Joondalup Fundraiser
Dear Kim
RUFC JOONDALUP BROTHERS FUNDRAISER
I am writing this letter to inform you of the tremendous success we achieved with your help in the Fundraiser on Sunday 25th September.
The club attracted several hundred visitors who all appeared to enjoy the day and contribute to the wonderful figure we managed to raise.
The highlight of the day was the Jay Bro's All Blacks V The Rest of the World Brothers, the match was started by the Western Force and Australian star Matt Hodgson who was accompanied on the day by the Force coach Richard Graham.
With over fifty players wanting to play the subs bench was never empty and the on-field friendly sledging of both the Ref and opposition never stopped!
Following the game, which was won convincingly by the Jay Bro's, everyone retired to the clubhouse where individual boasts of player of the day filled the air. We were persuasive enough to ask Matt Hodgson and Richard Graham to sell raffle tickets and all this was done as Matt paraded around the club in Neon pink socks!
The atmosphere was fantastic and the live auction for NZ club shirts drew some friendly banter before the silent auction secured even more donations.
We couldn't have wished for a better day, the support of people like yourself enabled us to host this event and your kindness was a reason that we will be able to present a cheque to T for over $20,000.
This figure far exceeded our wildest expectations and we hope it will go some way in assisting T and his family over the upcoming months.
Our club has been amazed at the outpouring of support from individuals, companies and Rugby Clubs all over the world. We consider ourselves very fortunate to be part of such a large and caring community and part of the worldwide Rugby family.
Please do not hesitate in contacting me if I can provide you with any more information or to lend support in any future projects you may have.
Kindest regards
Sue Harring

Dear Kim
RUFC JOONDALUP BROTHERS FUNDRAISER
I am writing this letter following our telephone conversation on today, concerning the possibility of a rugby shirt being donated. We would be grateful for any shirt representing your club.
The Joondalup Brothers Rugby Union Football Club are based in Western Australia and have formed an excellent family club for members both young and old. The club can boast over 500 players from 6 years old to 55 years old.
The First and Second teams are Minor Premiers this year and both won their respective Preliminary Finals last weekend putting them in the Major Finals.
Sadly it was following these games and after the post match celebrations that one of the First team players, Tamati Timoko (T as he is fondly known) was viciously and cowardly attacked by a gang who savagely beat him and put him in a coma. The assault was that severe that it not known if he will recover the sight in his left eye.
The assault made news headlines with articles televised and published in the press.
Tamati is 27 and is due to be married in November, he's got a six month old daughter, and it is no exaggeration when I say he is one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet. It is not in T's nature to look for trouble and it was an unprovoked attack as he walked home.
The club formed a fund raising committee and will host a fundraiser for T on September 25.
It will consist of a family fun day involving both junior and senior players with the highlight of the day being a Maori Brothers XV v Rest of the World Brothers XV.
The senior players will be donating money to secure a place in the team and each player will be presented with a shirt that has been kindly donated by Rugby Clubs from around the world.
We can offer recognition through our website, Facebook pages and it would be an honor for a Brother to run on to the pitch wearing your shirt.
Thank you for taking the time to acknowledge this letter and we look forward to your help.
Kind regards
Phil Bedworth,
Joondalup Brothers RUFC
Fund Raising Committee.

Hi Paul,
My name is Inge Nieman. I have just spent some time going through the OC website - it was a wonderful trip down memory lane. I can't believe how many faces and names I still remember.
I was the recipient of the Warren Bully trophy in 1993, was the club secretary in 1993/4 as well as sports trainer assistant to Murran Curran in '93/94 and finally, worked in the bar with John ??? for those two years as well.
I would like to be on your people tracker page. My details are below:

M: 0418 509 507
I would like to congratulate you and the other club members for an amazing effort in putting together the website. I know only too well how difficult it is to gather the history and collate it into a very informative site.
Yours sincerely,
Inge

