Old Collegians 7 v Onkaparinga 43

Tries: Maxine Moran

Conversions: Sian Beavers

Best Players: Lusia Raikiwasa, Maxine Moran (Irish), Ebony Tonkin and Elena Casciano

Well it was a tough day in the semi-final for this year. The team was under pressure from the beginning of the game for two reasons, firstly the injury toll from last week with two players Kate Reynolds and Tara Paige being out with injury which in both cases required significant medical treatment and surgery, and secondly a big Onkaparinga team which caused us to spend most of the first half in our own 22. The defence put in by the team was marvellous but this caused its own problems in the second half with high levels of fatigue. A highlight of the performance in both halves was the scrum which consistently out scrummaged the opposition.

At half time we were down 12 - 0.

The second half had a positive start for us with a quick try to Irish and a conversion by Sian Beavers. After that however, Onkaparinga stepped up a gear and ran in 5 tries and converted 3 of them. Their big backs simply dominated us. It was a valiant effort from a great group of Old Collegians but at the end we were overwhelmed by a stronger opponent.

U16s

Old Collegians 30 v Brighton 24

Tries: Magnus Illman (2), Rory Illman (2), Ben Viljoen (1)

Conversions: Ben Viljoen (1)

Penalties: Ben Viljoen (1)

Who would have thought after 3 losses to the Wasps, being plagued with injuries that on a sunny day, perfect for running rugby Old Colls would stir the pot with a heartfelt victory. This side has shown character this year through adversity and today was no exception. Brighton came out to control the match and tighten down the hatches rather than elusive quick running. Before long ill-discipline cost Collegians 3 penalties as Brighton tried to emulate really sensible rugby. However after several phases and dare I say passing, the ball was moved wide catching the marauding Brighton pack off guard and Magnus slipped through for the first try. The crowd erupted. The pack slow to get off the mark but strong at the scrum started to work better with great tackling keeping the handy Brighton back row under close observation. Further work provided Rory with his first try from full back or was it wing or was it centre, who knows? Again speed allowed the Brighton defence to be broken together with clever footie skills. The highly dangerous Brighton midfield for the most part was not allowed to control the game and were shut down before they had a chance to run. But then Brighton pushed over for a try and again OC were found waiting at the break down, not claiming easy ball but ball watching instead. Brighton capitalised on this meaning extra work to tackle and retrieve ball in the maul. WE NEED TO WANT THAT BALL AT THE BREAKDOWN BOYS! Early driving in twos and threes will allow the team to have much greater momentum against bigger packs. Great tackling day for Brad and Ben who worked tirelessly with Tom pushing the ball forward. Another great catching day for Harrison the Hairy one taking good ball into contact, although sometimes lacking support. James R, another great effort getting closer to the try line glory. Back row all over it- Dougie, Alfie and Austin with even higher work rate and discipline again required against the large Burnside pack led by the big man with the verbal. Great game Paddy, again under lots of pressure. A penalty saw us keeping tabs on Brighton.

In the second half Brighton gained a try from their No 10 after several attempts at the line and great defending form the pack. This was a close one. With paucity of clean ruck ball and the referee now turning his close attention to us for offside positions following ill-discipline (referees are always right, like your mother, SO NO BACKCHAT) this was going to be a hairs breadth finish. A further penalty to Brighton and then two monster tries form the Illman brothers plus one disallowed meant we were in the lead and suddenly the calm veneer of Brighton's senior players started to crack, as did their structure like the walls of Jericho. A cracking tackle by Seaton on the try line helped save the day with great back up tackling. Such spirit won out. Great shut down and linking from Ollie. Awin again put his head on the line with somewhat nasty consequences for him and Campbell shone, snuffing out his opposition. The Cliff ran outside his markers making great ground and opening up the opposition. It was tough for those who didn't get on from the bench, Adam and Marcel are always there and I know the coaches would have been torn as to what to do, so apologies for this week. With fulltime, much to the disbelief of the crowd instead of kicking it out OC insisted on running the ball and with great relief Ben V scored, absolutely sealing the game. The birds sang, the wind calmed and all was good as the team trotted off for debriefing and a cup of cocoa.

For Friday night, SECURE YOUR RUCK BALL, keep passing, be nice to the ref because you know Burnside will be in his ear all match. Work in pairs and shut down tackles are going to be crucial.

1st Grade

Old Collegians 17 v Onkaparinga 15

Tries: Henry Nutt, Chris Bartlett, Karl Edgar

Conversions: Will Sadler

Best Players: Henry Nutt, Timmy Chew, Delano Leen

Old Colls, Onkaparinga and Burnside were the top 3 teams of the regular season, with Onkaparinga and Old Colls finishing 1 and 2 respectively for the places in the first final. The game was tightly contested and could have gone either way in the last few moments, but Old Colls were able to close it out to earn a week off and a place in the grand final. Onkaparinga will now play Burnside this weekend for the other grand final spot.

There were limited scoring opportunities in a very physical first half as both teams exchanged possession and territory, defended well and tried to gain some ascendancy at the breakdown. After about 20 minutes Old Colls worked their way down to the Onkaparinga 22 and settled, gradually making ground in close with successive rucks from the forwards, before centre-field hit-ups from Macklin and Leen pushed the defence back and the ball went wide for Bartlett to score in the corner. Onkas attacked well from the restart, earning a penalty and kicking to a lineout just off our line, from which they drove a maul and scored off the back. They were over again soon after the kick-off, finding a hole in the defensive line near halfway and then supporting runners went wide to take a 10 - 5 lead. Old Colls had their chances on attack in the last 10 minutes, spending most of it in the Onkaparinga 22, but Onkas held out a series of drives from our forwards and we were not able to convert the time in the red zone into any further points before the break.

Old Colls started the second half with purpose, but in the first 10 minutes we couldn't quite do enough to finish 2 good chances. Our strong pressure in the chase helped us to regain possession from the kick-off and we progressed to cross the Onkaparinga try line, only for the try to be disallowed for a knock-on. We kept attacking and Onkaparinga cleared long on several occasions, one of which was fielded by Nutt who evaded his way back into Onkaparinga territory then popped to Sadler, who made it and dived over the try line, but unfortunately was called back for stepping into touch. Onkaparinga fared better after they got the ball back, ultimately scoring another try to extend their lead to 15 to 5.

Onkaparinga worked hard and kicked strategically well to keep much of the play in our half, but eventually we were able to run the ball back over half way and Leen found space to break the line, linking up with Edgar who, with 30m to go, gained a boost pushing off the last defender and scored. Sadler made a valuable conversion to give Old Colls some good momentum, and Onkas were showing signs of frustration as they conceded a yellow card for a high tackle. Sadler kicked to give us a lineout 10m out and the forwards took control to patiently maintain a driving maul, marching over the line where Nutt touched down to take the lead. With only a couple of minutes to go, Onkas put the restart out on the full for an Old Colls scrum, but Onkas made a turnover for one last chance to reply. A big tackle by Bartlett forced a spill and another turnover, and Old Colls ground out the remaining time with more rucks by the forwards.

Old Collegians 38 v Woodville 5

Tries: Sadler (4), Raikiwasa (1) and Beavers (1)

Best Players: Raikiwasa, Beavers and Wade

In a rematch on our final's experience last year, the team dominated our opposition. There was a very strong feeling in the Old Colls Group that they were not going to allow a repeat of last year's loss which still rankles.

It was a game of two halves, in the first half, Old Collegians absolutely dominated such that at half time we were up 26 - 0. The second half particularly the first twenty minutes was much tougher with us being under pressure and letting Woodville into the game. The rhythm of the game was also affected by regular stoppages for injuries, the ground was like concrete and this had a big impact on both teams with regular substitutions being required and us sustaining a number of injuries. A request has been made to see if something can be done about the ground before our next match on Saturday against Onkas.

Luisa Raikiwasa dominated the field with big line breaks and fends against a pretty robust opposition in what was an aggressive and fiery encounter, including an incident when a Woodville spectator decided to run on and intervene in a disagreement between Lu and a Woodville player.

d'Arcy Sadler was again brilliant with big runs and terrific tackling. Sian Beavers also covered the field and scored a terrific try in the second half with a kick forward at about the half way point and then ran on and outpaced the Woodville defenders to score and then convert. Belinda Wade was all over the field and in particular put in a try scoring save.

Everyone was sore after the game but very pumped with the result.

U16s

Old Collegians 50 v Barossa Rams/ NEDs 12

Tries: Ollie Horne (4), Magnus Illman (2), Adam Thompson (1), Rory Illman (1)

Conversions: Ben Viljoen (5)

What a weekend to start the finals with Burnside triumphing over Brighton who sustained their first loss of the season. They will no doubt be licking their wounds ready to get back into it. OC were struggling with numbers due to a mixture of injuries, absences including one who shall remain nameless sipping Coke at 27,000 feet. This was going to be tough despite the scores in the past and Barossa/ NEDs looked determined. Battle commenced and immediately there was a determined air to OC and Ollie H was on fire with a brace of early tries followed by Magnus. Ben kicked well and suddenly it looked like the OC team from the beginning of the year. Further pressure despite giving away a lot of weight to the bigger Barossa pack meant there were close misses near the Barossa try line. However reticence to give the ball and use close team mates stopped the onslaught.

The front row worked hard all game sometimes going backwards with the pressure but always contesting Brad, Ben and Tommo. However Barossa hit back through their star jumper and a well worked maul resulted in try one and then try two came soon after.

OC regrouped and with dancing acrobatics from Harrison (where's my headband) and some great pick and drives from James Rees increased the pressure on the enthusiastic Barossa/ NEDs back row. The game looked to be slipping then a great break from Ollie and a phenomenal 10 m pass, catch and sprint from Adam (Whippet) Thompson resulted in his first try. From then on the assistance of injured Austin, helping Alfie (the grafter), Doug (turnover man) and Awin (hitman) who again had a storming game hassling the Barossa/ NEDs midfield, while sometimes behaving like a winger. Rory (Roboplayer) soldiered on with numerous injuries while Campbell played a stunner with great covering and tackling being unlucky not to get a sniff of the try line. As for Michael (the Seagull) we weren't able to see much of the idiosyncratic tackling style he is so famous for but solid defence both at fullback and wing with again great covering. Paddy danced and took no messing from his opposition and dominated around the set pieces when under extreme pressure.

For next week we need to step up several notches, recover and learn that trust in your team mates and moving the ball will ALWAYS win the day.

U14s

Old Collegians 67 v Burnside 5

Tries: James Du Preez, Elijah Moaga, Seaton Siegfried, Lefatu Egglestone, Jacob Osborne and Magnus Duckett

Conversions: George Hewitt and Max Monfries

I am not sure about the boys being nervous in the lead up to this game but I sure was. They had beaten Burnside only recently, however teams will step up their game when playing in finals. This could be quite a challenge for the boys. What a start, Old Colls made a consistent start with some great offensive play enabling James Du Preez to place the first try. The following play had Old Colls again with possession of the ball and within their 10 metres of the try line. Burnside was defending well by holding back and preventing Old Colls from scoring any easy tries. After a knock-on by Old Colls the post scrum play eventuated with Old Colls having ball possession and James scoring the second try for the team. Old Colls were also strong in defence shutting down any quick breaks that Burnside attempted. There was one quick break by Burnside that eventuated in a try. There was some evidence of nerves with a couple of ball handling errors, however these quickly disappeared. There was strong support in the breakdown by the players and some great passing of the ball finding the player who was able to run down towards the try line. The breeze made it difficult to convert however half time was looming and so was the advantage of the breeze.

The second half started in the same manner as the first with the first try scored by Elijah soon after the start. It was successfully converted. The pressure play continued and this enabled Jacob to score another try. Soon after play started Seaton was over the line. This was again successfully converted. Burnside showed no sign of faltering however the consistency of play by Old Colls enabled James to cross over the line for his 6th try of the game. The Old Colls attack continued with Magnus emerging from the bottom of the pack after landing another try. There were a couple of great runs and one by Lefatu putting the ball right under the posts.

U12s

Old Collegians 65 v Brighton 0

Tries: Jayden Ha

ard (2), Carl Arnold, Alecia Pienaar (2), Clayton Dawson, Charlie Macfadyen, Veaco Smith (2), Morris Clementson.

Conversions: Carl Arnold

This week's game was not as closely contested as our previous encounters with Brighton.

The three tries scored in the first half gave the Old Collegians team the confidence and momentum to really dominate Brighton in the second half, scoring another eight tries. The first try for the game was scored by Jayden who cleverly went down the blind side after a ruck win. The tackling of the Old Collegians team was excellent, and I want to mention those that I saw tackle low; Harry List, Bertie, Jayden, Clayton, Meg, Morris, Katie, Charlie and Jemima. I should add that late in the game Jemima was rudely straight-armed in the face, bravely got straight up and went on playing. Morris played particularly well, with committed tackling, intelligent decisions and sure hands. Jock also deserves a mention as a player who excelled himself this Saturday. Katie was a third player who illustrated maximum effort. So many Old Collegians played well it is hard to single out everyone.

We won most of the scrums and rucks and the back line was disciplined and worked well. Stalwart Alecia featured in many an enterprising move as did Veaco and Carl. But what is most pleasing about the details of the game was the coherence of the team. The score of this game illustrated that when playing as a committed team, the under 12s are a force to be reckoned with.

1st Grade

Old Colls 22 v Brighton 25

Tries: Chris Bartlett, Delano Leen, Tim Pickerill, Will Sadler

Conversions: Will Sadler

Best Players: Tim Dawes, Delano Leen, Paddy Macklin

Old Colls had the majority of possession in the first half and set up several promising chances, but were hampered by trying to do too much too quickly, as unnecessary offloads and ball security in the tackle resulted in numerous turnovers that stopped our attacking momentum. We spent significant time in Brighton territory but were frustrated by their defence continually ensuring slow ball from our ruck and we could not convert the time spent into points. Eventually our discipline suffered, relieving the pressure to let Brighton get on the front foot. They made more of their opportunities and, having worked into our 22, scored a converted try just before the half time break.

It was a much better start to the second half. Brighton were back in our 22 for multiple phases early on but struggled to progress any further before a dominant tackle by Hyam and Taylor drove them back out of the 22 and turned over the ball. A strong run from Leen put us over the gain line, then Sadler ran it up wing to the Brighton 22, passed back inside to Leen who was held up just short of the line but managed to get the ball to Sadler who completed the try. Brighton hit back scoring a penalty goal, then shortly afterwards got another penalty and kicked to get a line-out on our 5m line, from which they scored and took a 17 to 5 lead.

Brighton took and cleared the restart back to our end, but Old Colls played quickly and Macklin and Bartlett broke through the defence to make it to 30m from Brighton's line, where Brighton killed the ruck and earned a yellow card. Old Colls kicked to a line-out 5m out which was taken down and shifted to a midfield attack, before coming back to the now vacant wing and Bartlett went over untouched in the corner. The next Brighton restart did not go 10m and from the scrum Leen again crashed through the centres to push Brighton back. His support chased well and Lewis cleared the ruck wide to Pickerill on the wing, who chipped over the top of 2 defenders and regathered to dive over the line and score, leaving us only 2 points behind.

Following a long kick-off, Brighton was the next to score after several phases in our territory. They subsequently attempted to repeat the tactic, but Bartlett ran the ball back around and over assorted defenders to reach halfway. Our forwards cleaned out and rumbled the ball up field where Macklin cut through the defence and engaged the full back, popping inside for Leen to score and tie proceedings at 22 all with Sadler's conversion. Unfortunately, with time running out we conceded a penalty in Brighton's range, which was kicked and Brighton were then able to hold the ball long enough to run out the clock for the win.

Old Collegians 31 v Brighton 48

Tries: Dave Nolan (2); Alex Eames; Matt Sharples; Mitch Sallis

Conversions: Mitch Sallis (3)

Best on Ground: Alex Eames; Mitch Sallis; Sam Walwyn

The Brighton team we faced on Saturday was not so much a Div3 team, rather an all-stars team. From the side it was spotted, recent state players - the full suite of Brown Bros, Wasley, Londema and Ramsay. Brighton claimed it was a "fund raiser" but it would have been polite to include us in their all-stars plans. Specially as this game would not get Brighton into the finals nor would it knock OC from 2nd on the ladder.

We were under strength with players resting niggles before the finals. Brighton ran in two tries in the first 10 mins, most territory gained by relentless hit-ups. Our defence, initially overwhelmed, then started to combat the assault and even won some possession. A penalty placed us well in Brighton's 22 where Sharples sniped at the defence, finding a hole and placing it between the posts. Soon after, the ball was kept alive skilfully across Brighton's defensive line, drawing in their defenders. Nolan was the final recipient and found 60m of undefended space between him and five points. A Brighton prop was binned and despite being a man down, they scored twice in this period. Close to half time, Sharples cheekily ran to the blind side after a scrum win. As the defence rushed to counter, the ball came back to the poorly defended open side for Sallis to score. We were 19-24 down at the break.

Brighton restarted with a rush and it wasn't long until they scored. Eames scored in the corner from a penalty lineout won close to the line. Brighton monstered our scrum and kept rolling forward, spitting out our defenders on their way to another try. 24-38. A Brighton player was binned for tripping and Nolan scored his second from the restart, giving us some hope at 31-38. Not to be outdone though, Brighton scored again twice with their last try brilliantly constructed. The final score 31-48 loss.

Old Collegians 23 v Brighton 26

Tries: Awin Matthews, Brad Killick, Magnus Illman

Conversion: Ben Viljoen

Penalties: Ben Viljoen (2)

This was the last game of the main fixtures and it was great to see the team coming out firing to try and beat Brighton at home. The determination was evident from the start but handling errors and lack of communication at the breakdown, despite some great rucking led to a breakaway try to Brighton to kick off the scores.

However OC were soon back in the game with some lovely attacking moves and Awin had probably his best game of the season to fly down the left wing and score a solo try after the ball was passed cleanly through the backline. He continued to harangue Brighton coming close to scoring more tries later in the game. Constant pressure on the Brighton pack, near their try line brought further rewards with Brad Killick going over after several scrums and repeated infringement by Brighton. A penalty added to the tally and this was shaping up to be a great game. At halftime OC looked to be in charge but the second half saw our tackling fade and allowed Brighton 2 quick tries from their slippery centre. Now on the back foot the boys fought back and Magnus went over to bring the scores yet closer. Another penalty allowed us to edge forward despite some unsportsmanship behaviour from the Brighton supporters and OC tried to hang on. However with just a few minutes to go the slippery one broke our lines and the game went against us. Well done everyone but we need to learn when the pressure is on we need to tighten the game, tackle for our lives and keep calm, slowly increasing pressure on our opposite numbers. Roll on finals, next week is going to be a massive game!

U14s

Old Collegians 45 v Brighton 0

Tries: James Du Preez, Elijah Moaga, Seaton Siegfried, Lefatu Egglestone, Brady Carlson-Stewart and Max Monfries

Conversions: George Hewitt and Max Monfries

This was the final game of the minor round and it sure was going to be a test for the Old Collegians U14's. Their last game against Brighton was won on a 2 point margin and sure they were not going to let that happen again.

The opening kick by Brighton went straight into James Du Preez hands and Old Colls were in attack moving the ball forward. After several possession changes Old Colls were close to making their first try however Brighton regained possession in the Old Colls try zone, carried the ball forward forcing a scrum. Old Colls won the scrum and James Du Preez scored the first try of the game for Old Colls. The try was converted.

The following kick was very short and the subsequent scrum won by Old Colls enabled the following play to quickly pass the ball onto Lefatu who put the ball down over the try line. This try was converted. The Brighton kick was this time deep with Elijah receiving and taking it forward. After several more phases of great play Max Monfries was next to cross the try line. No conversion.

The second half started with both sides defending strongly. There were a series of knock-on's and line-outs as any advance by either team were halted. There was some great tackling from Jack Richards to prevent Brighton gaining any ground. An interesting phase of play had James making ground by kicking and chasing the ball almost reaching the try line but unfortunately knocking-on just prior to reaching the line. The following play with Old Colls in possession making advance in a series of "pick and go" plays concluded with Brady making a well-deserved try. This was successfully converted. The following play to the end of game had Old Colls score an additional 3 tries, one each to James Du Preez, Seaton Siegfried and Elijah Moaga. Another great team effort and now it is time to prepare for the upcoming finals series.

