first Innings.

v TUBEMAKERS - January 17th and 24th

The law of averages finally worked and the coin landed heads up. We sent Tubemakers into bat and quickly had them 6 for 43 with some fine bowling from Sladden and Bartram. Dishonest umpiring and countless dropped catches (no names!) saw Tubemakers declare at 9 for 159. At stumps we were struggling at 2 for 10.

On the second Saturday, opener Graham Twartz played the Innings of his life as he tried to hold the Innings together. After a 45 run partnership with John Inge (23) wickets tumbled and at 9 for 100 the game seemed over. Roger McDaniel had other ideas and assisted Graham Twartz in a last wicket stand of 24. Graham carried his bat in an Innings stamped with great determination and patience and some fine driving.

Tubemakers 9/159 Declared (King 3/30, Sladden 3/46)
Old Collegians 124 (Twartz 65 Not out)
Old Collegians lost on the firt Innings.

v GRANGE - January 31st and February 7th

Believe it or not - the captain won the toss again! We opened with Twartz and Don Bartram who had a fine partnership of 45. The Innings faltered at 5 for 99 but was rescued by the bottom half of the order. Peter Boyle hit a  blazing 48 not out and shared in a ninth wicket partnership of 56 with Trevor Rawlins. Opener Graham Twartz had another fine Innings.

More dropped catches and incompetent umpiring allowed Grange to have a third wicket partnership of 115, and at 3 for 146, the game was in the balance despite a brilliant run out by Graham Twartz. The bowlers toiled on but now the catches started to stick. At 6 for 190 Grange needed 35 to win with a tired Sladden bowling up the slope and a fresh King starting a new spell at the top end. Top catching by that man Twartz and Adrian Timmins, and tight bowling saw us home by the finest of margins.

Old Collegians 9/224 Declared (Twartz 55, Boyle 48 not out)
Grange 216 (Sladden 4/69)
Old Collegians won on the first innings.