Hi Paul,
I'm from the era of Hamish Cranna, Danny & Rebecca McCartan (who I am still in contact and good friends), Ollie Porter and brother Nick, Peter Forde, 'Jesse" James, Geoff Holdich, Starky etc. etc. The club was a big part of my life for about 4-5 years. I do have photos - from memory most are from a presentation night at the Feathers Hotel in 1993? Give me a week or so and I will find what I have and arrange to get them to you.
My last visit to Tregenza oval was for Danny McCartan's 50th birthday. It was fabulous to reconnect with some old friends. I have lived in Melbourne since 1996 and have earlier this year separated from my husband - hence my need for time to locate the photos - they are all boxed up! I noted you mentioned that you have just returned to Melbourne - do you live here?
I also noted that OC are celebrating their 75th anniversary next year. Are there any details as yet of functions? If possible can you please keep me up to date on any celebrations as I would love to attend.
Cheers Inge
Grand Final
A message from Owen Clark:
As a member of the 1981 winning GF 2nd grade side (& I think the last) I wish to pass on my best wishes to the players, coaches & officials to both the 2s & the 1s for next weekend. We are the Old Collegians, we come from cultured regions...... :p
A message from Tim Austin:
Great stuff College...Cant remember when this was last done...bring it home lads. I expect people to be hanging from the rafters with the silverware
A message from Simon Macklin:
Congratulations to 1s and 2s on making the Grand Finals. Comiserations to Ladies and U14s as defeated semi-finalists. Best of luck on Saturday. Go College!
A message from James Diack:
Congratulations to the club for the success in getting so many teams into the semi-finals this year. May the two teams in the respective grand finals give of their best at the weekend.and strive to win. Go Colls! :-)
A message from Paul Hamer
Good luck lads! Take on the advice and listen to the words of friends, family and team mates. Just remember the words are there to prompt actions, and only your actions on the day will get you to the trophy at the end of the day!
A message from Alexander Voreqe Rokobaro
Lads!
Don't really know what to say!
I'm sure all you boys in 1s and 2s already know how big tomorrow will be.
As a team and individually you guys have come so far not only this season but previous seasons aswell.
Many of you have been in this situation before maybe not in the same team (or even sport). For some you have been so close and just fallen short. If anything take that as inspiration tomorrow when you go out there and for 80 mins show that you deserve that flag.... not only for yourselves but for everyone at old cols past an present.
I have no doubts that tomorrow there will be times where you will be in pain but remember that pain is temporary.....but in saying that you need to be willing to overcome it.... Willing to pick yourself up after every tackle and make another.
Boys remember 80 minutes...... To create a memory that lasts a life time.
Good luck. From the Bulas
A message from Paddy Williams
All the best lads! Soak up the experience and enjoy it. Don't focus on the end result, focus on all the small things and you will be there at the end. But again, for those that haven't been there before, enjoy the experience! You deserve to be there so nerves shouldn't be an issue
A message from Belinda Rowland
GO OLD COLS BOYS tomorrow - Good luck
A message from Ben Hamer
Good luck this weekend boys. Remember there will be no games next weekend. Play to the death, take what you can and give nothing to them. Enjoy it, they don't come every year.
A message from Andy Farquharson
Sensational work boys, bringing it home strong with the 1's & 2's! Keep the momentum going, it's not going to get easier this week. Do the work, hurt yourself to finish every job and take responsibility on the day. You will be feeling no pain when you are hanging from the rafters with the silverware! Good luck!
A message from Shaun Gough
Congrats to the 1s and 2s on making the big dance this weekend! I'm stoked for you!
Even after the better part of 10 years of leaving Old Colls I still puff up with pride at the thought of the place, and the people = the club. I encourage you not to take any of it for granted.
But you know full well, making a GF ain't enough. Not even close.
Avoid being naive and thinking you deserve this...you don't (not yet).
You gotta prove you're worthy of it.
Life's made up of the things you can control and the things you can't - this is one of the things you get to control.
Personally make sure all your hard work & talent and that of your team mates, coaches, support staff and supporters gets a fitting finale.
Frankly...I bloody LOVE the idea of 91-01-11. But right now, it's still an idea.
Finish what you started.
As one smart coach once said to me "you're a long time retired..."
The greatest of luck!! (everyone needs some)
We've received messages wishing us luck from a couple of our far flung friends:
- Jeremy "Mad Dog" Allport suggests watching last weekend's Wallabies game for inspiration;
- Tim Wonders writes "Congratulations for what has already been an outstanding year, notwithstanding that it's about to get a whole better! Shamefully I am not with the club this year but my thoughts and well wishes are so, please pass on my support to Mike, the boys and the club in general."