U12s

Old Collegians 19 v Brighton 5

Tries: Willem Pienaar, Morris Clementson, Slade Hollway

Conversions: Carl Arnold (2)

This was a hard fought game. Both sides were pretty evenly matched. Our forwards were winning loose rucks and scrums about half the time. Our backs played with more confidence than the Brighton backline, with less knock-on's and some terrific passing down the line. It is also worth mentioning that our tackling was superior to the Brighton efforts. Very rarely did players from Brighton get to go more than 10 meters forward. A special mention goes to the consistent leg tacklers of our team that I saw, namely Morris, Meg, Harry Rogers, Veaco, Jock and Alecia.

Tom Mocatta helped set up the first try, picking up the ball and running down the line. There was a consequent line out and some forward scrummage whereupon Willem gained the ball, dodged and scored.

Jayden, Veaco and Harry Rogers all had excellent first halves. At half time the score was 5 - 0 our way.

Brighton was the first to score in the second half. Alecia had a try disallowed after a great run. Soon after a tackle by Bert, Charlie won the ball and carried it near to the try line. There was a scrum, some forward rucking, where an offside penalty got awarded. Carl passed to Morris and a try was scored putting Old Cols in front again. The final try was scored after a tackle by Veaco followed by a great rip of the ball performed by Clayton who, then ran and veered 40 metres to near the try line, some tackling left Carl with the ball, which, having crossed the try line passed to Slade, who in turn scored. Well done all, we are ready for the finals.

Old Collegians v Brighton

Coach's Award: Max Cross

Well it was the most anticipated match of the season and the team was ready to go. With all the players keen for a win we started strong, first try went down only minutes into the game and we never looked back from there!! The fact that we controlled possession of the ball lead to an impressive 12 tries to 2 win. All the players performed as a team unit and gave their best.

Congratulations to everyone for a great match, Brighton fought back and played to the end but were overcome. There can only be one trophy on the day and it went to Max Cross who played his best game of the season and was awarded Player of the Match.

The management and coaching team feel like the players moving up to the U12's are prepared and ready to go, we wish them all the best and look forward to next season! Well done U10's!!

U8s

Old Collegians v Brighton

Coach's Award: Jackson Denley

Tackling Award: Mawson Mos

A very hard day at the office for the OC U8s at Brighton on Saturday morning. We were somewhat depleted (12 players only) being without the Welsh Wizard Dyfrig Williams, Tyson Ha

ard, Louis Clementson, Sasha Humble, Joey Corbett and William Deakin coming up against a formidable Brighton with a squad of 19 who, as we found out after 40 mins, each can go! The first half wasn't our best. We struggled to make any progress with Brighton moving up on our line quickly (at times, questionably) and smothering any attempts at creating a play. We found ourselves constantly on the back foot and down a number of tries at half time. The second half was super competitive. The team battled fiercely against a very strong and disciplined outfit in Brighton, who seemed strong all over. It was try for try. Eddie List along Salvatore Costanzo forced their way through the defence time after time. Ivan Arnold tried hard to create play whilst Oliver Collins, Noah Wilson, Joseph Menz etc. all supported the ball carriers in attack and defended tirelessly in defence. Marcus Pickard, for the second week running, put his body (which was in most cases quite a few pounds lighter than the bodies of opposing players running at him) on the line in defence. Jackson Brady and Jack Bell also commendable for their work rate on the morning.

There were two standout players on the day - Jackson Denley who really tried to make plays by hustling around the rucks and mauls and Mawson Mos who, yet again, chased down (mostly successfully) the opposing runners. All in all a super competitive second half in which the U8s showed their toughness and willingness to compete against a very strong, disciplined and well drilled opposition, a very pleasing end to the season proper. We had multiple try scorers on the day again, with Jackson Denley crossing the line several times. We have a Gala Day this coming Saturday to complete the season which I, unfortunately, can't attend. It has been a privilege to work with the kids this season and see their remarkable progress. A big thank you to Corné Arnold for her tireless efforts for the U8s (and the junior club) and to both Charles List and Matt Bell for sharing their coaching expertise during the season.

Old Collegians v Brighton

Coach's Award: Toby Wilson

Encouragement Awards: Joseph Lohse, Anika Sos, Tristan Kidd and Angus Sidwell.

Saturday morning saw another great turn out of under 7s players and families down at Brighton. Again we had plenty of players to field two full team plus reserves.

The Red Old Cols team took the field first and had a bustling run to open the scoring account against a tenacious Brighton side. Scoring went back and forth with good runs coming from a broad range of players.

Next it was the Blue teams turn to take the field and as with the Red team, great running and use of space was seen by the supporters on the side lines. The final result saw Old Cols get up by two tries, great work all players. A good thing to note for this round was that Brighton was able to field two teams of eight players each, great news for further competition next year.

Old Colls 78 v Woodville 0

Tries: Jack Campion, Lee Verrall, Chris Bartlett (3), Delano Leen (2), Karl Edgar (2), Tim Pickerill (2), Will Sadler

Conversions: Will Sadler (9)

Best Players: Lee Verrall, Tim Dawes, James Bradley

First Grade starting debut: Lee Verrall

In the penultimate round game of the season the first grade put in a comprehensive and well-disciplined effort, running in 12 unanswered tries against Woodville. Both sides were scrappy in the first 10 minutes but Old Colls showed more desperation for possession in open play, as Verrall pounced on a loose ball on the half way, which Smedley distributed wide to Pickerill for a 50m bolt down the sideline to score. Our forwards held control of the rucks with quick recycling forcing Woodville to retreat and continuously setting a good platform for the backs to attack, shown from the restart as the forwards drove several phases up the middle, then Edgar in the centres switched back inside to beat his man and the fullback to score.

We maintained the majority of possession and territory for the first half, scoring again after Leen crashed it up from a scrum 10m out, with Taylor linking up in support to get the ball to Smedley, then wide again to Edgar who grabbed his second try. A penalty led to an Old Colls lineout on the Woodville 22, taken down by the forwards and driven to 5m out, before the ball went through the hands of the backs to Bartlett on the far wing for his first try in his return game. Old Colls worked back into the Woodville 22 and were awarded another penalty 5m out, this time electing for a scrum that was driven to the line, where Verrall picked and passed to the backs and Sadler found space to cross just on halftime.

Old Colls increased their lead early in the second half, as the pressure of the chase of the kick-off forced a knock-on by Woodville, then from the scrum Bartlett took off down the blind wing to score. Bartlett was again on show shortly after, fielding a kick in our 22 and running back through 7 defenders to the Woodville 22, then popping to Campion who went over untouched. Woodville's discipline was beginning to fray and another penalty was kicked for a lineout in their 22, leading to a scrum 5m out that the pack drove over and Verrall placed down from eight to score.

Dawes, Bradley and Perdana were enjoying themselves in the front row and won a comprehensive tighthead just inside Woodville territory, with several following phases being driven up in close then Edgar again broke through in the centres and offloaded to Pickerill dropping in to poach his second try. Woodville found it difficult to make any ground up front and elected to kick and chase, but Sadler covered well and marked in our 22. The backs ran it back and made it to the Woodville 22, where after several phases Smedley put Dell into space for his first try. In the last five minutes Old Colls ran in 2 more tries to Bartlett and Leen respectively, both coming directly from the restarts held by our forwards then shifted wide to the try scorers to run them in from our half.

Women's

Old Collegians 52 Woodville 14

Tries: D'Arcy Sadler (3), Belinda Wade, Lusia Raikiwasa, Sian Beavers, Bec Jones and Steph Martin.

Best Players: The team

In a rematch of our last game, this time at Tregenza, the Womens' XV put on a powerful performance with our best rugby of the season being played in the second half.

As is commonly the case when we play Woodville, the first 10 minutes or so of the game was scrappy with Old Collegians playing to the Woodville style of play and not our own natural game taking advantage of our high quality backs. The first try was scored 20 minutes in by Woodville after dogged play by both teams with neither team getting a clear advantage. When we did use our backs we almost always scored. Good defensive counter rucking and some hard work at the breakdown also avoided almost two certain tries being scored against the team. From one of these, D'Arcy Sadler, memorably described by Kim Evans as her favourite Sadler, ran 95 metres to score the try. As we went to half time, the team gained more dominance including strong performances in the scrum.

Half time score OC 19 Woodville 7.

The second half was a different game with a lot of blind side play, again length of the field runs by our backs scoring more tries. The regular use of the bench also provided great support to the team and the heavy work in the front row was shared around with the game, also being the return to the team of Dani Di Girolamo who had been missing for several weeks with injury. The work was built on by some big line breaks and fends by Katie Reynolds and Luisa Raikiwasa.

A terrific team effort.

U16s

Old Collegians 7 v Burnside 33

Tries: Ben Viljoen

Conversion: Nick Barry

With injuries, illness and the ill winds of fortune blowing against us OC went down to the auld enemy coming to earth with a bang. From the outset we went onto the back foot as the veer enlarging Burnside pack trampled their way around the pitch. At one point even TJ their hooker performed a side step, which amazingly was successful and broke the spirit of the team for a while. Quick tries with loose tackling, poor ball retention and wrong options allowed Burnside to gain in confidence and hammer the try line despite the valiant efforts of the forwards to hold them up.

This was not the OC side we had seen in past games but to their credit the shape started to come back with notable individuals fighting to regain control, well done Josh amongst them. A consolation try from such a simple move and quick hands allowed Ben V to cross the line. We need to swoop on players when chasing the ball downfield and make the hits count so there can be no doubt the player has been stopped as ball carrier. Pressure, pressure and more pressure. On a positive note the pressure is now off us as Brighton and Burnside think they have a clear run to the title.

Nothing could be further from the truth with hard work and never say die spirit.

U14s

Old Collegians 24 v Western Districts Vikings 10

Tries: Lefatu Egglestone, Andrew Macfadyen, Seaton Siegfried and James De Preez

Conversion: George Hewitt

This weekend's game was the third match up this season between Old Collegians and the Vikings. The first game was a hard fought draw, the second a runaway win to the Old Collegians and the third would be an interesting confrontation as the Vikings would not let the previous loss go unchallenged.

The game started with the visitors making the first kick and it was now obvious that the Vikings were up to the challenge today. Vikings were very strong in the breakdown winning almost everyone maintaining ball possession or regaining possession at each occurrence. The first 10 minutes of play was spent with each side attempting to make some ground with neither gaining any advantage. Some great tackles from the Old Collegians and subsequent gaining of possession managed to break away from the Vikings tough defence line and Lefatu running across the try line close to the field corner. The ground was heavy and so was the ball and the try was not converted.

Vikings responded quickly finding a way through the Old Collegians defence making a try. This was not converted. The Old Collegians were now looking to gain the advantage and were able to work hard with the forwards gaining possession and Andrew Macfadyen making a dash for the try line. This was converted. Half time score was OC 12 to Vikings 5.

The second half of the game was very similar to the first half. Vikings were strong in defence holding any advance by Old Colls and the Old Colls were also holding the Vikings advance at bay. Penalties by either side produced chance for either side to break away and make a run for the try line. Old Colls managed to hold back the Vikings to only one additional try which was not converted. The Old Collegians were able to cross the line two more times with one being converted.

U10s

Old Colls v Woodville

Another outstanding team performance from our U10 boys and girls. This week we concentrated on support play and the team certainly didn't disappoint. Our forwards played good solid rucks and the backline ran the ball probably the best they have this season. Woodville had a few very big players but this seemed to spur on our team and some fantastic tackling from Alistair Tanner and Lucas Aguiar limited their play. Overall a brilliant performance which saw us run out 8 tries to 1. Best performance of the day went to Sam Brady and Noah Robertson.

Looking forward to our next game versus Brighton away.

Old Collegians v Woodville & Port Adelaide

Coaches Award: Ivan Arnold

Tackling Certificates: William Deakin, Marcus Pickard

Volunteer Players for the Opposition: Ivan Arnold, Tyson Ha

ard, Sasha Humble, Salvatore Costanzo, Mawson Mos, Jackson Brady, Edward List

What a difference a week makes... Whilst the Wallabies went Roosters to Feather Dusters in 7 days, the U8s did the opposite. After lamenting in recent match reports how yours truly thought the team had regressed a little, I'm please to say that Saturday's performance was a significant improvement - perhaps it was the stern words and "brutal" training session last Wednesday (the team was forced to play British Bulldog to finish the session!). Woodville and Port Adelaide both turned up with very strong teams. Both games went try for try and there was nothing in it at the end of each of the 3 periods.

This week all our players tried their best to adhere to the team play - first two at the breakdown cleanout, third picks up and passes, keep the line (that bit still needs major work!) etc. Given the tight tussles, it is difficult to single out players but Ivan Arnold took the trophy home this week for the first time. His passion for the game is unsurpassed - he did the team things this week that made a big difference. Will Deakin worked hard at the breakdowns (trying to relieve the work load of Eddie List) and noticeably lift his efforts to tackle, earning himself a tackling award. Well done to Marcus Pickard who took home the other. Finlay McFayden had a super game as did a number of his team mates. A big thank you also, to all our volunteer players who played for the opposition and to Mark Pickard who yet again stepped up with the whistle.

Final game for the season proper (excluding the Gala Day on 29th August) this Saturday versus Brighton.

U7s

Old Collegians v Woodville

Coaches Award: Oscar Angove

Good all Round Play Award: Hamish Kerr-Grant

Tackling Award: Callum Reeks

Encouragement Award: Ezra Pretorius, Rhys McCarthy

Tries: Mia Aguiar (2), Will Tanner (2) and Toby Wilson (1)

A tight game against Woodville this week who turned out a strong side against our 27 players last Saturday at Tregenza. Round robin as usual. Not a high scoring game for OC as the Woodville size was all over us and their tackles were quick. Mia (2), Will Tanner (2) and Toby Wilson (1) slipped through and used the opportunities provided by their team mates with some decent passes from other players.

This late in the season we are seeing a lot more structure and quality "tackles/touches" and less players off side which means a faster moving game and passing between the kids. Plenty of work to be done on defense as always which shows up against a strong side, however the older kids are getting very confident indicating some are getting ready to move up to U8s. Woodville was a very disciplined team and had some strong and big players. Their standout however was definitely the shortest on the pitch, showing that speed and skill definitely won over size!

Great play from a lot of kids. It is getting very hard to hand out encouragement awards at this stage of the season as there are so many standouts.

Trophy this week went to Oscar for braving sickness and insisting his dad drive down from the hills for the game, Hamish for good all round play on the pitch and Callum for his ever increasing tackling skills. Encouragement awards also to Ezra for his attacking; getting a few good runs in and Rhys for his tackling and increasing involvement in the game. Final score 6/5 to Woodville.

Old Collegians 38 v Adelaide University 3

Tries: Mitch Sallis (2); James Foster; Will McLeay; Cameron Peck; Kyle Fleetwood

Conversions: Mitch Sallis; Sam Walwyn(3)

Best on Ground: Mitch Sallis; Will McLeay; Kyle Fleetwood

Winning the ball from our kick-off leads to several minutes of domination in University's half with University defending effectively and repelling many of our raids. Ten minutes in and Mitch finds his way through the defense and places it between the posts setting himself an easy conversion. University gains possession and holds it through phases, but become frustrated at not making ground and revert to the boot. It takes us a few minutes to work the ball back to University's 22 where scrum dominance feeds a clean ball to Mitch who draws a few defenders before popping it to a fast running Foster who slides through the hole. He places the ball in the Right corner in the flamboyant style we have come to associate with him. A period on indeterminate play by both sides results in University converting a penalty. We work the ball back to University's 22 where, after some scrums, we were in possession and Mitch again breaks the line and scores on half time. 17-3 at the break.

It takes a while for things to settle in the second half, until 'Alfie' takes it 60 metres up the right wing only to be cut down a few metres short. Possession is swapped but University can't make ground and we are playing in their half. It's not long before the pack is rumbling the ball toward the line and Will picked and scored the bonus point try. Some back and forth play ends when a long University kick lobs on Seb who runs it out of our 22, passed to Rudi who gets it close to half way. From here the ball comes Right to Will who takes it down the wing palming off defenders on the way. He was stopped 10 meters out and popped it to Cam who was in perfect position to take it over the line and to the posts for his first senior try. Soon after, some sound phase play saw the ball in Kyle's hands as he placed it over the line. The heavy pitch is tiring both teams as the game grinds to its conclusion. Sam Walwyn converted all three second half tries, showing that he is more than an emergency kicker.

The highlight for management is the contribution of our three U18 players. Seb having his first senior run was solid at fullback. Cam scored his first senior try and Kyle scoring his second in as many weeks.

Women's

Old Collegians 39 Woodville 17

Tries: Bec Jones (3), D'Arcy Saddler (2), Steph Martin and Kate Reynolds.

Best players: Zyggy Sabrina Morrison, Kristie Hume and Bec Jones.

In a rugged encounter with the scores tied at 10 all at half time, the Womens' XV put in a big second half to come home convincing winners 39 to 17 with 5 tries being scored in the second half. We dominated possession and territory for most of the game with Woodville staying in the game with a couple of their big backs causing us difficulty. The team seemed a bit out of sync with some flat passing and played to the opposition game without playing its own game. We also had some injury issues that caused problems with players coming off after some pretty bruising encounters.

Our backs came into the second half with big runs by D'Arcy Saddler (2 tries) combing with her mother Steph (1 try) and with Bec Jones scoring 3. Once again Zyggy Sabrina Morrison was relentless in tackling and heavy work was done by our props with Kristie Hume putting in a mighty effort. A good team result.

Old Collegians 0 v Brighton 10

Alas Fortunes can be fickle as we watched another fascinating tussle between these top two teams. For much of the game the play went back and forth on the University back up pitch, which was way too narrow for our fast running backs. Old Collegians started well and seemed to get close to the line on many occasions, only being let down by lack of numbers at the breakdown with isolation of the runner. Great display by individuals was only let down by lack of pods and pressure around the edges. Great running from Magnus, Ben and Rory with Michael again showing some great flying tackles. Congratulations to Patrick and Campbell who tackled and supported tirelessly with Jasper coming on to provide relief. Great game to Adam who showed vision with his ball carrying and well done to the forwards for good set pieces and close up tackling. In the end we went down by 10 points near the end of a hard game and as one gentlemen said on Saturday it is the final game of the season that really matters so remember that when finals come along.

Old Collegians v Adelaide University

Volunteer Players for the Opposition: Tyson Hazzard, Ivan Arnold, Sasha Humble, Noah Wilson

OC U8s turned up en masse Saturday to play Adelaide Uni. Red and Blue everywhere, including 14 of our U8's. Though Uni had 8 players, enough to play without help, we decided to even up the numbers to get 10 aside going. An even 40 minutes of solid junior rugby ensued. The frustrations (of the Coaches) of recent weeks didn't abate on Saturday. As always, the kids tried their hardest and did us and themselves proud and, as happens each week, we had some great standouts - this week Oliver Collins deservedly took home the trophy for his efforts around the ground including his tackling; Marcus Pickard gave everything he had to try and bring down kids that were much bigger than he; and Jackson Denley came in from the wing and did a lot of hard yards up the middle. Eddie List also needs to be acknowledged for his bullocking efforts and runs. At the end of the day though, it feels like we have regressed in the sense that our best players, and future junior leaders, have resorted to standing next to the rucks (rather than getting in and cleaning out) or wider preferring to wait for someone else to do the hard work so they can get the ball and score. The team efforts that we saw a few weeks back have gone missing (temporarily!) and too many are back playing for themselves. We'll have a think about how we rectify this with two games remaining and recapture some of that scintillating rugby that we all know the group is capable of - playing inclusive, team rugby.

U7s

Old Collegians v Adelaide University

Twenty Seven kids played last Saturday at Waite Oval against University which lead the coaches to pull together 3 teams in a round robin which meant a fresh side against University. Still, University had a strong and big side of under 7's and very aggressive attacking resulted in a first half dominated by a few Uni players and a lot of time spent down on the Uni try line. Strong play from the usual suspects but two surprise tries from Alex Smitham showing great enthusiasm with the ball and PJ Sos with some nifty footwork to slip through two tries in the second half!

