Hi Paul
As per usual, attached are the photos from Saturday's game for the website.
This week they were taken not by myself but by young Emily Van Hecke (aged 7) who joined me on the sideline and kept herself amused with my camera while I took the video. It turns out that Emily and family are from the same town as Cranna and the two of them got on like a house on fire. Emily's Mum works with my father and I am busily nagging the whole family to join the club (Under 8s, 10s and seniors).
Either Emily is a prodigy or I have been greatly overestimating my own skills with the camera - some of these shots are as good as anything I have ever taken! I am particularly impressed with the one called "Brad and Hamer" which is a terrific action shot and did not require any cropping or other photoshopping at all.
Carolyn/Wayne - it was lovely to meet you. Emily is a great kid and had us all in stitches. I hope you had a nice time while I had absconded with her and that people made you feel at home. They are generally keen to embrace new people to the communal bosom, but we're all reeling a bit after Micky Finn's death last week and I noticed that the mood in the clubrooms was a little odd.
Let me know when/if you're coming out to training or for a drink and I'll make sure I am there to say hello. I rashly promised Emily that if she plays rugby I will come and watch her so please let me know if she does. Please also thank her for her excellent photo work and let her know that Paul (our webmaster) will shortly be posting them on the website at www.oldcollegiansrugby.org.au ; she can now call herself a published photographer!

Surfing the net again and saw "Offside Sid's" name mentioned. I took great pleasure in playing the odd (mostly social) game with Sid..............usually at the Amateur Sports Club on a Friday night. My favorite story re Sid was one involving Bishop Howell Witt. The reverend gentleman was making a charge on the wing (downhill at Tregenza) with Sid running alongside screaming "pass, pass, pass", to which Howell replied "two Spades!"

Sid Feldheim was the man. He was known for dwelling in an advantageous position in order to take advantage of any situation. I recall him passing me the ball on our defending 25. I ducked and weaved (as you do as a 22 year old), beat the opposing hordes and headed for their try line, only to be met by Feldheim under the posts and told to "give me the ball. I set you up!"
And I did...............such was the power of "Offside Sid"!

I just wanted to say thank you again for such an incredible weekend with the Old Colls. All the lads were so accommodating in the thirds and in the other teams as well for that fact. Hi Paul
I was just online playing with the family name "McCormac" on Google and came up with reference to my Dad in your 1957 Old Collegians Report.
He played for the Old Collegians when we lived in Adelaide in 1955, 56 & 57 and he was in the Army - Captain (Martin) George McCormac. He always used his 2nd name George & not his 1st name "Martin".
He played in the "B Team" in 1957. We left Adelaide when he was transferred to Malaya for a couple of years (where he continued to play RU), then Sydney, Victoria, Darwin and back to Sydney where he retired.
Dad is 87yo (88 this year) still alive, fit & healthy and living on the South Coast of NSW.
I can remember many a Winter Weekend as an 8, 9 & 10yo sitting on the sidelines watching Dad play. It was a Maroon jumper wasn't it?

We lived in Hampstead Gardens about 2 blocks walk from the OG Hotel. I 'think' he played 2nd row mostly.

I started the website initially as a means of putting club history together and it grew from there. I interviewed one of our club stalwarts some years back and he mentioned a number of things in passing that didn't seem important to him but got me jumping up and down. Small things, but they all add up. As do stories of other people, now also long gone, who spent half their lives at the club also starting there as children sitting on the sidelines watching their fathers play. And if their families stayed long enough they also stayed and played through from the juniors to the seniors and some are now bringing their own children back. We're up to the 4th generation now and with a tendency towards marrying our women players, so we're even getting a spot of player in-breeding. Scary.

My Sister has been talking to Dad.
He was Team Captain in 1956 and there was only an A Team. He did play 2nd row. He was in the club in 1955 and in 1957.
Didn't play much in 1955 and in 1957 spent a lot of time as Manager/Coach of the SA Schoolboys RU Team, even took them to Melbourne (on a Train) to compete in a national comp.
So part of 1955 and 1956 were his big years.
I've asked her to contact you directly (Beth Venning), she thinks she has at least one RU Pic from those days. My brother who is 5 years older than me remembers a bit more.
He even met a player from Dad's time in Sydney a couple of years ago - Sid Feldham or Fieldheim or?
Sid has since died.
I actually remember him because he was a particular friend of Dad as they both came from Sydney.
Dad might be the only player left alive from the 1950's!