Hi Kim,
Thanks for your email re training but I would like to be excused this season as I am 74 years old & would find it hard to pack down in the front row of the scrum.
Please send me details of your programme for the rest of the season & I will try & get down to a couple of games.
David Stewart-Jones (Very Old Collegian)
BEST WISHES FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON.
This was in response to a global email about getting down to training

Hi Kim,
How are you?
Feel like I have fallen off planet earth, but no, still alive and cycling/playing golf!
A note to say congrats to Matt Bautz, Stew Nutt and Soshi Eto on their selection to the SA Schoolboys squad and also to Chris Hodgson (Burnside baaaaah) who knows all he knows about rugby from his early days at Old Collegians.
Jack played his first game for Sydney Uni 4ths and defeated Parramatta 52-0 in the first game of the season.
Billy having a blast and kissing girls in the UK. Is playing agricultural rugby in Kent with the local village team. Poor quality but they are paying for him to tour to Portugal for a few days in the next school holidays. Can hardly keep track, Paris, Portugal, Gallipoli, Twickenham (3 times inc Crusaders v Sharks - "best game I have ever seen"), Premier league soccer and so it goes on.
Good luck with the season and will see you up there soon.

Hi Paul
My father, John Brown, was a player in the club from 1960 to 1971. He is here for a holiday and was talking about his time playing for the club.
Are you in contact with other members from that era please? Is there some sort of alumni?
He is here in Australia from Europe for a month and just talking about the old days... sorry if this is a bother.
Thanks

Not a bother at all, Kylie, quite the opposite.
I'll put something up on the website & meanwhile ask who from our club can contact some people.
Who does your father remember in particular?

Hello Paul
John is in his early 70s now so he is concerned many might not be around any more. He remembers Alan Langridge (deceased), the coach was Burt Rogers, but sorry he can't remember any other names. Not much help I know, but it was 40 years ago. That was why I wondered if there were any lists to jog his memory.
Thanks
Kylie
Kylie,
Well Bert's deceased, but I met David Rogers last year. Bob Burgess is well. Cyril Campion is likewise with his grandson playing.
There's a search field at the end of the web page. Ask your dad to pop in a few names, unusual Christian names will do it or last names. And we have
the team photos from those days athttp://www.oldcolls.org.au/photos/teamgallery/index.html for different decades.
And any history your father has from those days, verbal or written would be appreciated.
When does your Dad leave? Where is he living in Europe?
He must come down to the club before he leaves.
Paul

Paul, point to a photograph and I'm sure I'll remember. Better still, how about getting him to the club one Thursday night or Saturday? There will be several people, I'm sure, who would go out of their way to welcome John Brown back.
Some of us irregulars would have to know the date and time, of course.

hi paul
I think I may have been a selector in 1967, I remember John as a fairly quiet guy.
In the photo he is beside Dick Chalmers (richardchalmers@hotmail). Others I recognise in the photo who may still be around, include Malcolm McQueen, Don Backler and Chris Sweeting.
Unfortunately quite a few of those in the photo are no longer with us including Merrick Goodwin, Ron Cameron, Mike Langridge and Micky Finn, not to mention all 5 of the committee men in mufti!.
I will be in touch with Bernie Dirikis, who was in the side at the start of '67 prior to his working at Dampier, during the week and will see if he remembers John.
Let me know what happens re meeting up and I will try to be around
regards