Other tries from Jack George and Will Tanner with outstanding efforts from Alex Punshon and Jack Taylor (3 a piece!) showing that whilst we will lose a few of the players to the U8's next year, there is strong promise in the younger players who are starting to really thrive and show the results of a season of hard work.

Certificates for Ezra Pretorius for increased involvement and enthusiasm in his running, Alex Punshon for his 3 tries, Alex Smitham for scoring his first and PJ Sos for getting his first ever 2 tries in one game.

Great effort all round but a close game until the last few minutes. Old Colls' three teams against a strong Uni side, still came out on top 11 to 9.

1st Grade

Old Colls 19 v Burnside 20

Tries: Nick Howlett, Jack Campion, Karl Edgar

Conversions: Stuart Robertson

Best Players: Liam McDonough, Sandy Taylor, Todd Lewis

First Grade starting debut: Karl Edgar

Old Colls took longer than ideal to switch on during the match, configuring to new players and combinations in both the forwards and backs, and in this time Burnside took advantage of some basic errors on our part and ran in 2 early tries. After the second, Old Colls rallied and managed to hold possession long enough to work to the Burnside 22, repeatedly attacking the Burnside defence in close to the ruck, then pushing out wide where Mann found a gap and offloaded to Campion who scored.

In the first half we were under strong pressure in the forward engagements, but good work by Hyman at the back of the scrum, with quick reactions of Campion and Power in the line outs, meant we were able to retain control of our ball and eventually push back into the Burnside red zone. Several more phases took us close to the Burnside line where Howlett forced some space and burrowed over for a try to even the score, before Robertson's conversion put Old Colls in front and Old Colls took the 2 point lead into the break.

Old Colls started the second half with more direction and focus in their attack, but were let down on several occasions by dropped passes and rushed offloads, with Burnside making our set piece work hard when we erred. Notwithstanding this, a scrum on our 10m line was the platform for our third try, as Hyam cleaned up some scrappy ball at the back and took off up the blind wing for a 40m gain, then popped to Karl Edgar to finish the try and extend the lead.

Unfortunately, Burnside was never out of the hunt and made better use of their attacking and counter-attacking opportunities in the last 20 minutes of the game. Following an extended period attacking in our 22 they had a try disallowed for an offside charge down, but kept most of the ball and scored 2 more tries and clinch a 1 point advantage close to full time, and Old Colls were unable to break back in the time remaining.

Old Colls 29 v Burnside 24

Tries: Will McLeay (2); Tom Nutt; Tom Armstrong

Conversions: Mitch Sallis (3)

Penalties: Mitch Sallis

Best on Ground: Derek Lewis; Will McLeay; Tom Nutt

The Burnside pack was noticeably larger than ours and they had reserves (also of admirable stature), but it was quite a different team we confronted several weeks ago for a 2 point loss. From the start, our smaller pack showed great character and showed our opponent that size does not matter. A kick down field had us in Burnside's territory and the pack won a penalty. The lineout close to the line was won by Stephan and Nutt ran it in to score. A scrum won in our half was kicked long and chased by three of our speedsters who spooked Burnside into seeking touch around their 22. Mitch's return was welcomed as with his line breaks and tactical kicking, we were playing in Burnside's half. McLeay scored after a move started by a Mitch line-break. Soon after we won another scrum about 20 out and Burnside concentrated on our No9 Matt leaving a huge hole on the blind for Tom Armstrong to exploit as he dived for the score. Mitch converted 2 of 3 chances in the first half to bring the score to 19-0 at the break.

Burnside applied pressure from the start of the second half and had us scrambling in defence. Burnside won a scrum in our red zone and moved the ball to the right, avoiding tackles and placed it under the posts. From the restart they again applied pressure. The effect of their fresh players was becoming noticeable with our pack starting to struggle, particularly in the recycling. Their strong, but until now contained scrum, was becoming a problem. Even our usual sharpness in the lineouts was dulling. Within 15 minutes, they had scored again, 19-12. We lifted, challenged them and won possession from our kick-off. We moved it through several hands to Will who deployed his trade-mark fend and found the line carrying a couple of defenders with him. Mitch converted and again soon after converted a penalty bringing the score to 26-15. Burnside brought on their remaining subs and was murdering us in the forwards. They read it well and concentrated on punishing our exhausted pack, which did well to restrict Burnside to another 2 tries. The final whistle was a relief for the nervous management. We had done enough in the first half.

Heavy conditions and our lack of subs could well have decided this match, but discipline and grit made it our day. The team deserves credit for a job well done under difficult conditions.

Womens

Old Colls 29 v Burnside 0

Tries: Kristy Hume, Mackenzie Saddler (2) Sian Beavers (with 2 conversions) and Lusia Raikiwasa.

Best on Ground: Ziggy Morrison, Lu Raikiwasa and Nat Vemoa.

In what could only be described as perfect Rugby weather, the Womens' returned to winning form in a grim struggle against Burnside at Parkinson. It was a day for the forwards with a lot of hard work being done at the breakdown and without a lot of opportunity for clean ball getting to the backs. Old Collegians dominated both territory and possession with Burnside only having limited possession and little clear prospect of scoring. The game saw the welcome return of the captain Lusia Raikiwasa after being diagnosed with an ACL injury and her physical presence and speed was a significant contributor to the result. Our relentless no 7 Ziggy Sabrina Morrison tackled all day including against some large and aggressive opponents. A good win in tough conditions.

U18s

Old Colls 10 v Burnside 10

Great performance from our U18s and very unlucky not to have come away with a win. Thank you to the U16s players supporting our U18s on the pitch. The victors earning the right to take on Brighton in the Grand Final.

U16s

Old Colls 26 v Burnside 21

Tries: Rory Illman (4)

Conversions: Ben Viljoen 3

Conditions were not ideal for running rugby as these two top teams touted for table supremacy. We saw a great start by OC with good driving over the ball, strong scrummaging against a larger pack and movement through hands together with strong tackling. However despite an early try from Rory followed by an assault on the Burnside line for several phases of play, no try was forthcoming and possibly opportunities missed where ball to the backs might have had a different result. Some cynical penalties ensued but alas no progress. Burnside to their credit hit back with a quick try while OC were caught napping and continued in the lead for some time. OC were unable to get easily across the oppo's defence line and certainly frustration was evident. Good ruck play at the breakdown from Austin and Doug with the huge Burnside front row being held up by the likes of Alfie, Ollie and others (I can't really see that far away) to stop almost certain tries. Well done to James Rees for volunteering to get back into the front row again.

Burnside scored again with a break away and muttering was heard in the spectator line. However with great character and follow up OC started to rumble again and as we entered the second half, we saw a couple of wonderful moves as well as further spectacular running from Rory who bagged himself 4 tries in the match to push us into what seemed an unassailable lead. Scrummaging improved, support play was wonderful and more careful consideration of options for touch or lineout helped tighten the game up. However Burnside fought back and added a further well worked try before the end of the game. A well won victory but more work and movement of ball through these talented backs is required. Many thanks to all those who helped out this weekend Jeremy Rees for crowd control, the young Arnold so keen to run touch and Brad and Andrew for the BBQ as well as Patricia.

U14s

Old Colls 46 v Burnside 10

Tries: Edwin Dodd, Tane Pardoe, James Du Preez, Seaton Siegfried, Elijah Moaga, and Lefatu Egglestone

Conversions: George Hewitt

The sky was overcast and the conditions bleak, yet there was an underlying optimism with the approaching game against Burnside's U14s as they had lost their last 2 games. The last meeting of the Old Collegians U14s against Burnside was in Round 10 and was in their favour with a 16 point advantage.

Burnside initiated the game by kicking off with a short ball with the receivers taking it forward into the Old Colls 22m zone and forced over the touch line. Following the throw Burnside faulted with a knock-on. After Old Colls won the scrum there followed some tough hard play that moved the ball forward and enabled Eddie to cross the try line.

Burnside re-started the game with a similar kick and again the receiver ran the ball forward with some fantastic support by the forward line and then moved the ball across the field to almost reach the try line under the goal post. A high tackle by Burnside enable Old Colls to resettle and then using the forwards pushed the ball forward. It then opened up and we used the backs to break the Burnside defence with Lefatu making it over the line for the second try.

The next period of play was hard fought with the Burnside's defence working very hard to keep Old Colls from reaching the try line. There were several penalties awarded to both sides. Old Colls maintained the momentum and enable Eddie to again cross the line close to the goal post. This try was converted.

The last try of the first half was the result of a strong scrum won by Old Colls after a Burnside feed and the ball was passed out from the forwards to the backs and Seaton made the run to the try line. I was not able to witness the 2nd half of the game however was informed that the result was a win to Old Colls with the players maintaining the momentum displayed in the first half.

Another great performance by a very focused and eager Old Collegians U10 side.

This was by far the most impressive team effort this season. Some strong running, great tackling and great team support saw us run out 5 tries to 3 winners. Lucas and Jake both picked up best performance awards for some great running and fantastic clean outs.

The coaching team was very pleased with every team member's game and look forward to seeing everyone on the weekend for our game against Adelaide Uni.

U8s

Old Colls v Burnside

Coaches Award: Dyfrig Williams

Tackling Certificates: Jack Bell and Edward List

On Saturday morning the Old Collegians U8s arrived in full strength with a squad of 18 players ready to take the field.

We selected 2 teams to play against the opposition on a quarter pitch which was wet and muddy. Conditions were not ideal for our typical running rugby. The Burnside U8s were more focussed and we saw some strong individual performances from a couple of their players who managed to find some gaps in our traditionally very strong line of defence. At times during the game we showed more direction and focus, but were let down by dropped passes and rushed decisions. We did score some beautiful tries on the day although it was certainly not our best performance this season.

Congratulations to Dyfrig Williams who received our weekly coaches' award, he is a true team player who makes a valuable contribution to the team's performance. Eddie List and Jack Bell were the two recipients of this week's tackling certificates. They both illustrated very sound tackling technique and stopped the opposition in their boots on a number of occasions. We are looking forward to see everyone on the weekend.

U7s

Old Colls v Burnside

A strong field of 24 kids braved the rain against a strong Burnside u7 team. Good leadership from the older kids with sharing the ball around, long runs and some quick footwork.

Late in the season we are starting to see the older U7 kids really develop in their core skills and show their speed and agility on the pitch which shows up a strong distinction between the younger kids. The younger kids follow the team leaders and some of the fundamental skills like passing, getting on side quickly and understanding of the general structure of the game have improved significantly across all the kids making the games much faster paced, more exciting and with a lot more sharing of the ball going around. Strong play from the usual Quillien, Daniel, Alex Punshon, Will Tanner and a trifecta of tries from Joe Lohse. Player of the week went to Quillien Bleakly for consistent play, significant improvement in speed and direction and sharing of the ball. Good evidence of development from PJ Sos with good hands and a fast run resulting in a try for him. Fast runs from a lot of other players, building confidence across the team. Burnside provided strong opposition with some very fast kids and excellent defence. Final score Burnside 7-OC 6.

Old Collegians 58 v Southern Suburbs 0

Tries: Riady Perdana, Sandy Taylor, Gary Mann (2), Delano Leen, Paddy Macklin (2), Tim Pickerill, Will Sadler, Jack Campion

Conversions: Will Sadler (2), Stuart Robertson (2)

Best Players: Riady Perdana, Todd Lewis, Paddy Macklin

First Grade starting debut - Todd Lewis

First Grade return - Paul Ka-Boom McFadden

The first grade lost the first encounter against Souths earlier in the season, so it was important to re-establish our credentials and take away a convincing win, particularly in light of the forthcoming two top of the table games with Onkaparinga and Burnside. The 10 try performance went a ways towards this and notably Old Colls were able to keep Souths from crossing our own line.

Old Colls and Souths traded possession and field position early on, then a good take of a high kick by Pickerill deep in our own half provided a counter-attacking opportunity and the backs ran and passed through the hands across the field, where Macklin found space out wide and broke through to score. Old Colls had momentum from the restart as a chip over the Souths line was chased hard and regathered by Sadler to provide a good attacking platform 30m out, with the following driving phases by the forwards pushing closer to the line until Taylor crossed for a try.

Old Colls used their control of the set piece to retain most of the pill for the balance of the first 30 minutes. In short time the driving work of the forward pods took play to the Souths 22 and Macklin forced another hole in the defensive line to cross underneath the posts. Souths showed their frustration and conceded several penalties, one of which was kicked close to their line where Mann scored from a well constructed lineout. The fifth try of the half came following a scrum on our 10m line, as Leen slipped through a gap and offloaded to Macklin, who occupied the last defender and passed to Sadler to score. Souths attacked for the last 10 minutes and spent considerable time in our 22, but our defence held and we took a 29 - 0 lead into the break.

The first 15 minutes of the second half were scrappy from both sides, but eventually a decisive run from Macklin moved us over the gain line and after several phases in Souths' red zone Smedley put Perdana into space and he crashed over to score under the posts.

Old Colls continued the preference for running play rather than kicking for territory, and the focus on quick phases changing the point of the attack across the field created space and opportunities for Leen and then Pickerill to each score tries.

In the last 10 minutes Old Colls constantly pressured the Souths defence and our forwards ground away to earn two more tries from in close. Firstly, an attempted clearing kick from a Souths-fed scrum on their 5m line was charged down in-goal and Campion dived on the loose ball to score. Finally, Mann made good metres off the back of a scrum in the 22 to be held up over the line, but went again quickly from the next scrum to score in the last play of the game.

3rd Grade

Old Collegians 19 v Barossa 18

Tries: Justin Elder; Dave Nolan (2)

Conversions: Sam Walwyn (2)

Best on Ground: Will McLeay; Justin Elder; Derek Lewis

On Thursday night, yet again we found ourselves short of a back, but with Souths forfeiting Div2, Burgo and Denley were able to help out and make up the numbers. So we started with a strong looking balanced team. We are aggressive from the kick-off and break the line to move close to the Rams 22 where we are awarded a penalty. We win the lineout and rumble the ball forward and to the right for Elder to score. Walwyn converts. Rams are aggressive, especially at the breakdown and win possession running the ball into our half. We hand them a couple of penalties, the second being mid-field where they successfully shoot for goal. 7-3 Another dangerous Rams raid is halted by some great defense from which we regain possession and advance the ball effectively, assisted by a couple of penalties. We win a lineout around the 22 on left wing and move the ball quickly to an unmarked Nolan on the right wing. He trots in for a try and Walwyn again converts bringing the score to 14-3.The ball is moved back and forth for some time until the Rams break out, are awarded a penalty and a few phases later score. McLeay charges down the conversion attempt from in-front. From a left-field lineout win, the ball is moved quickly to the right and finds Stewie and Nolan with an overlap.

Stewie probably could have scored, but to make sure he passed off to Dave for his second. A scuffle breaks out following the lineout as a Rams back rower delivers a Liverpool kiss and a couple of punches to Booboo. He is shown a yellow card and half-time is blown with the score at 19-8.

The Rams start the second half with renewed vigor and look very dangerous. We are scrambling in defense trying to contain them and concede several penalties moving them into our red zone where they take a shot but miss. We are struggling to contain another another attack when the Rams take a penalty kick for touch which should have seen them with the lineout well inside our 22. Instead they relieve the pressure on us by kicking it dead. The ball is being moved up and down the field, mostly between the 22s, neither team being able to finish due largely to the disruption caused by a flood of penalties. We concede a penalty whilst defending close to our line which provides the platform for the Rams to score their second try. 19-15. We work the ball through ferocious defense into the Rams 22 and look like scoring, before knocking on and allowing the Rams to relieve. A serious break-out on the Rams right wing is arrested as the speedy carrier falls victim to a copy-book Chester tackle which also puts him into touch and saves an almost certain try. Rams regain possession and are hammering at our defense inside 10. We concede several penalties which sees Will binned and soon after the Rams scoring again bringing the score to 19-18. In the final gripping minutes we have a call of 'not straight' on a penalty lineout. The pressure is telling on both sides as, for the first time in the match, the resultant scrum has to be reset several times. The ref has had enough and Rams are awarded a scrum penalty. They then hand us a penalty. The lineout is the last play, we win it and kick the ball into touch to win a nail-biter 19-18 against the undefeated Rams. To beat them again we need to smarten up our work at the breakdown - Rams were exceptional. We also need to get clean ball wide where we outflank them.

U18s

Old Collegians 15 v Burnside 36

After a week of not many on the training track it seemed numbers this week were going to be depleted. Our team showed a lot of character and started the game with 12. We didn't have a front row and as a result it was decided that there would be uncontested scrums. We held Burnside at bay for the first 10 minutes. They then managed to find a hole in our defence. From the restart our quality backline managed to get clean ball and moved it wide with Kaleb crossing the try line after a great run.

A couple of missed tackles saw Burnside run the ball through the middle and out wide to score twice. We had a couple of players join us for the game, which seemed to slow our effort at first, but good play saw us rumble the ball up and one of the new players forced his way through their defence to score. We were still in the game. At half time there was a lot of positive energy within our team, we were up for the contest. After the restart a couple of errors cost us to see them score another 2 tries. Next the try of the day was scored...a clean ball from the base of the scrum and quick hands got the ball to Max Douglass who ran from the 22 through Burnside's defence. It was a team lifting moment; we had a real go on Saturday and showed some passion but run out of gas and missed out on the majority of the points being scored. We need consistent stronger numbers at training; this will help us with our fitness and team structure. Let's give it our best and finish the season off strong. We've got a bye this weekend followed by Burnside at home. We'll have everybody in red and blue behind us.

U16s

Old Collegians 40 v Barossa/NEDS 12

Try Scorers: Magnus Illman (3), Rory Illman, Alfie Malcom, Brad Killick

Conversions: Ben Viljoen (5)

With sickness and injury rife in the team (including perhaps at least 6 boys that ordinarily would not have played), along with absenteeism through being the final weekend of school holidays, a squad of only 14 took on a strong NEDS/Rams contingent.

We were fortunate to receive 3 very competent and able volunteers from the U14s to back up our meagre squad of players. Thanks to James Du Preez, George Hewitt and Seaton Siegfried for benching up this week. We hope to see more of these players in the future.

The first half saw our boys dominating the forward play and moving the ball swiftly to the backs. By half time through great team play we had achieved bonus points, going into half time 26-5 up.

As we moved into the second half on this fresh Barossa day, the colds took their toll on the team and NEDS/Rams team stated to come back strongly. Although never under any true threat our boys completed the second half by scoring a further 2 tries and conceding 1.

Well done to the team on Saturday being Brad, Tom, Ben H, James R, Josh, Alfie, Doug, Patrick, Ben V, Rory, Magnus, Jasper, Adam and Michael who gallantly made it up to Lyndoch. Again thanks to James DP, George and Seaton who played out of their skins to support the U16s in their hour of need.

Best players: Everyone.

U14s

Old Collegians 69 v Vikings 5

(Wednesday night game 15th July at Gleneagles Reserve)

What a week in rugby for the U14s. The U14s boys were faced with two games close together, their first was played under lights at Gleneagles against Vikings on Wednesday night (15/7) and the second at Lyndoch Oval against the Barossa Rams on the Saturday. The U14s round prior to the school holidays was deferred to avoid any possible injury to those representing the state in a competition on the Gold Coast.

The evening game at Gleneagles against the Vikings and in the freezing cold, started with the Vikings scoring the first try and while the conversion was being attempted the lights went out!! While the lighting system was being reset there was an opportunity for the Old Collegians' boys to absorb the early coaching inspiration and to refocus themselves on the game at hand. This produced a whole different approach from the team who managed to hold the Vikings out from scoring any more tries.

There were tries scored by James Du Preez, Seaton Siegfried, Elijah Moaga, Jacob Osborne, Tane Pardoe and Lefatu Egglestone. Conversions by George Hewitt. It was a great team effort by all our team members, who fully supported those that got over the line.

Old Collegians 104 v Barossa Rams 10

After the unusual training session/game on the Wednesday evening at Gleneagles the team was off to Lyndoch Oval to play the second game of the season against the Barossa Rams. This game was almost a continuation of the game against the Vikings. The Barossa Rams were able to put on a try in the first half and were able to bring it up to the Old Collegians' players, however after the mid game break it was a different story. Where after the Barossa Rams struggled to make an impression on a focussed Old Colls team. In the dying moments of the game the Barossa Rams scored their second try.

