Old Collegians Rugby Union Club

James Diack

James met Bert Rogers when Bert was the Club President at a party somewhere in either 1961 or 1962and he suggested that James go out to matches with a view to doing match write-ups.

James knew nothing about the game apart from having seen Fiji thrash SA. Someone found a copy of the laws of rugby for him, with which he spent the rest of the week reading before going to watch OC thefollowing Saturday. He wrote his report on the Sunday and posted it to the editor, Howard Clay. The Old Collegians Rugby News (later Tregenza Times) was mailed to members weekly and included James' "From the Touchline" articles on every First XV match until the mid-seventies. James suffers from cerebral palsy but in those days he would walk up and down the touchline - but always on the far side for maximum concentration.

In 1965 James won the "Warren Bulley Trophy" for best Club supporter.
James' 21st birthday party was said to be the best attended club function in 1967.

In 1975 James gave up rugby when he decided to upgrade his year 12 results at TAFE evening classes. One of his more successful subjects was economics, and this led him to tackle a part time B.Ec. degree at Adelaide University successfully.

His interest in rugby was rekindled by the telecasts of the 1995 World Cup. James witnessed a few OC matches in the following season, and the year after that he resumed full membership.

James has since resumed writing the 1st grade match reports.

James is employed full time in the finance department at Sheridan Australia, having survived numerous changes of ownership since the end of 1964.

In 2001 James was awarded the club's Canterbury Award. In 2002 he retired from Sheridan Australia.
