From The Advertiser of either Friday 19th of October 2001 or the Sunday Mail of the 21st of October 2001:
"Rhodes Scholar's worldly outlook
A Norwood man is SA's latest Rhodes Scholar.
Ben Allgrove, 24, was yesterday presented with the award by the Governor, Sir Eric Neale, at Government House.
The son of an Australian diplomat, Mr Allgrove was born in Paris and moved to Indonesia with his parents at the age of two. Four years later, the family moved to Korea and then Germany in the 1980s.
He was 13 when his parents sent him to board at Adelaide's St Peter's College. After leaving school with "good results" he decided to pursue a career in law.
I knew it would give me plenty of scope," said the University of Adelaide intellectual property law graduate, who has spent this year as a legal associate. Determined not to turn his back on the state that has given him 'so much", Mr Allgrove vowed not to become part of the country's increasing brain drain.
As part of the scholarship, he will begin a two year, post-graduate bachelor of civil law and a master of philosophy at England's Oxford University next year.
From Ben's website http://homepage.mac.com/allgrove 19th October 2002:
'since I last wrote, things have settled down considerably here. Freshers Week was great, but the drinking has had to tone down, as the work has escalated. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, but the workload is large and I will certainly be spending a bit of time at my desk this year. The subjects are fascinating, though. I am taking Evidence, Restitution, Global Comparative Financial Law and International Human Rights and the Law of War. Should keep me busy.
In the first two subjects the guys who wrote the world's leading texts are my lecturers, which is a bit bizarre, but great as well. Today was "Matriculation". That is a ceremony here, conducted all in latin, where we new students get admitted to the uni. We have to wear 'sub fusc" which is formal academic gown. All very fun for a ceremony, until you remember that we have to wear it for exams too! Bit of a laugh, though, as the town, all the pubs and cafes, etc are all full of people so dressed! We've got an 80s party at the MCR tonight. As you all know how much I love dressing up, (note sarcasm) I am thrilled with the theme. It will probably not stretch much beyond a head band methinks. It should be fun, though, and seems to be the social event of the weekend in this town.
I have also started coaching the college rugby team and a few rowing crews at the college boat club. It's good to get back involved, although sport here is not as organised as I would have expected.
My rugby team won its first match last Thursday, although unfortunately I can't watch them actually play due to a lecture clash. The rowing is good because it does force me to get up in the morning, although that is no problem on Mondays when I have an 8am lecture!!
Just found out that I have tickets to the England v Wallabies match at Twickenham on Nov 16, so watch it and you may see me in the crowd!
Shocking about Bali. Going to a service tomorrow here."