The Old Collegians' tries were scored by Oscar Wynne-Jones, Andrew Macfadyen, James Du Preez, Lochie Edwards, George Hewitt, Jacob Osborne, Seaton Siegfried, Max Monfries, Elijah Moaga, Lefatu Egglestone and Jack Richards. Conversions were performed by George Hewitt, Max Monfries and Elijah Moaga. Once again this try scoring achievement would not have been made possible without the contribution by the other team members. Well done everyone.

U12s

Old Collegians 47 v Barossa/NEDS 5

The winter sun shone brightly as Old Cols began scoring soon after the opening whistle.

The first try to Old Collegians was set up by Veaco with a characteristic kick and run. Followed up by Alecia run and pass to Katie who scored. Ethan scored next from a rucked possession within the 20 metre mark. The third try was scored by Bertie, after the ball had travelled down the back line to Xanib. Some rucking ensued and Bertie snatched a high tap and put it down over the line. The forth try was by Jayden after some excellent team work of rucking and passing out to the backs, and the last try During the first half was scored by Veaco with a great run from midfield. I should mention that Noah nearly scored, putting the ball down inches from the try line. Katie was outstanding as hooker, winning many scrums. Towards the end of the first half a kick by Morris and a 5 meter scrum also nearly resulted in try.

The second half was a more closely contested competition. In this half Old Collegians scored two tries and NEDS one. During this half NEDS put up a concerted effort, helped by some of the Old Collegians players, playing for them as their numbers were low. These players included Dakota, Willem, Callum and Tom Mocatta. Well done to them and any others who played for the opposition. Half way through the second half, there was some terrific defence work on the NEDS try line, where Old Collegians forced a turnover. Having possession, Veaco dribbled the ball (Soccer style) 60 metres with five NEDs players on his heels, and then handled the ball to score once safely over the Old Colls try line.

The final Old Collegians try was scored by Alecia, who had played well all day, illustrating committed tackling on more than one occasion. Kade and Morris also deserves a mention for their tackling.

The variety of Old Collegians players who scored illustrates what a great team effort was on display for this game. Well done.

U10s

Old Collegians v Barossa/NEDS

After a very early and very cold start the u10's kicked off at the Lyndoch Oval. Fielding a strong and eager team, playing on a full pitch, it wasn't long before the players started running the ball and putting points on the board.

Some good strong running saw Max Gordon score two tries and set up some good play earned him player of the match and some committed tackles and clever rugby saw Sam Lindow awarded best tackler for the day.

A really great team effort and the coaching staff pleased to see all the work in practice being implemented into match play. Final score, eleven tries to two. Great work and see everyone on Saturday.

U8s

Old Collegians v Barossa/NEDS

The U8s turned up bright and early at a thankfully mud-free Lyndoch Oval on Saturday morning. The Barossa/ NEDs team could only field 3 players, so 6 of the Old Colls players volunteered each half to play for the opposition which meant we could play 9 a side with no-one having to spend time on the bench. This lead to a very even match, with some great rugby played as we love to tackle each other! It was great to see Salvi and Eddie running straight and being taken down by 3 or 4 tacklers, to see Tyson and Ivan using their good passes to find space for their team mates, whilst Mawson carried on tackling anything that moved, and Jackson Denley found space and ran the tries in- whoever he was playing for!

Special mentions to Jackson B and Louis for their commitment in the tackle, to Joseph, Noah, Sasha, Marcus and Olly who remembered their coach's words and kept making a line in defence next to the ruck, and to Dyfrig new to the club and in his first game of tackle rugby ever, who ran in a brace of tries and made some good tackles. Player of the day was Finlay, who must have had several bowls full of porridge that morning, as he tackled the big runners with great technique! The team was well led by Tyson who was the captain for the day.

U7s

Old Collegians v Barossa/NEDS

Strong turnout but less than most weeks, with 18 which gave both OC Red and OC Blue U7 players more pitch time than usual. We are starting to see some of the younger players really develop and it was great to see a lot more structure in the play, though getting back on side still continues to be something to work on.

Good spread of offensive play with Quillien, Daniel, Hudson, Alex, Anika and Joe Lohse all scoring tries for Old Collegians or for NEDS, for those who filled in to make up a NEDS side; one of the good results from the kids being required to pass a few times before taking a run for the try line. Player of the match went to Hamish for his strong running and aggressive touch/tagging chasing down the NEDS players more than a few times.

Encouragement award to James Hicks for getting some good runs in and Alex Smitham who played his first match for Old Collegians. Final result 7 - 7.

1st Grade

Old Colls 37 v Brighton 15

Tries: Henry Nutt (3), Gary Mann, George Eddell, Tim Pickerill

Conversions: Stuart Robertson (2)

Penalties: Stuart Robertson

Best Players: Henry Nutt, Peter Cross, Tim Pickerill

The first grade started with purpose, running with the wind and looking to put early points on the board in conditions that would clearly become much more difficult to run against in the second half. Early pressure was applied to Brighton with a long, well-chased kick-off into their 22 that forced a short clearance kick. Old Colls won the line out and a subsequent scrum, keeping the ball in hand for the forwards to drive in close and Nutt was quickly over to score.

We held the majority of possession in the first half and had several chances and line breaks, but struggled to convert these into points, often paying the price for trying to do too much in each phase and some rushed last passes and offloads not going to hand. Old Colls continually probed the Brighton line from side to side and eventually broke through from half way as Nutt, Mann and Eddell found space to combine down the left wing and Eddell scored. Regrettably, Brighton forced a turnover shortly after the restart, testing Old Colls' defence and too easily finding a gap from 40m out to grab a try to make the half time score 10 to 7.

The second half mirrored the first as Brighton went long of the kick-off to pin Old Colls down in our 22 for the first 20 minutes. Brighton scored again to take the lead, with only some desperate defence led by Dawes limiting further damage as the headwind picked up and we found it difficult to gain a respite or any distance from kicks in our territory. After the try, a long restart allowed Old Colls to get back on track, forcing a Brighton knock on their 22. Van Altena went off the back of the scrum and was stopped just short of the line, but a quick recycle and pass to Nutt enabled him to drive over and regain the lead. The Brighton restart went out on the full and from the resulting scrum Smedley broke the line, passing to Cross who took play into the 22 before in turn finding Nutt who was over for his third try.

Brighton were the next to score with a penalty and soon made their way back into our 22 after the kickoff, where it was apparent that any progress we were to make would have to been on foot rather than off the boot. Macklin was able to break out and ran it back to Brighton territory to relieve the attack, only for Brighton to once more find easy metres with a kick. Smedley then ran from within our 22 and occupied the last defenders until he could find Mann in support, who completed the attack with a try. The team played some of its best rugby in the last 15 minutes, with the forwards unrelenting in attack and defence and Robertson, McDonough, Macklin, Smedley and Pickerill rotating as the back 3 deep in our half to defuse Brighton's the long clearance bombs. On one such return Smedley linked up with Pickerill to put him through a hole and score, before Old Colls had the final score with a penalty on full time.

2nd Grade

Old Colls 22 v Brighton 7

Arctic conditions and a howling sea gale greeted the 2nd grade upon arrival at Brighton Oval. Despite this the ground was firm and reasonably dry. OC were confident of producing some good football despite the wind and cold.

On paper the team was strong, although some poor turnouts at training had been hampering progression of the game-plan and cohesion.

OC began strongly, surging forward deep into Brighton territory with some heavy ball carrying and excellent ball retention. The 2nds camped in the opposition half for a prolonged period but excellent defence from Brighton kept them at bay.

After the impressive initial surge the intensity of attack dropped slightly and the game moved from end to end, with Brighton growing in confidence. OC clearly were not at full throttle and appeared to have Brighton's measure but were not scoring many points to prove the upper hand was theirs.

A narrow lead at half time was not quite the position the team had hoped for but there was relative calm in the halftime huddle.

In the second half with the wind behind them the 2nds needed to play a bit of territory rugby and put some more pressure on the enemy. However throughout the half we repeatedly turned down kicking options in favour of running rugby. An admirable choice but maybe not the most tactically advantageous. Eventually an outstanding kick from Mark Darby, an openside flanker, put us in a strong attacking position and Brighton struggled to get out of their half and the toll of continual defence grew. The players seemed to slowly but continually improve their teamwork and understanding of the team targets.

Eventually the final whistle arrived but the game was beyond doubt well before that.

22-7 means another bonus point win for the 2nds but the team's development is being greatly hampered by poor training attendances. A quick briefing before the game plus natural talent will NOT get us through a finals campaign.

Massive thanks to Chester Armstrong and Dave Nolan for playing for so long despite already playing a full game of 3rds.

Finally, welcome to Lee Verrell! His first game for OC was a strong performance, including a (possibly harsh) yellow card and a shattering dousing of cold water from a load of bastard team mates.

Best: J. Graham, A. Burgess, M. Otty.

Well done to all players! Big thanks to all the reserves that sat in the blistering cold to support their team mates.

3rd Grade

Old Colls 33 v Brighton 14

Tries: Ryan Nielsen; Dave Nolan(2); Derek Lewis; Stewie Douglas

Convs: Dave Nolan; Stewie Douglas (2); Paull Francis

Best on Ground: Derek Lewis; Dave Nolan; Rob Porteous

We were seriously short of players this week with only 31 players training on Thursday from which to make three teams. We ended up with three backs short between Div2 and Div3 and only one recognized prop available for Div3. However, sharing backs between teams and a hooker moving to prop allowed the 3s to start with a reasonable team.

The game started with us knocking on from the kick-off, providing an early test for our cobbled up front row against a noticeably larger Brighton pack. The first of several tighthead wins allayed management's fears. We advanced the ball effectively into range where we rumbled the ball over the line for what was ruled 'held-up'. Dissenting voices converted a five metre scrum to a Brighton penalty. Not happy! Fortunately we are superior in the set play and this provides us possession where otherwise we should not expect it. It's not long before Chester is carrying down the right wing, deep into Brighton territory. He keeps it alive for Booboo to find it in his hands and places it between the posts. Nolan converts. A superb demolition of Brighton's scrum around mid-field allows McLeay to clean up and get the ball to Nolan for an easy run to the goal line. Stewie converts. Brighton adjusts their front row which improves their scrum but still they cannot achieve parity. They turn over our ball and run it through the hands (and a dropped ball) to score out wide. Fidock converts with a masterful kick in the strong swirling wind. Brighton are again attacking our line and take some cheap shots creating a fracas. The ref blows half time a few minutes early to defuse the nonsense. 14-7 to OC.

As the packs assemble to right field for the second half kick off, Stewie surprises everyone when he pivots and boots the ball to a fast running Nolan on the left wing. He gets within a few metres of the line before the defense arrives. We are applying pressure close to the Brighton goal when one of their props becomes unlawfully enthusiastic and is shown a yellow card. We elect to scrum the penalty and march it over the line for Derek to score. Stewie converts. We are combining well and Brighton's game is falling away. It's not long until Stewie scores our bonus point try. Soon Nolan finds a clear run to the line and scores under the posts. Francis scores his first points off the boot in years with the conversion. We have a bench of forwards and change the second row as Brighton regains their 15th man. They attack with renewed vigor and using their big men, grind the ball through many phases into our red zone and eventually a score. The guys are unhappy at giving Brighton a sniff and recover to apply lots of pressure close to Brighton's line. The good work is spoiled by conceding consecutive penalties allowing Brighton to be in possession dangerously close to our line. Stern defense repels Brighton's repeated drives to our line until they move it wide to their backs who now have a two man overlap and look like scoring. Fortunately the ball is dropped and Nolan swooped. He collected the ball and looked like breaking out before a desperate Brighton lunge tapped his ankles only just sufficiently to upset his balance. The game ended a few minutes early with a score line of 33-14 to us.

I wish to thank those players who played both Div3 and Div2 in the most excruciating conditions. Of particular note is Chester who played a full game for 3s, refereed the U18 match and ran on to play the full Div2 game - a heroic effort. Also 'old man' Dave Nolan who played all of the div3 and div2 matches and was still standing up defenders late in the div2 match. It was a fine performance extracting bonus point wins in all three divisions when we started the day with what, on paper, were compromised teams.

1st Grade

Old Colls 66 v Port Adelaide 21

Tries: Tim Dawes, Henry Nutt, Sandy Taylor, Gary Mann, Bernie Van Altena (2), Tim Pickerill, Will Sadler (3)

Conversions: Will Sadler (8)

Best Players: Will Sadler, Paul Cleary, Bernie Van Altena

Old Colls came away with a solid 10 try to 3 win against a Port side that competed well in close, but struggled to contain the Old Colls' set piece on both our feed and theirs. In open field play, the work by our forwards during the initial pod phases of attack was effective at absorbing the defence and after several phases creating space for our running game to prosper in the centres and out wide.

The points came quickly early on, as Old Colls started confidently and regained the ball from the kick-off to push downfield, capitalising on the early attack with a try to Sadler in the first minutes. Port hit back straight away, taking possession into our 22 for several phases before ultimately crossing under the posts and taking the lead with the conversion. Not to be rattled, Old Colls settled down and kept possession, retaking the lead when Pickerill broke through down his wing from 70m out and reached the fullback before popping to Mann who finished with a try. Leen got hold of the ball from the kick-off and again broke the defensive line, offloading to Hyam in support, who in turn found Sadler for his second try. Not long afterwards, Old Colls kicked a penalty to the Port 22 and a strong lineout take and drive enabled Nutt to score from the back of the maul.

Port were still in the game and went on the offensive, pegging the game in our 22 for a sustained period where they were awarded several penalties in kickable positions, but held on for their second try which they eventually scored to take the score to 26 to 14. The restart went awry and was out on the full, but our scrum pinched the ball and Macklin broke through midfield on an inside line from the centres, with Van Altena following to pick up the offload and beat the last defender. At the end of the half Pickerill again managed to find a gap up his wing from long range, this time scoring himself.

Port came out with intensity for the second half and, for the second week in a row, Old Colls allowed the opposition to score the first try after the break. This time, however, Old Colls responded promptly and shut Port out from scoring again with some well marshalled defence and by limiting their time with the ball. After some back and forth play in which both teams had chances, Old Colls made it to the Port 22 and were awarded a penalty that Van Altena tapped quickly, driving hard and low from close range for his second try.

Further exchanges of possession followed until, with 15 minutes to go, Old Colls worked back into the Port red zone with the forwards pushing hard and Dawes went over to score. Karl Edgar made a good run from the restart and was well supported as the ball went through the hands of Eddell, Sadler and Mann before Sadler looped back in to score. In the final moments of the game Old Colls drove up to be 10m from the Port line, where no one was more surprised than Taylor himself as he spun into the defence looking for support and instead found a gap to be through to score under the sticks.

3rd Grade

Old Colls 39 v Port Adelaide 19

Tries: Justin Elder; Tom Armstrong; Karl Edgar; Derek Lewis (2); Paul McFadden (2)

Conversions: Stew Douglas (2)

Best Players: Derek Lewis; Paul McFadden; Chester Armstrong

Little more can be said about our first 25 minutes, than it was dreadful. We made error upon error and drew countless penalties from an increasingly frustrated referee. We eventually stretched the ref's patience too far and a player was sent to the bin. Our scrambling defence managed to hold Port to just one converted try around the 18th minute. Our dominant scrum was the one redeeming feature of the first quarter. The team now started to come together and play in a style recognizable as Rugby. It proved fruitful, the team working the ball into Port's 22 where a solid scrum win set the platform for Justin's try. We are soon back in Port's 22 where we win a tighthead in convincing fashion only to draw a penalty allowing Port to relieve. We are starting to win some turnover ball and are finding holes in the defence. A lineout win around 15 out sees Booboo over for a try - bewilderingly disallowed. We win the ball around mid-field and pass it at pace to Tom on left wing. He scores after a strong 30 metre run through several Port defenders. For the first time we are ahead at 10-7. Close to half time we see the pack hunting well and offering clean possession to the backs. Kaboom breaks the line and offloads to Karl who scores under the posts. Stew converts and half time is whistled. Score is 17-7 and the management has ceased tearing hair from head.

The second half starts very differently to the first, with us looking dominant in most phases of the game. Soon we see Kaboom again break out, offload to Booboo who hands the ball to Derek to score 3 minutes into second half. Again we work the ball into Port's 22 and Port scramble the ball from us only to fumble it. Derek pounced on the loose ball and carried it over for his second try in 5 minutes. Derek's hat-trick looks to be on as he finds himself in possession 40 out on the right wing. A desperate Port tackle forces a knock-on, saving the try and Old Colls from an afternoon of gloat. Soon after the resulting scrum we are attacking when Kaboom pops a cracker to Chester at pace. He clears the line to feed it back to Kaboom to score the try. Stew converts. We are now playing with confidence and to our potential and magically the rain of penalties has ceased - there's a lesson here. Port recovers with some strong attacks, one of which catches us out and they get to the line. The conversion brings the score to 34-14. We win a scrum 35 out feeding clean ball to Kaboom who runs at the defence, which melts with his approach to show him a clear path to the goal line. The pack is serving large doses of clean ball to the backs who are attacking through many hands.

Port's resilience pays off as they secure possession and score right on full time for a final score of 39-19. Stew demonstrated that place kicking is unlike bike riding - you do forget how to do it (unless it's directly in front). If only we could play to our capability for 70 min.

Women's

Old Colls 10 v Southern Suburbs 15

Tries: Mackenzie Sadler (1)

Conversions: Siân Beavers 1 conversion and 1 penalty

Best Players: Belinda Wade, Mackenzie Sadler and Katie Reynolds

In a grim contest against traditional rivals Southern Suburbs, the team went down in the dying moments of the game after a late try scored by Souths. This was after a game in which our forwards dominated for 90% of the game. The big Souths forwards and the team exercised great discipline in which the penalty count was decisively in favour of Old Collegians. The game in the first half went in two phases, one in which Old Collegians dominated and had most of the territory but were frustrated in getting clean ball to the backs and another phase where we spent most of our time in our own half and were under a lot of pressure. The first try scored by Souths was almost as a result of an oversight in our defence - a strange lapse.

The half time score was 10-7 in favour of Souths but was quickly evened up in the second half with a rare penalty scored by Siân Beavers. After that the game see-sawed between us and Souths with neither side getting a definite advantage. The big Souths forwards who had caused the team so much trouble a month ago, were largely neutralised although some unfortunate in-field kicking let their big loose head, back in with a couple of crunching runs. Our scrum half Bel Wade played a terrific game directing our backs to both sides of the ground. She was matched with a lot of hard work by Katie Reynolds and in the backs big runs and tackles by Mackenzie Sadler. Our team played their hearts out but what was looking ominously like a draw, faded to a win when Souths scored a try in the dying moments of the game.

U10s

Old Collegians v Woodville

Another full pitch home game for the U10s with plenty of action! Our tenacious U10s held out and played some great team rugby. Coach Craig Barlow was unavailable this week, so special thanks goes to Pablo (Juan Aguiar) who stepped up to be our on field coach.

The game was strongly contested from start to finish, all players gave it their best. Several minor injuries on the day couldn't hold the team spirit back, with Piper taking a knock to the head, Lucas straining a wrist, Olin a thigh scrape and Sam getting winded. James also had a good game, whilst feeling unwell.

I believe the three U8s that debuted on the day performed admirably and would like to thank the U10s for welcoming them to the side. Congratulations to Salvy, Tyson and Ivan. Great tackles from Ivan that always brought down the opposition were fantastic to watch and earned him the Best Tackler Trophy.

Player of the Match went to Noah for some outstanding field work, always amazing given his size compared to others. The final score was 20 points to 17 our way.

The improvements in on field positions of forwards and backs and maintaining ball possession appear to be taking hold for the U10s. We will continue to further develop their game knowledge, which will also lead to increased confidence. We look forward to the next game at Lyndoch and hope all can attend.

