Old Collegians Rugby Union Club

Gordon Bainbridge

Obituary. From AGM February 1972

It is with deep regret that we have to announce the untimely death of Gordon Bainbridge, a long standing and highly respected member of the Club.

Gordon joined the Club in 1968 and played 1st and 2nd Grade rugby, including this last season. He represented the State against the Springboks and in the S.A. State side both at home and on tour.

His attitude to the game and his club was always admirable, and Gordon was only too willing to play in whichever team he was selected. His game on the field was characterised by a coolness unusual to the normal trend, which no doubt helped in his often brilliant play especially in wet conditions.

He played in two premiership sides for Old Collegians and undoubtedly a most respected member of both his team and the Club.

The Club sympathises with his wife Evelyn and the respective families concerned

Soccer Match

Before his death, Gordon Bainbridge had arranged for a soccer match between his side, Gordon's Rangers, and the 301 Allstars.

To perpetuate Gordon's memory the match was re-scheduled and went ahead as planned with the provision of a perpetual trophy, The Gordon Bainbridge Memorial Trophy to be presented on an annual basis for an intra-Club competition. The two teams took the field for what was expected to be a farcical spectacular. However, despite a number of marks, the game was quite serious and well played.

At half time 301 Allstars were leading 3 - 1 Enthusiasm and determination from the Rangers brought the final scores to a 4-4 draw.

A well attended and well enjoyed game, we hope to see an equally pleasing game next year.