No, there are a lot left from the 50s. But I have to think about them.
From the 1950/51 team there's Brian King still alive and last thing I noticed he was busy putting his family history up onto the internet. Some of the others could be as well but it's impossible to track most of them down. Len Perkins, sadly, died a few years back.
From the 1959 photo, Bob Burgess is well and truly alive and would be playing still if he had the chance I suspect, as is John Allgrove. It would be good to know of the remainder.
These are the only two photos I have from the 50s - one at the beginning of the decade and the other at the end of it.

Life's good.
Been a little wetter this summer (!!!) - but thankfully much cooler.
Just bought a house (with aircon!!! sounds a silly thing to say as aircon seems standard in SA but there's lots of houses up here that just rely on ceiling fans) and Catherine has started work (for the first time since having Brooke) (yay yay! for the extra income), so there's been plenty happening.
Brooke still at kindy this year - turns 5 in September - but she doesn't start school until next year and will be very ready for it by then (QLD, as is typical, does things their own way and manages to complicate things: if your birthday is on or before 30 June you start school at the beginning of the same year, on or after 1 July you start the next).
Been hitting the gym this year pre-rugby so will be as strong as I've been for years for footy. Strong, but not necessarily fit (that's another matter entirely).
Rugby here is a fairly big commitment as the away games can take 12 or more hours out of your day (which doesn't suit some families - not looking at anybody). The closest game we have is at Gympie which is an hour and a half away - the furthest is at Caboulture which is pretty much the northern outskirts of Brissy. So if you catch the bus you're gone at 9:00am or 10:00am and get back at 10:00pm or 11:00pm you have a long day. Bus trips are good though... Luckily there's only 8 teams so 7 away games.
Played first grade last year (!!!). As a prop (!!! - I must lose weight). We were/are short of front rowers. Did play some games at hooker which suited me much better. So if you know of any decent tightheads travelling to QLD let me know ...
We finished seventh (second bottom) with two wins but we really should have managed fifth. The top four teams (Nambour, University, Noosa & Maroochydore) were a notch above the next four - in my opinion by the end of the season we were almost in a position to threaten the latter two of those four. Perhaps this year: we do actually have a coach this year. Last year we muddled through with some of us more senior guys putting our oars in here and there. So you could argue we were the best self-coached team in the comp.
Looking forward to seeing all four ... oops five (always forget the women) OC teams winning Premierships this year.

I went up to the club a couple of days ago, and met a man whose name is Michael Shine and his son Daniel who were on holiday from Brisbane. He wanted to show his son (who is also a forward) around his old club!
Michael said that he used to play for Old Colls some years ago : 1986 - 1990. It seems that Michael was the Treasurer in 1987, 1988 & 1989. Best Back 1st XV '87 and was quite pleased about that!
He of course asked about the club, and asked after a number of people! Like Hamish, Mick & Barb Finn, Peter Allen, Richard W. & others. I said that I would give you his details and perhaps if you could put it on the Old Colls web-site, he would appreciate it. He would like to make contact.

An unusual request maybe. My other half Mark Doleman used to play at the club when we were transferred to Adelaide for two years on work secondment with Deloitte and Touche (we're talking 94/5 i think - same time as Graham (your first xv coach, I think) and Ollie Porter.
I was wondering if I could get hold of an Old Collegians cap - I think he would love it! If poss, let me know cost etc....... In case anyone's interested we are back in pommyland, Mark is Senior Partner at Deloitte East Midlands, on the board of directors at Nottingham RFC (also coaching minis and juniors) and I was Marketing Director at a law firm in London, before quitting to look after our 3 nippers, Alice, William and Harvey and run marathons.
I think Mark bumped into Ollie at the 2003 RWC, but whether they were too pissed and it was all a dream, who knows?. We also bought a wreck of a car from Peter Forde, a VW and those who were lucky enough to sit in the rear, got to watch the road under the car due to large holes in floor!!. Aah the good old days!

Happy New Year and all that.
Just noticed in your all new BIG web page that we are claiming a "runners up" prize for the Elizabeth Sevens 1966.
Let me assure you that we did indeed defeat a team from Eastwood NSW to win the day! I still have a pewter winners mug in my trophy cabinet.
The team was, if I remember correctly, Bob Forbes (captain), Barry Keon, Ray Turner, Tony Jubb, Dave Farrow, David Le Messureur, Peter Allen and David Quodling.
I quite forget the final score but vividly remember following a centre kick from Forbes to score the winning try (three points in those days!) shortly before the final whistle. God we were great then!