U8s

Old Collegians v Woodville and Port Adelaide

The OC U8s played plenty of rugby on the weekend when Port Adelaide turned up to join Woodville at Tregenza. The first game saw OC's strength and discipline overwhelm Port who, despite their gallant efforts, ran in only one try versus our 6. Overall a solid team performance best summarised game one.

Game two against Woodville however, was a different story. Woodville U8s take their rugby seriously and always turn up to play their best. Game one perhaps lulled our team into a sense "extended" self-belief because at times we reverted back to playing without structure. The team missed the bullocking runs of Eddie who was sidelined with sickness on the day and with Salvatore having a sleep-over at Ivan's place, his energy levels were depleted a little after game one. Not having our tackling menace Mawson, left a big hole in our defence. All this being the case, there was plenty of spirit in the team and everyone fought their hardest to the end - a fitting draw the result.

Game three had the U8s back pitted against Port who had, by this time, found their groove. A much improved performance by Port delivered a test for OC, ultimately one they passed.

At various times on the day each and every player stepped up - hence no individual trophy was awarded. Mentions must go to Jackson Denley for his usual runs and improving defence, Jack, Tyson and Ivan for their leadership as well as Marcus and Oliver who now realise that the small kids can tackle the big kids. Joseph, Sasha and Jackson Brady are improving every week and making increasing contributions.

U7s

Old Collegians versus Woodville

We had only 19 U7s players this week due to illness and school holiday travel, yet we were able to run two teams against Woodville.

Both OC sides played a great team game, with many more of our younger players getting involved in both attack and defense.

Some fantastic covering defense from the usual suspects of Alex, Daniel, Jack G, Jack T and Toby, who were joined by hard running team mates Campbell, PJ, Callum, Anika, Azalie and Sam, who all covered in defense and made metres hitting up the ball in attack.

Outstanding work rate from all players this week, with Encouragement Awards for Anika, Callum, PJ and Azalie.

Player of the Match this week, with a try right on the final bu

er, is Jemima Collins.

Old Collegians 38 v Burnside 17

Tries: Henry Nutt, Rob Smedley, George Eddell, Paddy Macklin, Tim Pickerill (2)

Conversions: Will Sadler (4)

Best Players: Will Sadler, Gary Mann, James Bradley

A solid but by no means easy win by the first grade, who set a good platform in the first half but lost focus in the second and had to work hard to salvage the result. Burnside held the majority of possession early in the proceedings and were aggressive at the contact from the get-go, in the process incurring a red card for a tip tackle. Old Collegians weathered constant pressure in our half for the first 10 minutes until we forced a turnover in our 22 and Pickerill broke out to make it past the halfway where he was caught, but managed to find Macklin in support and he ran the last 40m to score. Old Collegians took the restart cleanly and mounted its own push, keeping ball in hand until we were in the Burnside 22. The attack probed from side to side and eventually Nutt found a gap and drove over.

The Old Collegians set piece performed well all day and Nutt, Campion and Power were combining smoothly in the lineouts to set the platform for Smedley to direct the attack. Sadler consistently made good distance on clearance and penalty kicks and Old Collegians soon had another attacking opportunity from a lineout 10m out. The pack took it down and rumbled close to the Burnside try-line, allowing Denly to distribute wide for Smedley who hit a hole in centre-field straight on and went through to score under the posts. Old Collegians then managed one more try and grabbed a bonus point before half time, with another lineout win being pushed quickly through the backs to the other side of the field where Sadler came into the line to link up with Pickerill who ran the last 30m down the wing to score.

At 24 to nil up starting the second half Old Collegians were in a good position to be able to post a dominant score, but for the next 30 minutes we lost the crispness that had been shown in the first half and paid the price. Burnside hit hard from the kick-off and kept up an aggressive momentum that gave Old Collegians plenty of time in defence but few opportunities to build effective phases in attack, with Burnside scoring 3 tries.

The tide turned with 10 minutes to go as Old Collegians pulled together and were awarded a penalty at halfway. From the ensuing lineout the backs went wide to the far side where Eddell found some space and scored on the far side. Campion took the restart confidently and Leen and Mann combined to run play back to the Burnside 22. The rest of the team was not far in support and in several phases drove Burnside back to be on their line, where Pickerill nipped off the back of a ruck to score the final try.

Old Collegians 14 v Burnside 16 - need to edit

Tries: Derek Lewis; Paddy Walsh

Conversions: Harley Simmonds (2)

Best On Ground: Rob Porteous; Will McLeay; Jarrod Cole

Burnside had a large forward pack and they attacked with spirit from the outset and pressed us deep into our 22. We transgressed the laws and Burnside converted the penalty attempt. This seemed like a wake-up call and for the next five minutes we played in Burnsides half. Burnside looked dangerous in possession their but poor handling and some lack of discipline let us off the hook several times. After some 15 mins and several pressing attacks by us, Burnside turned it over and ran it down the right wing chased and tackled by Stewie several metres out. The tackled player played the ball off his feet (unseen by the ref) and poped it to support to score. Both teams are warned against chatter, but Burnside persists and were awarded a yellow. Despite being a man down, they worked it into range for a shot after a defensive penalty. Its wasn't going our way at all. Now 11-0 down where the score stayed 'til half time.

We had a large bench and made four changes at the break. Half time talk acknowledged that we were playing well but rushing things, which had aborted a few opportunities. 'Play our game and it will come to us.'

Several minutes into the second half and we saw Derek emerge from the line at pace with 3 defensive backs in the 35 metres he had to the goal line. He stepped the first then second defender only to be confronted by a serious looking fullback. To everyones surprise, not the least Dereks, Burnsides last defender was left looking foolish as Derek shimmies past and places the ball over the line. Harley, back from injury, converted. Burnside pressured us in our 22 and handed us a penalty, the kick finding touch around halfway. Uncharacteristically we lost the lineout only for Burnside to drop the ball. Paddy pounced and found himself with a clear 50 metre run to the line, outrunning the Burnside defenders on the way. Paddy put it between the posts making an easy conversion for Harley. Its now 14-11 to the good guys. The next ten minutes were indecisive for both teams. Burnside lifted when close to our 22 and pressed us hard enough to extract several penalties. Enough to make Burnsides try possible. It was not converted.

Burnside now turned up the wick and we are under pressure. We saved one potential try with a great scrum win on Burnside feed. Another with a determined cover tackle. We were scrambling now and saved yet another serious Burnside attack. The game ended, 14-16 loss.

Burnside is a serious contender and we held them to a narrow win, so there is no disgrace in this defeat. Both teams were let down by some basic handling mistakes. Its our job to eliminate them.

Old Collegians 33 v Burnside 26

Tries: Rory Illman (3), Austin Teague (1), Olli Horne (1)

Conversions: Ben Viljoen (4)

Old Collegians started well with vigour and enthusiasm despite a much larger opposition. This was clearly going to be a spirited game between two talented sides. However, despite making good ground and getting close to the line Burnside tackled fiercely and dominated in the scrums. A turned ball led to a breakaway from Burnside to power to the line leaving tacklers in his wake. Old Collegians hit back with some great jumping by Harrison Cole and superb ball retention despite a well drilled Burnside forward 8 and their import from Queensland. The forwards continue to improve and it was good to see James Rees back especially at front row to shore up the usual stalwarts. Alfie, Doug and Austin (all picked for being the same height) fought for the loose ball, keeping us in the game so the backs could dance their magic. With a superb rescue ball from Nick, Cliffo charged up the middle and spread wide through the safe hands of the Illman brothers to allow Rory to power over as winger. Another try was soon added but then Burnside hit back with a well worked move near the try line and we had no answer to the drilled maul (needs work).

Fast forward to the second half and a great try to Austin from half way and Ollie put us into contention despite a couple of unlucky soft tries given away. The crowd bit their nails, fingers and the nails of whoever was standing next to them as players tackled, fought, locked horns and clashed like upset rhinos. Which way would it go? Burnside now had lots of possession but could not break the valiant tackling and suddenly the ball was moved and through small gaps Rory scored the winner. Well done for a great spectacle boys and we continue to learn and understand the benefits of hard work on and off the match pitch. A break and back on again in 2 weeks.

Old Collegians 25 v Burnside 41

It was a beautiful day for rugby, the sun was shining and air was cool and I had unfortunately missed the first half of the game, arriving during the half time break. The score at that stage was Old Collegians 15 to Burnside 19 - three tries each. The first half was described as a nail biter with each of the Old Collegians' tries being made through hard toil.

The second half opened in a manner that must have been similar to that of the first half with the Old Collegians taking it to Burnside. They seemed to keep the ball in their own 22 zone for most of the term. This paid benefit with an additional two tries. Neither of the tries were converted. Burnside was very strong in defence being able to steal possession on several occasions and make use of their quick backs sprinting to the try line on a further 4 occasions albeit of the dedicated efforts of the Old Collegians' backs who were as passionate as in the previous games. The final score did not represent how close the game really was as the boys were attack for a majority of the time.

Old Collegians v Burnside

It is always a tough game against Burnside and this week did not disappoint. I am glad to say after last weeks effort, the team stood up to the challenge. The team started on 'fire' applying some structure to their attack and scoring the first try. It proved a reasonably even contest for the balance of the first half. Fatigue started to set in during the second half and as a result of the team only having two substitutes for the game (not something they are use to), but when challenged responded positively with some fierce tackling and strong running. Award winners this week were Noah, for his strong defence on the edges and to James for taking it straight to the Burnside team with some damaging runs through the middle. It is great to see the team play with some structure that will only improve for the balance of the season.

U8s

Old Collegians v Burnside

You know you have had a reasonable day out when the team scores 10 tries with eight different scorers... That was the case for the Old Collegians' U8s on Saturday versing our old rivals, Burnside. The score line at half time (3 tries to 1) didn't reflect the state of the game. Old Collegians dominated throughout, though the lack of structure in our line was a source of frustration in the first half. Some stern half-time reminders as to what was discussed pre-game seemed to get things rolling and for the remainder of the game we managed to frustrate the opposition with our effective line structure. The flood gates opened and we scored 7 tries to none in the second half in what was, at the end of the day, a satisfying overall team performance. When we stayed in a line in defence, the runners from the opposition (who are used to running back and round the rucks) were met by a red and blue wall, and couldn't find a way through. Jackson Denley and Salvi did a particularly good job of staying in a defensive line on Saturday.

Mentions to William whose strong running gained valuable ground for Old Collegians in the first half. He was well supported with big efforts from Salvi and Eddie throughout the game. Jack Bell was captain on the day and made every effort to lead from the front by playing a team game, which at times, meant protecting the ball for a teammate to take possession. Tyson and Ivan also showed great team awareness by looking to pass to teammates in better positions. Oliver noticeably stepped up his tackling pressure, impeding Burnsides progress whilst Noah, Sasha, Joseph and Jackson Brady were always close by to lend support. Louis continued his recent form by working hard at the breakdown. Another week can't pass without acknowledging Mawson, who (I think) dreams about tackling.

Best player on the day was without doubt Jackson Denley who not only blinded us with some try scoring dashes starting from deep in enemy territory but also showed us that he can mix it up in the forwards!

U7s

Old Collegians v Burnside

The smallest week yet with 18 U7s for the game at Burnside. However, still enough for two teams vs Burnside. This was a strong game from both sides and there were some fast moves from both sides. A smaller pitch increased the competitiveness of the game with good coverage from both sides.

The first consistent week with the 2 pass rule has seen great awareness from the kids about their team mates and greater alertness in the remainder of the team as they vie to get a pass. Usual players dominated tries but passing has meant greater contribution from other players.

Encouragement awards to Caleb, Ben and Hamish Kerr Grant.

Player of the match to Azalie Czeglik

Old Collegians 76 v Woodville 12

Tries: Henry Nutt (2), Gary Mann (2), Andrew Kennett (2), Delano Leen (4), Tim Pickerill, Will Sadler

Conversions: Will Sadler (7), Rob Smedley

Best Players: Tim Wonders, Delano Leen, Wayne Power, Will Sadler

First Grade Debut: Paul Cleary

After 2 weeks off and despite various positional and personnel changes the first grade delivered a healthy win against Woodville, running in 12 tries to 2. The early exchanges were scrappy for both teams but Old Collegians settled first through several forward hit-ups that saw Powers and Wonders making ground before going wide to Sadler who finished up down the wing. Old Collegians kept the pressure on to work into Woodvilles territory twice more in quick succession, as Smedley went up the short-side from a scrum on the opposition 22, engaging the defending winger and freeing up space for Pickerill to score further out. From the restart solid drives from the forward pods took us back into the red-zone and Mann slipped through the defensive line to score under the posts.

The first half settled down with Old Collegians having the majority of possession but not converting it into points at quite the same pace. A 60m second try to Pickerill from a turnover forced by Smedley was disallowed due to an earlier offside infringement and Woodville was awarded a penalty in our half. They kept ball in hand and their bigger pack made ground off the rucks, eventually barging to and over our line to score. . Old Collegians restarted long and regained possession in a good attacking position, from which our forwards mauled up the field until the ball was cut wide for Leen who scored. Woodville went back on the attack for the last 10 minutes but Old Collegians were disciplined in defence and held out until a turnover gave Mann the chance to break out. Woodville scrambled in defence but after a handful of quick phases the play was back in their 22 and Kennett sniped off the back of a ruck to score.

Woodville attacked early in the second half but were repelled by a well organised defence, the pressure of which forced a turnover that was pounced on by Leen who stole down the wing for another try. Woodville conceded a penalty shortly thereafter and Old Collegians made useful distance with a kick to a lineout in Woodville territory. The ball was kept in hand for several phases that moved the attack all the way right across field, before coming back left where Riady was brought down by 3 defenders just short, as Nutt scooped up the ball to finish the play.

Woodville had multiple chances but were becoming frustrated as their defence got looser and, whilst not reducing their aggression in close, it did affect the accuracy of their attack and Old Collegians counter-attack capitalised on this. A wayward line out from Woodville was seized by Hyam and he drove forward and offloaded to Kennett who crossed for his second try. Another turnover in our half was taken 40m up field by Mann and then popped to Leen who grabbed his third try. Nutt then nabbed his second try from a penalty tap taken quickly and catching Woodville on the back foot. As time was running out some impressively simple straight running and hitting the ball at pace by each of Mann and Leen bagged them both a further try, then Woodville had the final say with an intercept try in our 22.

2nd Grade

Old Collegians 59 v Elizabeth 5

The second grade traveled to Elizabeth for a late game under lights. The temperature was freezing and the opposition was expected to be tough. With many changes to the line-up yet again, it was a good challenge for the men from Old Collegians to sink their teeth into. From the outset though, Elizabeth were blown away. Old Collegians secured plenty of possession through accurate ruck work and excellent support for the ball carrier. This close support prevented the big Elizabeth pack from attacking isolated players to force turnovers. With quick ball in hand the backs were able to attack efficiently to produce plenty of exciting first half tries. By the 25 minute mark of the first half the game was essentially over. Elizabeth were overrun and running out of gas. A half time score of 39-0 was an ominous sign.

The second half began more scrappily than the first. Elizabeth showed fierce spirit to lift their game and they managed to secure the ball far more often, giving them a chance to apply some pressure. This stemmed the flow of points for Old Collegians who were faced with some physical challenges from their bigger opposition. Old Collegians continued to resist the Elizabeth fightback and eventually wore them down. Tries began to flow once again and Elizabeth were reduced to damage control. A final score of 59-5 was a fair reflection of the game. Spirited Elizabeth defence prevented a larger total, and a late try was fair reward for their efforts.

Old Collegians can be proud of their display of stylish rugby that was both accurate and disciplined. There were fantastic performances across the park with all players contributing. Choosing the best players from this game was extremely difficult as everyone was extremely productive, and did their job for the team wholeheartedly. An excellent game Lads!

Next week we face a much sterner test against our arch rivals Burnside, who are developing a very strong team as the season progresses. We must lift our intensity and be ready to deal with much greater pressure if we are to triumph.

Best players: Denley, Bradley, Dawes, Edgar.

A special congratulations to our two new debutants Todd Lewis and Karl Edgar who both played outstanding games. Welcome to the red and blue jersey guys!

3rd Grade

Old Collegians 24 v Woodville 24

Try: Dave Nolan (2); Sam Walwyn

Conversions: Mike Otty (3)

Penalty: Mike Otty

Best on ground: Dave Nolan, Matt Sharples, Rob Porteous

We had a great start after winning the kick-off and advancing within range for the penalty that came our way. We failed to clean up a Woodville kick into our 22 and a Woodville chaser toed the ball in-goal, follows it and dived on it to score, they convert. Our backs were moving the ball well when they had possession, often baffling the opposition. Soon a huge defensive hole opened for a try - disallowed due to a forward pass.

Woodville were aggressive in defence and attack and made ground, particularly in the hit-ups. Their backs were a mixed bag but with a few very dangerous runners. They pressed us into our 22 where we defended many phases until a Woodville penalty allowed us some relief. We gained possession and Otty broke the line with support. Clean, well-timed passes saw the ball in Nolans hands with an undefended goal line ahead. After Ottys conversion we restart with confidence and were now playing in Woodvilles half. Woodville were penalised and we kept the pressure up kicking for touch. Walwyn scored after the lineout win, converted by Otty. Score is now a healthy 17-7 where it stays till halftime.

Woodville started the second half with renewed vigor and soon were hammering our defence close to the goal-line. They forced the first of four consecutive penalties, until the fifth put us a man down for 10. On the next phase a second player was sent to the bin and a penalty try awarded. With only 13 on field we lifted and held Woodville to only one converted try in a period that could easily have seen a scoring flood. The score is 17-21 as we regained 15 men. Our excellent lineout execution had Woodville avoiding lineouts, at every opportunity. When awarded a penalty about 45 out they opted for a shot and their kicker did the job to put Woodville 7 points ahead, with only a few minutes left. We turned the ball over in our half and the backs worked the ball to Nolan, who found his mark out of position. He was nearly brought down after breaking the defensive line but recovered to score. His elation seemed to match his exhaustion after the 70-meter dash. The reliable Otty converted to draw the match 24-24.

Another gutsy, fight-back avoiding defeat. The players should be proud of their performance under trying circumstances.

Old Collegians 58 v Barossa/NEDS 0

Try scorers: Ollie Horne (1), Magnus Illman (2), Brad Killick (3), Ben Viljoen (1), Austin Teagle (1),

Conversions: Ben Viljoen (4)

We travelled to play the folk of the North at the Elizabeth ground against opposition who have tested us previously and always fight hard upfront. The game started well with much better retention of possession, better driving over the ruck and a more reliable lineout. Barossa fought hard to turn over good ball and made the scrums somewhat unpleasant with their bigger pack. Tries soon flowed through fast hands and allowed Austin to open the scoring. Quick delivery by Patrick and close support play from the back row harried the opposition and Brad (I fly and score trys) Killick went over three times for a world prop record. Notable games were also had by Jasper Carter who tackled well and Adam who came in to play at the pointy end in the front row. Josh took more ball this week and went over the gain line with force, making for better carrys and ground position.

We continued to notch up further tries including an interesting one from Ben "The Rubber Man" Viljoen when he bent over the back of his tackler like a Giraffe leaning over a fence to eat grass. As the second half moved on we saw a return to individual performances where maybe earlier passing and greater movement along the backline would have been better as better teams will not allow us to get away with solo efforts on this scale. Fitness looked good and good to see everyone getting better at cleaning up and driving forward. However next week we have Burnside a much greater test.

U14s

Old Collegians 50 v Barossa/NEDS 0

It was the turn of the home team to get the game started with a short kick picked up by Seaton and Old Collegians were quickly into attack mode. After a couple of phases of play, a maul moved the ball closer to Old Collegians try line and once the ball was free Elijah was over the line making the first try of the game; converted by Max Monfries. The next try came as a result of a strong run by Eddie making all but the length of the field. After the breakdown Seaton was final receiver and was able to score Old Collegians' second try. This again was converted by Max M. The next quick try occurred after a spirited run through the NEDs defence by Lefatu. Max M again made the conversion. After some great work by the forwards to hold back the NEDs advances play ended back in the Old Collegians 22m zone and after several phases of hard attacking play Oscar found the try line. The conversion this time was made by Elijah. After a great run by Andrew Macfadyen and the forwards well into the Old Collegians' 22m NEDs regained possession and were back in attack mode. This was; however, thwarted and the ball was kicked out of the NEDs 22m zone and with a fortunate bounce picked up be Eddie and after several great passes Jack was the final receiver and made the try. No conversion this time. The NEDs were close to their try line however Old Collegians regained possession and a quick thinking kick placed the ball back into the Old Collegians' end. After a difficult roll of the ball Seaton picked it up and reached the try line with Max M making the conversion.

