In 2010(?) he left Australia for Portugal to coach the Coimbra team.

A equipa sénior de rugby conquistou a Taça de Prata sem ter disputado nenhum jogo. Ainda que tenha falhado a meta de início de época, a evolução exibicional traz otimismo aos responsáveis. Por Fábio Rodrigues

Uma conquista de contornos pouco ortodoxos. Ainda que sem disputar nenhum jogo para a Taça de Prata, devido à desistência dos oponentes, a equipa de rugby da Associação Académica de Coimbra (AAC) acabou por conquistar o troféu. Depois de dia 13 de março a equipa de Valdevez não ter comparecido em Coimbra para o jogo das meias-finais, no passado sábado foi o Belenenses que escolheu não disputar a final da competição.

O presidente da secção, Jaime Carvalho, revela desconhecer a razão por trás da desistência dos adversários e garante que "esta vitória é mais um título alcançado com todo o esforço e empenho da equipa". Já o treinador da equipa, Robert Sadler, reconhece que esta peculiaridade dá "um sabor diferente à vitória" e classifica a situação como "algo desapontante". Contudo, para o técnico australiano este troféu pode ser entendido como "uma recompensa para uma equipa que melhorou muito ao longo da época". Acrescenta que uma prova desta evolução reside no facto "das equipas de Lisboa olharem para a Académica com outros olhos atualmente, algo que não se verificou nos ú ltimos anos".

O crescimento da equipa fica patente nos diferentes resultados alcançados ao longo da época. Se na primeira volta a AAC alcançou apenas três vitórias, na segunda foi derrotada apenas duas vezes. Segundo Jaime Carvalho, este foi um desenvolvimento natural já que 'se trata de uma equipa constituída por atletas e técnicos novos". "Como em qualquer jogo de equipa, tem de haver espaço para o entrosamento", acrescenta. Robert Sadler admite que "a equipa demorou algum tempo a adaptar-se", ainda que reconheça que é uma tarefa difícil para os atletas "alterar o estilo de jogo com que vinham a jogar há vários anos".

Ambição reforçada Para os responsáveis da secção, a melhoria exibicional reforça as expectativas para o que resta da época. No próximo sábado, a equipa inicia a prestação na Taça de Portugal com a receção ao Centro Desportivo Universitário do Porto (CDUP - Rugby), conjunto recém-promovido ao primeiro escalão, em jogo relativo aos oitavos de final. O presidente da secção assume como meta "chegar à final e vencer uma competição importante que não é conquistada desde 1997". Também Robert Sadler se mostra confiante: "neste momento, temos capacidade para competir com as melhores equipas, por isso não há razão para que não possamos chegar à final e vencer".

Jaime Carvalho considera que, ainda que o objetivo traçado inicialmente - a qualificação para a fase final do campeonato nacional - não tenha sido alcançado, a "aposta na mudança no início da época foi boa", já que "a equipa está a crescer e a próxima época será enfrentada com maior confiança". Nesse sentido, está neste momento praticamente assegurada a continuação de Robert Sadler. Também o australiano se mostra otimista: "acreditamos poder pensar mais alto na próxima época".

De forma a alcançar uma maior harmonização da equipa aos métodos de treino e estratégia de jogo, o treinador revela ainda que se adotou um novo programa de desenvolvimento para os juniores, que "irá trazer frutos nos próximos dois anos". "O objetivo é que os jogadores venham dos juniores mais preparados para o estilo que praticamos", finaliza.

The senior rugby team won the Taça de Prata (Silver Cup) without playing a single game. Even though they didn't succeed in reaching the goal set at the beginning of the season, the evolution of their game has made those in charge optimistic.

This has been a rather unorthodox win. Even though they didn't play a single game in the Taça de Prata because their opponents dropped out, the Associação Académica de Coimbra (AAC) rugby team ended up winning the trophy. After the Valdevez team didn't show up on 13th March for the semi-finals in Coimbra last Saturday it was the Belenenses who chose not to play in the finals.

The president of the club, Jaime Carvalho, says he does not know why their adversaries dropped out and is certain that "this victory is one more trophy won due to the effort and commitment of the team". However, the trainer of the team, Robert Sadler, recognises that this peculiarity lends "a different taste to victory" and classes the situation as 'somewhat disappointing". This trophy can be seen by the Australian coach as "a reward to the team who have improved greatly over the season". He adds that one proof of this evolution resides in the fact that "the Lisbon team looks at Académica in a different way now, something which hasn't happened for several years".

The evolution of the team can be seen in the different results achieved throughout the season. Even though AAC managed only 3 victories in the first round, in the second round it was only defeated twice. According to Jaime Carvalho, this was a natural development due to the fact that "this is a team made up of young athletes and trainers". "As with any team game, there must be space for integration", he adds. Robert Sadler admits that "the team took some time to adapt", although he recognises that it is a difficult task for the athletes to "alter the way they have been playing for the last few years".

Reinforced ambition. For those in charge, the improvement reinforces expectations for the rest of the season. Next Saturday, the team starts playing in the quarter finals of the Taça de Portugal, with a reception at the Centro Desportivo Universitário do Porto (CDUP - Rugby),recently promoted to the first division. The president's goal is to "reach the finals and win an important competition for the first time since 1997". Robert Sadler is also confident: "at the moment, we are able to compete with the best teams, so there is no reason why we can't reach the finals and win".

Jaime Carvalho believes that even though the goal initially set - qualifying for the national championship finals - hasn't been achieved, the decision to bet on change at the outset of the season was a good one", since "the team is improving and the next season will be faced with greater confidence". It is therefore practically guaranteed that Rob Sadler will continue with the team. The Australian is optimistic: "we believe we can aim higher next season".

In order to achieve greater harmony in the team regarding training methods and game strategy, the trainer also says they have started a new program for junior players which will "bear fruit in the next 2 years". "The objective is that the players will come from juniors who have been better prepared for our style of playing", he ends.