Hi Paul,
Sorry for the delay. Have been away for a few days attempting to be retired, but no such luck. Dorothy and I now live in the Hunter Valley having moved from Adelaide in 1971 to Melbourne and then to Sydney in 1978 where we were until 2003. Now loving it in semi-retirement amongst all the grape vines and accommodation businesses in Pokolbin.
We both have some great memories of our Adelaide days and still keep in touch with a few of the Old Collegian's crew namely: Bernie & Anne Dirikis, David & Sophie Quodling, Peter & Wendy Goodwin, John & Ronda Booth, Bob Burgess & Ted Apted (both of whom I worked with in CSR). We actually had an Adelaide reunion (Anzac weekend 2009) of several ex-residents of the 69'ers (69 Portrush Road, Payneham, which was a house made up exclusively of rugby playing bachelors) where we had great cameraderie and wonderful parties which always went on 'till the early hours of the morning singing bawdy rugby songs. Most of us now living away from Adelaide had never seen the Clubhouse where we were welcomed and treated royally whilst we scanned all the photos and memorabilia on the walls. A nice touch to a great weekend.
Now, regarding John Brown. I have attached a copy of the same photograph "B Grade Semi Finalists 1967" with all the names printed at the bottom and this shows him as D. Brown and if my memory serves me correctly I always thought he was a David Brown (or am I only remembering the tractor brand). Can't say I knew him well but think he and Brian Cutting played on the wings and I played fullback. Norm Gomm and Merrick Goodwin also played with me in the "A Grade Division 11 Premier team in 1965". See 2nd photo attached - now that was a "Bloody good" team with the likes of Bob Forbes, David Quodling, Bob Burgess and Dave Farrow, all of whom were first class players. Those were the days and unfortunately the last of my rugby playing was in the B Grade 1967 team, although I was manager of the 4ths for a couple of years thereafter.
I hope some of this will help Kylie and her Dad to jog his memory of those bygone days and let's hope you can find a few of the Old Bast...s to join him for a drink or two to celebrate his visit.
Cheers and regards to you all.

Hi Paul,
No problem with adding my email to your email & letter section of your website. I have a quick look at it occasionally but after nearly 50 years most of the current stuff doesn't relate any more.
I'm sorry you didn't get the full photo showing the teams, names and years at the top. My scanner is not big enough to cover it all. By the way, I did keep a diary at the time and have newspaper cuttings of all the Rugby results for the 1965 season if you are interested?
Yes, we do have all the open-cut coal mines to the NE of us and set to expand and we also now have the threat of Coal Seam Gas Mining bearing down on us from unscrupulous energy companies who don't give a damn about communities like ours. We are putting up a fight though and with large protest rallies and and a huge groundswell from affected communities Australia-wide we are starting to win some concessions to their steamrolling efforts.
Nevertheless, we love it here and despite the fact that we still enjoy your wines from the Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and the Barossa we do make very good Semillon and Shiraz which I believe are as good as, or some even better than, what you have there.
Bernie Dirikis lives in Victoria's Mornington Peninsula and without doubt they produce the best Pinot Noir around.
We have been lucky to have spent 7 or so years in SA, Vic and NSW wine-countries and have even visited the Margaret River area 3 times so wine must be in our blood.
Cheers,
Richard Chalmers

Hi Paul
I do not think that there will be an extra turnout on Thursday re John Brown - the only people that can remember John are the Campions Snr., Bob Burgess and Barb Finn, who goes to gym on Thursday evenings.
I have just learnt that Don Backler, who is in the photo and is still in Adelaide, is having heart problems.
I have to say that many of the more mature in the photo are dearly departed!
Never-the-less, I am sure that John would still enjoy visiting the Club and would obviously be made welcome.
Jill and I will be there.
You may wish to send Kim some details to put in the OC Weekly News, if John intends on coming on the 17th.
Cheers
Peter