The second half began in a similar manner to the first with Old Collegians gaining possession after some good support at the breakdown with Max Linton taking the ball into the Old Collegians 22m. The ball found Jack and then Hugh who almost made it to the try line. Again after great support in the breakdown by the forwards Oscar placed the ball over the line and made his second try for the game. Not converted. Brady received the ball from the kick and Old Collegians were again into the 22m. The forwards moved the ball forward close to the try line; however, Eddie was held up. The game from this point onwards did not maintain the same structure as was seen in the first half and NEDs were able to maintain a little more ball possession. The Old Collegians' boys continued to apply the pressure under some interesting circumstances and managed to get the ball over the line, this time Eddie did not convert.

Well done Old Collegians' U14s as you all played well showing great commitment to your team.

U12s

Old Collegians 50 v Barossa/NEDS 7

Most of the scoring occurred in the first half where the Old Collegians displayed a capacity to ruck consistently and feed the ball out to the back line. In the second half, Barossa/NEDS organised their defensive capacity and thwarted several attempts at a try. This half was characterised by tough forward charges and hard tackling mostly within the Old Collegians 10 metre line.

The first try was scored by Charlie MacFayden, after a good evasive run. The second try was scored by Morris Clementson; having backed up Harry L. who had captured precious meters. Other tries were scored by: Harry (falling on a loose ball over the try line), Alecia (scoring two tries, both after long runs down the pitch) Willem (scoring two) and Meg. Clayton played consistently throughout the games setting up scoring moves.

Seen tackling with vigour were: Meg, Katie, Veaco and Tom M.

It was an enjoyable game to watch and a good effort, the players appearing to work well as a team. Well done!

U8s

Old Collegians v Barossa/NEDS

The U8s turned in their best performance for the season to date against Barossa/NEDs led ably by Oliver in his first match as skipper. Our squad of 16 was reduced to 11 as we volunteered players to don the opposition jersey to ensure a competitive game. The U8s started well and never let up. The team focus has been (and continues to be) on what we do at the breakdown and our structure (maintaining a back line) and it was very pleasing that it came together on the weekend.

Our "hit up" players including Salvatore and Eddie continued their recent form. They were backed up by our running players: Tyson, Louis and Jackson (both). Noah, Oliver, Sasha, Marcus and Joseph worked hard to provide support. Jack again showed that he can be a team player by putting in another selfless performance and, along with Tyson, produced a couple of memorable moments helping win back possession in the breakdown. Mawson turned up pre-game with a big shiner and left with a split lip to complete the "box set" - his tackling aggression continues to be a great example to his teammates. Ivan and Salvatore also deserve a mention for their tackling particularly given the many times their efforts were in the last line of defense.

Louis is the recipient of the Best Player trophy this week - though he isn't able to train with us, he tries hard to pick up on the team rules and structures that we try to instill. His hard running through traffic along with his efforts in tight, makes him a worthy recipient this week.

U7s

Old Collegians v Barossa/NEDS

21 kids turned up to face a full side from Barossa/NEDS at Elizabeth RUFC this week. A very high scoring game followed against the strong Barossa/NEDS side resulting in a tie 9 all between the two.

Encouraging play from Callum Reeks with nifty footwork to score his first try of the season and consistent quick moves form Jack Taylor who also scored. Strong performances and tries from the usual players who are fast progressing and working towards joining U8s next year including Dan Boulden, Jack George, Joe Lohse and Will Tanner who are starting to play more like rugby players with their footwork, passing and less like touch players.

Coaches are starting to progress players into passing rather than going down with the ball every time and players are starting to listen to coaches more consistently to get back on side quicker and run straight (and in the right direction...).

Strong play and good hands from Anika Sos and Azalia Czeglik resulted in certificates of encouragement. Angus Sidwell and Callum Reeks also got encouragement awards for first try (Callum) and contributing to the team (Angus). Daniel Boulden scored player of the day for his three tries, improved listening including running straight to the try line rather than running straight into touch.

A great game against a strong and organised side, which showed much proof of continual progress in some of the basics.

2nd Grade

Old Collegians 24 v Adelaide University 22

Due to continuing forced personnel changes the Second Grade team looked very different to the last team that ran out against Onkaparinga. Nonetheless it was a strong team on paper and confidence was high. From the kick off; however, we began terribly. The Adelaide University kick off was allowed to bounce and bounced straight into an Adelaide University players path who strolled through to score untouched after 5 seconds of play. After the restart, normality returned and we pressed forward pressuring Adelaide University. However; a soft turnover gifted Adelaide University the ball. This was followed by a long period without the ball as we conceded a few penalties and the referee decided that 4 penalties was enough to warrant a yellow card. The final penalty was converted and we were down 0-8 and struggling to get into the game.

Possession was scarce as continuing infringements regularly gifted the ball to the opposition and released any pressure we had built up. When we finally secured the ball the pack knuckled down and began a furious onslaught of pick and drive that battered Adelaide University back onto their own try-line. Hard work by Wonders, Power and Cleary paid handsome dividends as Adelaide University were overrun by a well-deserved try.

At half time scores were close and the key to victory for Old Collegians was discipline. Continual penalties had thwarted our game plan and we needed to adapt to what the referee was asking us to do. The second half was an improvement but there was plenty of room for improvement. Solid tries from structured play sealed the game but a late lapse allowed Adelaide University a consolation try and a scoreline which greatly flattered them. A two point win, 24-22, in testing circumstances was a good reward for a win that was characterized by dogged determination rather than flair and entertainment. This determination to prevail, after a draining 15 minute period of stoic defence, is a wonderful thing to see.

Rugby can be ugly sometimes, its in the nature of the game, but winning in these circumstances is a question of mental strength and it seems that the 2nd Grade have plenty to build a successful season with. Upward from here lads!

Best: Wonders, Cleary, McDonough.

3rd Grade

Old Collegians 31 v Adelaide University 27

Try: Paddy Walsh; Todd Grant; Phil McBride; Justin Elder; Ryan Nielsen

Conversions: Blake Giarola (3)

Best on ground: Will McLeay; Phil McBride; Rob Porteous

Adelaide University started surprisingly strongly and pressed us in our 22 for the first five minutes until we transgressed and Adelaide University slotted the goal. Slowly we gained some structure and made some promising raids into Adelaide Universitys territory. McLeay was carrying the ball strongly and making plenty of ground. The ball was passed wide to Paddy to score on the right wing. Adelaide University applied pressure again and were rewarded with another penalty. Adelaide Universitys scrum was strong and a win midfield caught our defence flat-footed as they move the ball wide avoiding our defence for a 60 metre try under the posts. Play moved back and forth until Adelaide University lobbed an attacking kick that Stew cleaned up. Under plenty of pressure from chasers, he kicked some 60+ metres to find touch metres from Adelaide Universitys goal line. We won the lineout and pressure the line for Todd to score. Blake converted and half time arrived with us behind 13 - 12.

Five minutes into second half we were again under serious pressure after we botch recovery of a penetrating Adelaide University kick. We held wave after wave for some 10 minutes before conceding a try converted by Adelaide Universitys impressive kicker. Play moved back and forth until Adelaide University were penalised for a deliberate knock-down. Booboos touch finder placed our lineout close enough for our win to result in lots of trouble for Adelaide University as Phil McBride scored his first senior try. We were now 17-20 down. This time it was Adelaide University who broke the back and forth flow when they cleared the ball to an undefended right wing who scored another long range try - also under the posts. The conversion put us 17-27 down with 10 minutes to go. We lost 5 minutes to time-off for an on-field injury to be attended. The players were having none of this, "too late now' and from the restart quickly moved the ball within range for Justin to see and exploit the opportunity. Blake converted and as Adelaide University restarted we had 150 seconds of the match remaining. Adelaide University, predictably, kicked deep and we recovered the ball cleanly and commenced an attack. Many phases of committed and error free rugby found us in Adelaide Universitys 22, where we were awarded a scrum slightly left of mid-field. Good clean ball from the base, gave us the options and within moments Booboo had placed it between the posts. Blake converted for a nail-biting 31-27 bonus point win.

Womens

Old Collegians 64 v Burnside 12

In a welcome return to the winners' circle the team dominated Burnside except for a 10 to 15 minute lapse towards the end of the first half. The scrum was dominant throughout the game which gave good ball to our fast ever running backs. Several of the tries were scored from the oppositions 22 with big runs by McKenzie Sadler, followed shortly after by her mother Steph Martin and then other daughter D'arcy Sadler. Not to be outdone the front row also got into try action with a big effort from our loosehead, El Casciano, scoring a try.

Luisa Raikiwasa with a best on ground performance in her new fluorescent boots again dominated the field with a best on ground performance featuring big 20 - 30 metre line break and scoring 2 tries. She was ably supporting by Ziggy Morrison in the No 7 jersey who was relentless at the breakdown and shut out her opposite number. The only thing that let us down was a lack of poise and some indiscipline at a time when we were dominating the opposition but for some reason felt compelled to rush and not regain field control.

The try of the day was to Mackenzie Sadler who ran from the opposition 22 kicking and dribbling the ball to finally regain possession just before our try line when for a heart stopping moment, the team wondered whether there was sufficient downward pressure on the ball but were relieved when the ref awarded the try. Beavers was on top form scoring 7 conversions.

Finally, the team is on a bye now until 4 July when we face Souths at home.

Tries: Mackenzie Sadler 5, Raikiwasa 2, Casciano, Darcy Sadler, Martin.

Best Players: Raikiwasa, Mackenzie Sadler and Ziggy Morrison.

U18s

Old Collegians 0 v Brighton 22

A good competitive performance from Old Colls had us down 0-5 at half time against a Brighton side wanting to run the ball at every opportunity. With superior possession in the second half Brighton ran in a further 3 tries, converting 1 of them. We had our opportunities to score, especially when we ran the ball down our backline, but kicking the ball down the throat of the Brighton full back lost the initiative at key times. There were two things that stood out all day and I mention them so we can rectify them at training. We were second to the ball at rucks and breakdowns all day thus surrendering our own ball and failing to pinch theirs. We can solve this by increasing our fitness, speed and strength through training as a TEAM and attendance to training has been slack the last three weeks. I realise that there have been some byes for us recently but good teams train hard at all times to maintain fitness and improve all skills as a TEAM. If we train hard together we actually know how we are going to perform on match days instead of winging it by chance. The second item, that cost us a lot of possession, was inaccurate kicking allowing Brighton to run the ball back at us. Solution here is improving our fitness, speed and communication skills. This is solved by training as a FULL squad and understanding each others capabilities. So, time to draw a line in the sand lads. We have the talent to improve our game and win this competition, but only if we help ourselves by regular full squad training. I am sure you will make the right decision. Finally can I thank the number of U16s who turned out for us. This gave us a full bench and the ability to rotate players.

U12s

Old Collegians v Adelaide University (Scratch Match)

Saturday saw Old Collegians' U12s welcome Adelaide University to Tregenza. Due to low numbers in the Adelaide University side we had agreed to a scratch match where we supported them by topping up players (6 OC players) to ensure a game of 15 a side. This approach continues to support the wider rugby community. The spirit of the game showed why Rugby is such a fantastic sport and all the players, from both sides were a credit to their own clubs. Yet again we saw some of our players best performances when running at Old Collegians or tackling our own players. Adelaide University kept the game tight all the way to the end with maybe a score in it at the final whistle in Old Collegians' favour. Adelaide University had great players who were particularly hungry for the ball in 50:50 situations and with ball in hand. Something we need to work on.

Highlights for Old Collegians had to be Siobhan playing her first game and storming down the right wing with tacklers bouncing off her to score her first try. A feat almost replicated if it weren't for a very tough 'tackle' near Adelaide Universitys line. Her performance didn't stop in attack with a try saving tackle on our very own Jayden Hazard who was closing in on our try line wearing the black shirt of Adelaide University. Veaco stood in at fly-half admirably and created great forward momentum every time he touched the ball. He was justifiably rewarded for a sharply taken try. Our Captain Harry List powered over for a try showing that strength and determination does count for a lot. Tom Deakin also showed his bull-like qualities both in the scrum and with ball in hand crashing through attempted tackles at a key stage in the game keeping our side going forward. Jemima was tough tackling all round the park. Willem showed eagerness in a double tackle as did his sister, Alecia, in all her facets of the game - scoring for both sides. Our hands along the line were great this week and 'Noggin' demonstrated great link play. We still have to work on areas showing hunger going in for the 50:50 ball, along with rucking and counter-rucking. Good development and performances all round. Well done!

U10s

Old Collegians v Adelaide University

A home game, full pitch and perfect weather conditions all lead to another great day for the u10s. This game was also the first game that the players all played in positions. Although there is still room for improvements, everyone is adapting well to the new structure. Sam Lindow showed some great skills and was awarded most improved performance. The tackling award went to Sam Brady for some very impressive and clever tackling.

Player of the match was awarded to Lachlan Bell for some great running and team playing. Overall, a fantastic day and great teamwork from all players. Final score 10 tries to 3.

U8s

Old Collegians v Adelaide University

The Old Collegians U8s produced another spirited performance Saturday against Adelaide University on what was a perfect day for free flowing rugby. Players were challenged on two fronts: 1) Playing on a full half pitch; and 2) Having to put the opposition jersey on during the game to help Adelaide University make up the numbers (pleasingly there were a number of volunteers). The end result was a terrific contest between reasonably matched sides.

Salvatore "The Bull" Costanzo opened the Old Collegians' scoring with a scorching run right down the middle and continued to provide strength at the breakdown as well as leadership throughout the game. The scoreboard continued to tick over thanks to big efforts in the rucks from the likes of Finlay, Jack, Noah and Sasha which often culminated in tries (Jackson Denley producing a couple of spectacular Campese-like finishes). We also welcome back Torence for his first game post injury and he didn't let us down!

Tackling is something that is always work in progress at this level but Tyson, Mawson, Eddie and Salvatore continued to show the way making some big tackles that put the opposition on the back foot. Other notable efforts came from Ivan who is always creating tries, as well as Marcus and Joey who used their pace to gather some attacking yards. A solid team effort overall; hence the "team" trophy this week. We continue to battle with structure (keeping a line etc.) and will keep plugging away at this at training.

U7s

Old Collegians v Adelaide University

25 U/7 kids turned up at Home on Saturday to play a strong Adelaide University side. Old Collegians' U7s narrowly defeated Adelaide University. After this match there was a scratch match between Old Collegians' Blue and Red.

Great play from all the kids seeing progress being made particularly with passing. A lot of the faster kids are now focusing on running in the right direction and heading straight through the line but there is still much work to be done here. Tries scored against Adelaide University were from: Jack George, Hudson Lindow, Alex Punshon and 2 from William Tanner.

Encouragement Awards for our newest player Ezra Pretorius - who showed a good grasp of the game for a first timer, Oscar Angove who showed some strong moves and good passing/catching, Harry Menz - who got a couple of good runs and passes in and Hudson Lindow - who played consistently, listened and scored a runaway try. Good job to Daniel Boulden who volunteered to play (and scored!) for Adelaide University to help make up the numbers.

Player of the week went to Jack Taylor who is showing strong promise with his big runs, scoring in the scratch match and for his listening and passing skills.

Thanks to the parents for modeling great team spirit and encouragement for the kids. Focus going forward will continue to be on key foundation skills of listening to the Coaches, following instructions quickly, passing and running straight.

1st Grade

Tries: Jason Hyam plus a penalty try

Conversions: Will Sadler (2)

Best Players: whole squad

Old Collegians had a tough day of it in general against a revitalised Onkaparinga, as thin numbers on the ground across the senior grades meant reserves were limited and several players were backing up for 2 and, in the case of Liam McDonough, even 3 games. Many thanks go to those players who made themselves available to help out the other teams.

The first grade started forcefully, making good progress into the Onkaparinga 22. A powerful scrum put the defenders on the back foot and drove almost to the line, allowing Hyam easy access to the try line to score off the back. From the restart Old Colls regained possession and maintained control to drive back into the 22 again, forcing another scrum 5m out which was engineered so firmly that it split Onkas apart and we were awarded a penalty try.

Old Collegians were in a good position at 14 - 0 with 20 minutes gone, however a series of injuries across the team in the next 10 minutes meant we lost momentum and our ability to compete as comprehensively as desired as players absorbed the physically punishing game. Onkas, by contrast, were gaining in strength and managed to pull back a try towards the end of the first half.

The start of the second half was all Onkas and they held possession for the first 10 minutes until they finally worked far enough into Old Collegians territory to even up the score with a try from their own scrum. Each side then had their chances and traded possession with the game going from end to end, but both sides struggled to finish, and Old Collegians were fatiguing and running out of bodies. Onkas again spent another long spell in our 22, eventually building enough pressure with a series of scrums to work their way over for another try and the lead.

Old Collegians were still in it with time available, but were unable to re-establish enough dominance to make the difference. Onkaparinga sealed the win close to time with a turnover tackle in mid-field leading to a 50m runaway try. Old Collegians fought to the end and can hold their heads up with the efforts put in by all the players and reserves.

U16s

Old Collegians 24 v Onkaparinga 22

Tries: Rory Illman 2, Awin 2

Conversions: Ben Viljoen 2

The reigning champions from last season were always going to be formidable opposition and certainly with their experienced backline and strong forwards they proved a hard foe. Again Old Collegians seemed to struggle in the early stages in loose play allowing themselves to be played off the ball, but powerful tackling and some great individual running from the forwards allowed momentum to build up in contrast to last week. Great solo efforts by Austin Teague and Ben Hower allowed them to break the gain line but we failed to capitalise and dominate the ruck. Lineouts were better but still not allowing as much clean possession as needed. Under pressure from repeated breaks through their crafty No 10, Onkaparinga broke through for the first score. A spirited fight back ensued and slick passing enabled Awin to scurry to the line at his usual high speed and OC had hit back. Very soon Rory had joined him on the board after a scintillating run with excellent slight of hand by Ollie "the Magician" flicking through fast ball. Tackling was top notch with caution thrown to the wind by Michael, Harrison and James Rees who of course complimented the usual mob ie Alfie , Doug and Tom taking the game to the oppo.

A sharp half time talk and the team became more focused and soon two tries came from superb breaks and passing to both Rory and Awin. More could have come but we failed to look for early passes to capitalise on overlaps and this need further work. Some unfortunate decisions allowed Onkaparinga to get back into contention making for a close game. A missed conversion gave us the win which I think was deserved. Looking good but we allowed unnecessary pressure to mount on us and need to go hard with all focus on making it our ball at loose play to stop bigger oppositions taking advantage of us. Tackling is wonderful to watch. A special welcome to Josh our new lock forward who survived the whole game and is a lucky addition to the side, great game. Also to Marcel and Campbell in particular who fought hard and has availed himself to undertake whatever rugby position he is asked and is an unsung hero. A couple of byes so lets not relax too much lest we lose momentum. This weeks naughty boy was Bad Boy Ben penalised for trying to tackle the opposing team.

U14s

Old Collegians 63 v Onkaparinga 10

The wind was cold at the Wilfred Taylor Reserve; however, the spectators were to witness a hot game. Old Collegians had won the toss and soon after having made the opening kick off gained possession. The first try was made by James DuPreez and converted by George Hewitt. After a strong run by the forwards the ball was passed to the backs and Lefatu Egglestone ran straight down the sideline through the Onkaparingas defence to make the second try for the game. George again converted this try.

The game continued to flow with everyone contributing to the next 3 trys, one each to Magnus Duckett, James DuPreez and Edwin Dodd. Again, all converted by George. The first half was stopped early as one of the Onkaprainga players had been injured after a tackle. However, was able to play on in the second term.

The second half opened as the first with Seaton Siegfried finishing off a great couple of phases of play with a try. The Onkaparinga boys were looking to prevent the "duck" and worked the Old Collegians' defence line to find a hole and made the first of their two tries for the game. This try was not converted. The Old Collegian boys struck back with a try each to Elijah Moaga, Edwin Dodd and James DuPreez. Conversion of the tries were performed by George Hewitt and one by Max Monfries. The forwards and backs all worked together holding off the Onkaparinga attack; however, Onkaparinga using their kicking game were again able to push past the defence line for their second try. This however, was not converted.

A great win the U14s Old Collegian boys as all made an excellent contribution holding out Onkaparinga to only 2 tries.

U12s

Old Collegians 14 v Onkaparinga 24

The U12s travelled to Onkaporinga with a full squad of 23 ready for a big game. The spirit of rugby was in full force with us offering two players to the opposition, ensuring a game of 15 a-side rugby. This is part of the player sharing agreement we have entered into to maximise the pitch time for our players during the course of the season and to support the development of clubs where numbers are low.

Onkaparinga were a well organised outfit and this highlighted some weaknesses in the Old Collegians team. On a full pitch the U12s needed to make the ball do more of the work. Repeated solo runs proved less effective than previous weeks, with players often being isolated and turned over. We have a fantastic backline; however, our inability to use all 7 backs meant we were often running back into the larger Onkaparinga pack. In defence we just didn't get the tackles in early, allowing some very good Onkaparinga runners to pick up the pace, making it more difficult for ourselves. We will need to increase our speed in defence and the tackle count across the team, and not rely on a few players to take down the opposition.

On a positive note Callum Moran showed a great understanding of the flanker position by providing great link play throughout the game. We did manage to run in tries from Clayton and Alecia, however the greatest applause came as winger Katie Sharkey put in a thumping tackle on a much larger attacking player. He went down like a sack of potatoes and technically superb. Carl Arnold was also seen covering a lot of ground to make crucial tackles. In the latter part of the game we started to show some of the real class we have in our side with old and new players alike.

U10s - Round 6

Old Collegians v Brighton

A tough day at the office! Without a doubt one of the toughest games the U10s have had in a while. After the first 10 minutes we were 2 tries down but then some great running by our 2 Maxs and some great forward play saw us a few tries ahead. Shortly into the second half Ryan Barlow had to leave the field after colliding heads with Max Richards. A colossal tackle none-the-less.

Another few big runs by James List and some awesome play by Piper Monfries saw us finish up 2 tries ahead. A really great team effort once again with best tackler going to Ryan Barlow and player of the day to Piper Monfries.

A team most definitely improving week to week.

U10s

Old Collegians v Onkaparinga

It was a wet full pitch for the match, and even that couldn't dampen the team excitement to play! We had a hard game ahead without Coach Craig Barlow and only three subs. Thank you to Pablo who stepped up to coach on field and did a great job, always harder on a full pitch! The game was reasonably close, but the tenacious U10s held out for another win. This is great considering we had the fun run on our training night. Only one minor injury to Max Richards who recovered quickly and went back on field, his tackling prowess was crucial to the win. James List carried through some great tries and is running strong.

Jake Branson put in a strong presence in the ruck and this encouraged the team on. Best Player went to Ethan Frew whos game is really picking up, his teamwork helped set up James for his tries. Best Tackler went to Max Richards, who repeatedly stopped the advance of Onkaparinga. Congratulations from the coaching team and also to our smaller players who fielded against a larger opposition!

U8s

A later kick off time than we have had in previous years led to a less sleepy start to the U8 game against Onkaparinga this week. We played 9 a side and all 9 worked as a team right from the start- running straight and hard, putting the ball back when tackled, and rucking over really well. This lead to some great team tries to start the half. Our tackling was also vastly improved, and we kept Onkaparinga scoreless for long periods with Finlay, Salvi, Joseph, Mawson, Eddie and Louis in particular hitting tackles with their shoulders, putting them down and then bouncing straight back up again to make another one! The U14s watching on the sideline were amazed by the tenacity and skills of some of the youngest members of the club.

It was a refreshing change to hardly hear the passionate coach on the field in the first half, as the players were doing the right thing most of the time without being reminded.

Our efforts did undulate as the half progressed as we ran in try after try, and there were patches when we lost our form and allowed Onkaringa back into the game. A few oranges and a gentle chat at half time reminded the players of how we want them to play the game, and our good rugby came to the fore once more after this. Tyson continued to get to his feet to play the ball, Ivan and Jackson were again hard to put down, and Joey and Noah showed great team work in the rucks. Special mention to Marcus for his first try- a scintillating length of the pitch maneuver, leaving would be tacklers flailing like beached fish in his wake. Also to new Jackson for his first game in the U8s- running with the ball in 2 hands as his coaches have asked all the players to do, and to Jack for winning player of the day for his unselfish work at the break down- he cleaned out and cleaned out and cleaned out.

There were hardly any attempted ball strips and more tackling and getting to our feet to play the ball in this game, and this is great to see. Our understanding of when to commit to the ruck and when to stay out to join the attack or defend the line is improving and this, as well as "first 2 clean out" will remain our focus at training.

It was another successful day on the scoreboard, and the coaches will continue to keep encouraging the Old Collegians' U8 to work as a team.

U7s

This weeks game was against Onkaparinga who fielded a full side against our 2 sides (total 20 players for U7s this week). The usual strong play from the Will, Joe and Alex resulted in a collective 7 tries between them. This was supplemented by a try in the corner from Quillien Bleakley nicely set-up by Harry Menz. Big runs from PJ Sos, Tristan Kidd, Angus Sidwell and Zack showed increased confidence with the ball and caused them to nab the encouragement awards of the week. Consistent play and good ball skills by Alex Punshon were rewarded with the player of the week trophy.

A great week for the under sevens with so many of the kids skills and energy levels coming together to play some orderly games. Listening skills, heading in the right direction, passing between players and some incredible side stepping action all came together and produced great results. Old Collegians' narrowly defeated the Onkaparinga side. Great support from the parents as usual.

1st Grade

Old Collegians 10 v Southern Suburbs 26

Tries: Tim Pickerill, Chris Bartlett

Best Payers: Chris Bartlett, Peter Cross, Delano Leen

On what was a perfect day for running rugby, Old Collegians had the majority of possession but found it difficult to convert that into points.

Southern Suburbs were strong up front and adept at keeping the pace of the rucks down to slow our possession and recycle. Most of the first half was spent in Southern Suburbs half, with the difference between the two teams being that each time Southern Suburbs got into Old Collegians' territory they came away with a score.

Even as our forward momentum was blunted, Leen, Pickerill and Bartlett did find space on the wings and made ground, but our dropped last passes or good covering defence from Southern Suburbs kept us from converting the hard work into a result. By contrast, three times Southern Suburbs were satisfied with drawing a penalty from 30m or so out and taking the points on offer, to be 9-0 up closing in on half time. Old Collegians' reduced the gap to 9-5 after getting a penalty, opting to kick for territory and driving it up in Southern Suburbs 22 from the resulting line out, before passing wide to the other side of the field for Pickerill to score in the corner.

Old Collegians took back the lead straight away from the second half kick off return, as Bartlett broke through and beat several defenders down the wing to score our second try. This was to be last score by Old Collegians as, whilst we still looked confident with ball in hand, our use of the time with the ball was often inefficient and we continued to struggle with the physicality of the rucks. Southern Suburbs were dangerous and well supported in their counter-attack, scoring two-second half tries, then camping in our 22 for the last 10 minutes and cleverly running down the clock before taking a final penalty goal.

2nd Grade

Old Collegians 35 v Southern Suburbs 24

The weather was again kind to Old Collegians as we arrived at Bailey Reserve to see a great pitch under even better skies. After a bye last week we were itching to get into some good rugby.

Frustratingly, we got ourselves into a total rut. For the majority of the game we were uncharacteristically ill-disciplined, lazy and upset by the officiating. We failed to impose our patterns onto a Southern Suburbs team that thrived on chaos and lack of structure. Lack of focus and missed tackles allowed Southern Suburbs to take the lead after our early try to an excellent solo effort by Ryan Nielson.

Despite playing at about 35% of our capabilities, we occasionally showed glimpses of our potential, and Southern Suburbs were made to look a bit ordinary but, only briefly. Mistakes flowed and frustrations reached boiling point.

At half time Southern Suburbs led 23-10.

The half-time break brought a few deep breaths and some quiet words from the coaching staff, and the players entered the second half with clearer minds and a new focus. However; frustrations became the focus of our game. As the game meandered towards full-time, all looked lost. With attitude and morale at rock bottom, there was nowhere to go except up. With ten minutes remaining we were still 13 points adrift, and desperately needing a spark. The spark finally came in the form of a lovely yet simple pass from Wonders to Billets who was running straight and hard with purpose. Billets scored under the posts and suddenly we looked alive again. Players found their voice, discipline and determination to play good football. Suddenly passes found their targets, tackles were made and decisions were taken with confidence. A ten minute period of total contrast to the rest of the game yielded three tries. Good tries! Team tries that excited coaches and spectators alike. Tries that made everyone wonder where our talent had been all day and resulted in a welcome but unexpected win of 35-24.

After a day like this there are often more negatives than positives, but focusing on negatives is pointless if you are trying to play positive rugby

This team has more than enough raw talent to be successful but needs to realise that talent will never replace hard work and desire. Souths gave us a valuable lesson in determination and physical commitment. The silver lining on a bleak display is that we are capable of pulling ourselves out of the mire, not an easy task for a group under extreme pressure. This is a rare quality for any team to possess and is extremely pleasing to see at this early stage of the season.

Congratulations on a miraculous comeback lads! Next time lets open the game playing to our full potential and save the coach from a heart attack.

MATCH REPORT ROUND 3

Old Collegians 54 v Elizabeth 0

A perfect day welcomed our team to Gleneagles reserve. A pitch in perfect condition and clear, dry weather meant we had few excuses for not turning out some fine running rugby.

Our only hurdle was a physically imposing Elizabeth team that had given us a tough time in the pre-season cup. While big and powerful, we were confident our superior fitness and skills would prevail.

The game began in predictable fashion. We were on the front foot early making a positive attack but a turnover gifted Elizabeth possession and the chance to impress their game plan on us. It was predictable, but nonetheless effective. They controlled possession for an extremely long period, playing a tight forward orientated game with plenty of picking and driving. The forward tussle was immense, and the bigger Elizabeth team tested our mettle with continued brute force for nearly 25 minutes. The 2nds were superbly patient and disciplined throughout this period though, giving up few yards and fewer penalties. The frustration was starting to show in the Elizabeth pack, and when we finally got our hands on the ball we moved the ball wide smoothly to feed our rapid wings who raced in a try from long range. This had an immediate effect on our opposition, who dropped their guard and allowed our backs another opportunity to attack with pace and width. This second stunning attack produced another try for Old Collegians and at the halftime break we were two scores clear. Elizabeth were suddenly in trouble despite having a huge possession and territory advantage. Heads clearly dropped and the outstanding defensive work of the Old Collegians pack had broken them.

The second half became a display of attacking flair by the entire 2nds team. Players ran onto the passes with pace and confidence. The correct options were taken without exception and every scoring opportunity was seized. Hard work and commitment in the first half was paying healthy dividends in the second half. Spectators were given a tremendous show as tries were run in from all over the park while when Elizabeth had the ball our defensive efforts complimented our attacking prowess.

By the full-time whistle it was a resounding win, 54-0.

Whilst our attacking was brilliant, it was the effort to keep a powerful side scoreless, despite Elizabeth having plenty of the ball, that brought a broad grin to the coachs face. This kind of effort is a solid platform to build a successful season from.

Well played everyone, a day to be proud of!

3rd Grade

Old Collegians 7 v Barossa Rams 31

Womens

Old Collegians 5 v Southern Suburbs 17

Try: Bec Jones

Best Players: Everyone

In the teams first loss of the season, the score line does not do justice to a massive effort by the team that was from the 20th minute playing with only 13 players after injuries to Kate Reynolds and Mackenzie Sadler.

The South forward pack was big and mobile and put our tight 5 under pressure for most of the day and deprived our top back line of quick ball. A quick try within the first 10 minutes to Southern Suburbs put us under pressure notwithstanding a huge defensive effort by the team which left us going to the half time break 5 - 0. We were able to equalise with a try to Bec Jones not long after the resumption and held the score to 5 all until Southern Suburbs scored a further two tries and a conversion towards the end of the game when our understrength team was overwhelmed by 4 subs from Southern Suburbs.

The team displayed huge character and spirit in continuing to tackle and chase Southern Suburbs until the end of the game with inspiring work by Beaves, Jones, Morris and the captain Lusia Raikiwase who made big runs and put in big hits.

As coach David Linder-Patton remarked, a year ago the team would have gone down by a huge margin but not any more.

Under 16s

Old Collegians 45 v Southern Suburbs 5

Tries: Magnus Illman 4, Ben Viljoen 1, Nick Barry 1, Doug Pratt 1

Conversions: Ben Viljoen 5

With the return match coming so soon the crowd were expecting a great running game again and so it was. Unfortunately, for Southern Suburbs they had a significant injury toll and so we had to play uncontested scrums with some of their U14s players kindly filling in. Old Collegians started well with 2 well worked tries but then proceeded to go to sleep having a try scored in return as the swing defence failed to move across quickly enough.

Strong rucking by Southern Suburbs and some giveaway penalties meant although posting up well we were losing unnecessary possession again. However; yet another blazing run by Magnus with excellent support play once more allowed Old Collegians to stretch their lead. A further excellent try by Doug showed the power of this attack. Our defence and tackling have gone to a new level with excellent man to man marking from Michael Clifton, Ollie and Awin as well as our ball hungry wings, Patrick, Jasper, Campbell and Marcel. James Rees launched himself several times into the opposition and only one dark moment ensued with Brad "I didn't mean it" spending time in the naughty chair vacated only the week before by Campbell. Much concern was made over Harrisons recurrent groin injury and much advice given. A good performance by everyone and we look forward to our home game with Brighton.

Under 14s

Old Collegians 36 v Southern Suburbs 14

There was a tot of expectation to this game. Having recently played Southern Suburbs at Tregenza last weekend and losing there was an underlying expectation to even the score.

Southern Suburbs won the toss and had decided to take the first kick. This happened to work to the advantage of the Old Collegians with a great steal by Tane Pardoe. The following phases enabled Seaton to complete a fantastic run finishing in a try. George Hewitt converted the try. What a great start to the game.

This try must have stirred Southern Suburbs as they put a lot of pressure on the Old Collegians, keeping the play in the Southern Suburbs forward zone. There was a strong defensive line maintained by the Old Collegians; however, this was broken and Southern Suburbs were able to equalise the score.

There was some fantastic work by the forwards to test the fortitude of the Southern Suburbs defence enabling Tane push forward with the pack and score the next try. This was unfortunately not converted. There was some excellent play that enabled Seaton to land another try that was converted. The score happened to be 19 to 14 in the favour of Old Collegians.

The half time briefing had given the Old Collegians boys the inspiration to work even harder in the second half to show that they had the strength to take whatever Souths could throw at them.

There was some great work in the forward line with a couple of very enjoyable mauls gaining some precious territory. The conclusion of this great work was to enable Eddy to push forward and score a try. George completed with another conversion.

The remainder of the second half continued again with some enjoyable phases of play that included some additional mauls again gaining ground.

The boys were feeling confident and whenever the Southern Suburbs players broke free to run with the ball the backs made sure that that was not going to result in Southern Suburbs reaching the try line as they were stopped in their tracks. Jack Richards made a magnificent tackle that stopped a Southern Suburbs player preventing what would have been a sure run to the Southern Suburbs try line. After a short stop in play enabling Jack to get back onto his feet he was able to continue defending against Southern Suburbs attack again tackling down the their players.

Southern Suburbs continued to fight on however once Old Collegians gained possession of the ball the they were again showing their skill and fitness with some great phases of play enabling Seaton to make a couple of strong runs to the try line. The contribution from the whole team was such that for the whole second half of the game, the Old Collegians were able to prevent Southern Suburbs advancing their score.

The team showed a marked improvement from last Saturdays game. Well done to all.

Official Score: Old Collegians 20 v Southern Suburbs - Due to a shortfall of Southern Suburbs Players

Scratch Match: Old Collegians 48 v Southern Suburbs 15

By agreement a scratch match ensued with Old Collegians donating 7 or 8 players to Southern Suburbs. The donated players from Old Collegians were rotated at half time. This made for an entertaining and interesting game that followed.

We had two new players in the squad today, Jock Dunn and Clayton Dawson. Both had plenty of game time and both looked like they were enjoying the experience. The first half was evenly matched - the score at half time being 12 to 10 Old Collegians way. Tries were scored by, Alecia and Dakota for Old Collegians. Dakota was also seen to make a scything tackle on Carl who was himself performing a deft curly run towards the try line. Jayden and Carl scored for Southern Suburbs in this half. Clayton Dawson was seen spinning out of the forward ruck and weaving past the Old Collegians trying to stop him. It was during the first half that Angus Porter was injured and came off.

The second half was less evenly matched with (the newly configured) Old Collegian side scoring 6 tries to Souths 1. Alecia had some tremendous runs to score 3 tries. Jayden scored 2 and Meg scored 1. This uneven score was due in part to the Collegian players getting up a good head of steam before anybody could tackle them. On the back line I watched Ethan Hickman perform a great dodge and run past a group of opposition players.

Overall, I thought the sharing of players and the game play in general were an excellent example of good sportsmanship and rugby at its best.

What a great morning of rugby.

18 players arrived for our second game against Southern Suburbs this season. A fantastic team effort with some incredible tackling; great recovery of the loose ball and some blinding running. Most importantly today, awesome team play and support. We are really starting to gel as an awesome pack of players.

Player of the match was awarded to James List with another stand out performance.

The tackling trophy went to Max Gordon for some much improved tackling

Olins Watters was awarded most improved performance with some great runs and understanding of the game in only his first few games.

Well done u10s. See you all at practice.

For the second time in 2 weeks we played Southern Suburbs. They managed to field 7 players to our 16, so 3 of our team kindly offered to play for them in each half. Playing 10 a side caused some challenges on a small pitch with a fair amount of loitering going on. To the repeated calls of "spread out, you're not at a picnic" from our passionate coach on the field, Old Collegians U8s eventually began to find some shape in attack and defence.

There were some excellent runs from all the team, and Mawson, Salvi and Tyson impressed once again with their tackling. We are still too often trying to strip the opposition of the ball so we can run in and score. Yes, this works against a small opponent, but it will not work as the players move up throughout the grades and the opposition increase in size.

On Wednesdays we practice, and are getting the hang of tackling and then getting to our feet to play the ball. The coaches will keep working on getting the players to transfer these skills to the game situation, as we are too often taking the easy option rather than making the tackle.

Our clean out is improving, with most of the team unselfishly committing to doing this very important part of the game to free their ball up for their team mates. Salvi, Eddie, William, Sasha and Joey impressed in this regard once again. The coaches will continue to work on this in training- "first 2 clean out" is the mantra to remember.

It was another successful day on the scoreboard, and the coaches will continue to keep encouraging the Old Collegians U8 to work as a team.

A strong turnout of 23 kids turned up for the back to back Southern Suburbs game this week at Clarence Park. Southern Suburbs had a full side which was great to see and conditions on the pitch were perfect.

A lot of work to get the kids heading in the right direction, though this is improving with each week. This certainly helps the skills of the older players who trained last year stand out even more and provides a good example for the little ones though some of them are advancing into tags that resemble tackles pretty closely!

Trophy for player of the week went to Jack George who showed some great play, scoring a try in the first round against Southern Suburbs and getting a few good long runs in, Azalie, Alex and Angus showed great form with a few runs and even some passing to team mates - something the coaches are just starting to get the kids to get their heads around.

Certificates of encouragement to Zack Czeglik, Toby Wilson, Rhyce McCarthy and Oscar Angove who showed their skill and improvement in understanding of the game and in particular listening to their coaches.

Despite listening being on the top of the coaches' list for improvement - each week we continue to be pleased with the behaviour of the kids towards their team mates and their opposing team. We have a great group of parents this year who are fantastic at setting a good example for the kids by cheering as loudly for the opposing side as they do for our Old Collegians side.

Tries from Joe Lohse, Jack George, Hamish Kerr Grant, Will Tanner, James Hicks and two from Daniel Boulden resulted in a win overall against Southern Suburbs ('round-robin' in thirds again this week due to our numbers).

Old Collegians v Southern Suburbs

Southern suburbs fielded a formidable team with a big squad to test Old Collegians' resolve in this the second game of the season. With a depleted squad as a result of injuries, a number of players had to play out of position. Of these special mention must go to Campbell and Arwin, who volunteered to play second row, despite their concerns that any facial rearrangement or swollen ears might render them ostracised by the dancing, pretty boy Backs! Campbell "it wasn't me guv" spent 8.5 mins lounging on the sideline as he contemplated the confusing issue of offside. However with referees making a point of cleaning up offside, you MUST have stable footing, enter "The Gatec and look up, drive upwards entering the ruck. Again, this week we gave away far too many penalties and need to address this to be successful in tight games. I don't want to hurl anyone onto a pedestal as everyone had a fine performance with Adam moving away from the front row and enjoying the freedom from neck pain at flanker. Patrick had another great game at scrum half with some great tackling close to the gain line. Body position and protecting the ruck needs further work as the opposition rolled very effectively over the try line three times. We were caught not able to stem the tide under our posts and more communication from everyone is required to stop this.

The game was very tight - nearly to half time, as points were traded to keep scores level. Then dominance in the scrum, fine tackling and confident back movement led to a brace of tries to take us comfortably ahead to the half time whistle. Well done Ben for great conversion kicking as well as number of tries. Notable moments include watching our powerful front row (do you remember Pontypool?) dominating, life on line Captain Ollie (when told to use his head did so and put in the way of a boot) had to come off and Nick (disclaimer he is my son) for try saving tackle. Tries flowed in the second half once we learnt to catch the ball form kick off and running rugby ensued. Nearly there boys but discipline at breakdown, good running angles and complete commitment for support and you will only get better. Brad top scorer with three this week, Harry 1, Ben 2, Arwin 1( from lock), Magnus (1). Brad is now being moved to winger as a result

Old Collegians 29 v Souths 29

Unfortunately I missed the first 30 minutes of the game this Saturday however upon my arrival it was fantastic to see that Old Collegians were up 10 points against Souths. From the outset of the second half the Souths side appeared to have lifted their game matching the play of the Old Collegians' boys. Both sides were evenly matched, yet even with some excellent defense from the backs and some great gains from the forwards; Souths managed to even the score in the closing minutes of the gamed. George Hewitt and Seaton Siegfried made tries each and a try each to Lefatu Egglestone and Hugh Heidenrick in only his second game of rugby. George Hewitt was able to converted two of the tries albeit was extremely close with two other attempts hitting the post twice from quite difficult angles.

Next week the boys will have an opportunity to utilise the knowledge gained from Saturdays game to take to Souths this coming Saturday as it has been programmed for a back to back games.

Old Collegians v Burnside

The game was tightly contested, the teams more closely matched than the final score would indicate. The first half was characterised by an inability to win the loose rucks and scrums. This in turn meant that the back line was not fully utilised. There were some notable pieces of individual play; however, this was not enough to overcome the stronger and better organised Burnside forwards. Additionally much of the success of Burnside could be attributed to the charges of the forwards. They were held somewhat in check by lots of very good tackling by Old Collegians The second half was more successful in terms of team play. We won the first four loose rucks, evened up the score and won (almost) all the scrums in the second half. Alecia Pienaal also scored with one of her now characteristic 50 meter runs through the pack and down the pitch. There is little doubt that with a unified forward pack and greater use of our back line, Old Collegians will find success.

Old Collegians v Southern Suburbs

Well the U10s had their first full pitch game for the season against Southern Suburbs and safe to say they were very excited!! It was a good test of our teamwork skills and fitness so early in the season. Thanks to some great prep work at training we were able to hold our own and control the game, our winning streak continues! There were too many standout performances to mention all by name, but the second year U10s are really starting to play well. Congratulations to all players for giving it their all, the management team are very proud! With some further teamwork training I am confident that it will be another great season for them. Russel Gordon did a standout job of subbing on the day, as we endeavour to give fair play time to all given the large numbers on the team. Only one Trophy was present on the day and went to Mitchell Pratt for his consistent and great teamwork play on the day which is crucial when playing a full pitch.

Looking forward to the rest of the season and it was great that the majority of the team could stay behind and cheer on the U12s and get the club spirit happening!

Old Collegians v Southern Suburbs

The OC U8s fronted Souths on the weekend - a very different Souths to the drilled, aggressive team that we faced off against a number of times last season, a team that became renown for the "lawnmower" play (I never quite worked out what it was). This Souths team turned up with 5 players. Showing good spirit and sportsmanship, a number of our players volunteered to put on the opposition jersey and played hard and made a game of it which was pleasing to see.

The U8s continued their good form of recent weeks by trying to control the rucks by disciplined cleaning out and retaining possession, running the ball and tackling hard which culminated in some excellent team tries. Whilst it was impossible to nominate a best player given everyone contributed we'd like to single William, Sasha, Eddie and Tyson for their commitment to cleaning out the opposing team at the breakdowns as well as Finlay for his awareness around the packs, entering the contest from the correct side each time.

That nemesis of even the most accomplished rugby teams, tackling, remains work in progress for the U8s. Our players are too often trying to strip the ball from the opposition hands rather than making the tackle and bringing the support players into game. That said, there is no shortage of players committing themselves each week to trying to make tackles and often against larger players. Salvatore, Mawson and Tyson were notable for their tackling aggression with Tyson showing his improved understanding of the rules when a number of times after making the tackle he jumped to his feet to play the ball.

We ran the ball well at times and Joey, Jack and Jackson provided some superb efforts running hard at the opposition lines. There were a number of try scorers on the day but congratulations to Sasha who ran in her first try.

Old Collegians v Southern Suburbs

Twenty four kids turned up this week for the U7s second match of the season against Southern Suburbs at home. We played thirds again due to the huge numbers of the Old Collegians U7 side. Strong play and improvements from Jemima Collins as she got some great runs in and shared the ball making her a worthy player of the week. Dan Bouldne and Alex Punshon both showed strong offensive play with some nifty side steps and big runs. Dan volunteered to play for Sourthern Suburbs to make up the numbers for the other side helping them out with some excellent defensive play. Jack Taylor showed promise with two tries and multiple runs.

Good to see the kids loving playing the game even when they are playing each other in a side scratch match. All kids are doing a great job and learning the game including sharing the ball around and listening to their coaches.

1st Grade Match Report

Old Collegians 73 v Woodville 12

Tries: Gary Mann, Chris Bartlett (2), Jason Hyam, Paddy Macklin (2), Delano Leen (3), Will Sadler (2)

Conversions: Will Sadler (9)

Best Players: Chris Bartlett, Gary Mann, Paddy Macklin

Old Colls consistently face a strong physical opposition in Woodville and, though the final score line may not necessarily reflect that in this game, it was certainly the case as Woodville came out looking to dominate our pack up front and stifle the possession of our backs. The first 10 minutes saw an even competition as both sides contested hard in the rucks and tackles, until Woodville struck first, breaking through a tackle from 30m out and finishing with genuine pace. The rest of the first half; however, had the majority of traffic going in the other direction, as our forwards muscled up to create a stable platform for our backs to test Woodville out wide.

Delano Leen was hungry in support and finished off 2 tries in quick succession, firstly after Bartlett had run from half way down his wing and popped a pass inside to Leen to beat the last defender. From the restart Macklin weaved through the defence and linked up with Cross and he in turn found Delano who again dived over. Bartlett continually proved a handful for the Woodville back 3 and soon after once more evaded defenders down his wing and passed off his shoulder to Sadler who scored. Frustration was evident for Woodville and they conceded a yellow card for cynical play in their 22. A quick tap and a couple of phases in the forwards created enough momentum and space for Mann to barge his way over for the bonus point try

Woodville changed tactics and kicked long off the restart with a quick chase to reapply the pressure. Old Colls remained calm and recycled the ball in the forwards for several phases to settle proceedings, until Perdana broke through on a hit up from the 22, and the Woodville defence was not able to react quickly enough before the ball was transferred wide to Chips who ran 70m to score. The forwards withstood the pressure on the restart to hold possession, and as they drove back to the halfway there was time for one more try as Leen fought his way over the line in the corner

The second half was a chance for Old Colls to focus on skills and strength in implementing their game plan to build phases and maintain a disciplined attack. We spent the first 10 minutes predominantly in our own half, even though we had most of the ball, without a score to either side. Denly at half back and Smedley at 5/8 were dictating the terms of attack and after several creeping phases in the forwards they found space for Bartlett coming in off the wing, who linked up with Sadler out wide for the first try. From a scrum in our own 22 Smedley jauntily ran to just short of the gain line to suck in 2 defenders and created a hole that was seized on by Sadler coming through from full back. He made considerable ground on the burst and committed the last defender before Chips polished off the break out with a try

The game opened up again for the final quarter and Leen took advantage of another wide ball to score his third try of the day. Macklin too showed his strength as Woodville went on the attack, when he ripped the ball off his opposing man and spun away to score from half way. Woodville maintained the fight, towards the end of the game clawing back a second try from 40m out with impressive pace and chased hard by Jason, but Old Colls had the final reply as Jason went over to score and complete a resounding win

2nd Grade Match Report

Old Collegians 33 v Burnside 28

The 2nd grade faced a big challenge against Burnside this week, and was looking forward to a big day against our old foes.

After absorbing some early pressure in the first 5 minutes we managed to secure some possession and get on the front foot. Once we got a bit of momentum there was no stopping us. An aggressive and hungry pack drove us forward continually and an extremely potent backline feasted on plenty of quick ball.

The first half proved bountiful as we ran in 4 tries and firmly planted our foot on Burnsides throat. At the break it was 26-0 and we were looking ominous. However, the break seemed to rob us of our focus and patience. Five minutes in, both sides receive a red card and we didn't react well to the new situation. Burnside; however, clicked into gear and started to build a fight-back. Three unanswered tries had us rattled and in need of a bit of clear thinking. We seemed unable to stem a torrent of penalties and our fitness is waning. Poor decisions were costing us as Burnside grew in confidence. A well constructed try gave us breathing space but Burnside continue to push hard, scoring again to pull within 5 in the dying minutes.

A lift in effort kept them at bay until the final whistle and we were winners 33-28.

A magnificent first half showed just how well we play. A poor second half showed how easy it is to fall short.

All in all, a victory over our biggest rival is sweet indeed, and the glimpse of our full potential is very heartening.

3rd Grade Match Report

Old Collegians 28 v Woodville 17

It was a Saturday when pride in Rugby took over, to arrive at an away venue and see red & blue everywhere was just outstanding. After watching numerous junior games from 7s to 16s plus the womens team it was the 3rd Grade turn to contribute to this wonderful Rugby day. Thursday night was very hard for us with each phone call the team numbers kept diminishing and at last count some 20 players not available for injury or other reasons. At one stage we were down to 13 starters - a tough call. Ian Walker worked his usual magic and on the day we had 2 reserves, a fantastic response by all.

The game panned out to plan with Woodville having very large forwards who tried to intimidate our lighter pack but with speed & fitness on our side we managed to run the ball at every opportunity. Once again Chester controlled the back line to perfection with his outstanding distribution kicking and tackling. The contribution of Blake, McClay, Chester and mystery half-back had to be seen to be believed with all 4 scoring tries. One being a great team effort with Allport handling twice in the movement. A special mention to the front row combinations of Britcher, Porteous, Eilers and of course David who outplayed the larger Woodville forwards in every scrum, a credit to skill and desire. The final score of 28-17 to Old Collegians was outstanding in the circumstances. Well Played All!

Womens Match Report

Old Collegians 47 v Woodville 5

Tries: D'Arcy Sadler (3), McKenzie Sadler (2), Bec Jones (1), Georgia Morris (1)

Best Players: Kristy Hume, Bec Jones, and Katie Reynolds.

In a game which had special meaning for the team after last years finals rounds, in its second outing for the season, another spirited and determined victory was earned by a big team effort. This was particularly so in circumstances where we were missing a number of players and only had 12 on the field, and in circumstances where full 35 minute halves were played with no subs.

The beginning of the game was tight and saw aggressive offence by Woodville until the 13th minute when we scored our first try followed by 3 others in quick succession. On field discipline was much better with far fewer penalties being conceded - with the fine example of the captain Luisa "I promise I won't get a card this time" Raikiwasa who again put in big runs breaking the advantage line and setting up other players. This was a game that also shifted, after being well up the team found itself under a lot of pressure at the end of the first half and was able to go the break with Woodville still not scoring even after rugged attacks by them with our team defending the try line. The first half also saw one of our new women Bec Jones score her first try under the post with the usual accuracy of Sian Beaves converting it. Sian also put in a cracker in her first game as scrum half instead of her normal position at full back.

The second half was a pretty rugged affair with the physical aggression increasing. Nat "I love the contact" Vemoa as our number 4 was relentless. The half was messier with some momentum being lost as a result of an injury to a Woodville player who had to be carried off by stretcher. Eventually Woodville scored its only try.

A big effort was put in this second half by the front row and in particular Kristy Hume - a warm day with no subs meant it was not an easy day for the props. Callum Moran and Rob Smedley helped with water and the kicking tee which was used by Sian Beaves on 7 occasions with 6 conversions. Another great effort.

After two wins we have scored 96 points with only 12 against.

Under 16s Match Report

Old Collegians 83 v Vikings 0

It was a beautiful sunny day to start the junior rounds of the rugby season. The Vikings had performed well at the Gala day and with some of their top players not available for the Gala day due for return, the team didn't take their preparations lightly. Many thanks to Nigel and Robbie as well as the warm up guru "Flexi Stewy", for directing the boys to start the game in top gear. Vikings came hard at the team with excellent attacking and clearly their players are very talented. However with such a powerful OC backline and motivated cohesive forwards the pressure was too much and slick running from every angle produced a steady stream of tries. Congrats to Ben as Captain with 2 tries and 8 conversions, Rory (3), Magnus (1), Brad(1), Kees (2), Marcel (1), Patrick (his first for OC), Doug (1), Nick (1 conversion). A special mention has to go to Adam Thompson for a fantastic full game at hooker, with some excellent tackling and ball carrying- a tough gig for anyone. Thank you to Campbell for playing for the opposition for the last part of the game and bad luck for Kees, twisted ankle, but also to Matt Green is out for the season with a major knee ligament injury. The most impressive part was the close support play that allowed such excellent running rugby.

Under 14s Match Report

Old Collegians 12 v Vikings 50

This was the first encounter for the current generation of the Old Collegians' U14s squad in the full game format rather than that of the previous 3 Gala Days.? The game started out as a fitting opener with the western suburbs Vikings showing some formidable rugby. The Vikings had a rather heavy front row yet the lighter Old Collegians were able to win the scrum on their feeds.

There was some great pressure play from the boys in their first game together with some fierce tackling and determined pushing forward against some greater odds. Several players took some knocks that left them out for the remainder of the game. ?This years squad has a few first time players to Old Collegians and a couple to rugby itself. The game against the Vikings has shown some new talent within the squad which can be developed over the coming season. ?The Vikings held the Old Collegians' score to 2 tries. A try each to Edwin and Seaton and a masterful conversion of Edwins try by George.

Under 10s Match Report

Old Collegians v Woodville

Coaches/Managers awards: Lucas Aguir and Allistar Tanner.

The first proper game for the season was always going to be an exciting one for the U10s. With a mix of second season U10s, first timers and new players to the club we were keen to test ourselves.

Some great rugby was played on the day, no doubt, due to the keenness of the players and the fact that almost all had played every gala day!

The team worked very well together and some excellent tries were made, fantastic tackling of some larger players was also noted.

Coach Craig Barlow was heard to say the team played their best game of the season to date!!

Under 8s Match Report

After 3 weeks of Gala Days, the U8s group were eager to take the pitch for a "points" game. With 17 players, we were pleased to able field two teams - Blue and Red (who would have thought?) - who each played a half against Woodville and Ports. With the early start and plentiful space, we even managed to pit the Blue and Red teams against one another for a third game.

Overall the coaches were pleased with the efforts of all our players over each of the games. It should be said upfront that we are far less interested in winning every game (though winning is always nicer option of the two) than we are the kids executing the basic elements of good rugby such as tackling, structure at the breakdown and passing. With the Gala Days providing an abundance of game time for our players, it is pleasing that so early in the season the U8s are progressing with the basics being practiced at training.

Woodville continue to turn out a disciplined U8 rugby team who always provide stiff competition and Saturday was no exception. Ports were a little less a force, fielding a small side. Our second year players such as Tyson, Ivan, Salvatore and Jackson stepped up when need in their respective teams. Our first year players including Joseph, Eddie and Noah among many others had great games. The net result is that we ran in more tries than our opponents and more importantly, showed some glimpses of good rugby.

The group has much work to do in the areas of tackling and structure (staying in our lines, positioning) and rucking - which will continue to be the focus at training. We look forward to a tough game against Souths at home this coming weekend.

Under 7s Match Report

Old Collegians (Blue and Red) 4 vs Woodville 3

Tries: Will Tanner, Daniel Boulden, Jack Taylor, Joe Lohse

Player of the week: Joe Lohse

Strong player awards: Quillien Bleakley, Toby Wilson, Will Tanner

Result: Old Colls (Blue and Red) def Woodville 4-3

The under 7s kicked off the 2015 season with huge numbers; over 23 kids coming along for the first season game at Woodville following three successful gala days.

The teams elected to play a round-robin of 3 teams including Woodville to ensure all the kids got some decent pitch time.

Strong play from some of the more experienced kids showing good hands and some tricky footwork.

Great work from some of the new kids learning the game for the first time and the start of some promising play from a number of players.

This lead the combined Old Collegians' Blue and Red team/s to defeat the Woodville team, though no surprise, given we had 23 fresh players!

Best player of the day was Joe Lohse who played a strong attacking offensive game.

Great play from others including Will Tanner and Quillien Bleakley who were first to volunteer to make up the numbers for Woodville with Will scoring 2 of their 3 tries! Great sharing of the ball and defensive play from Toby Wilson. Two tries from Daniel Boulden (incredible side step) and one each from Jack Taylor and Joe Lohse came to a total of 4 tries for Old Collegians.

Great to see the 23 kids (all aged between 5-6 years old) learning to play as a team and improving in skills, all while having a great time out on the pitch.

Sunday 26th April

1st Grade Match Report

Old Collegians 28 v Burnside 12

Tries: Gary Mann, Chris Bartlett, George Eddell

Conversions: Will Sadler (4)

Best Players: Paddy Macklin, Gary Mann, the tight 5 (Dawes, Nutt, Perdana, Power and Campion)

This grand final rematch was hard fought for the full 80 minutes, with both sides looking to establish themselves as the form team of the competition. Old Collegians were keen to regain their edge over Burnside, against whom we were unbeaten in 2014, but to whom we lost the pre-season Barter Card cup final earlier this year. Burnside were undeniably strong in their scrum but our pack remained competitive in the set piece and ultimately the combination of our forwards' aggression at the ruck, unyielding defence across the field and versatility of our backs enabled us to make more of our opportunities. This was the basis for a solid 4 try to 2 win.

Each team tested the other early with play ranging back and forth across the field for the first 20 minutes without a score. Eventually Old Collegians pushed into the Burnside 22, taking territory and probing the defence over several phases of hit-ups and rucking, before Smedley sucked in 2 defenders on the gain line and slipped a short pass to Bartlett who was not going to be stopped from 15m out.

In reply Burnside played conservatively, stifling Old Collegians of possession and making minor ground gains before being sent back 50m to try again after a turnover from Macklin allowed Mann and McDonough to link up on the wing and run it out, stopped only by some desperate defence at the other end of the field. On the back of their scrum Burnside were able to get back into our 22 and after 10 minutes of battering our line they finally forced their way over to score. Shortly after the restart Burnside cleared long but did not find touch and were punished as some smooth open field support play put Old Collegians back on the attack, with Mann and Sadler each making metres, finding George Eddell who was able to deftly step the last 15m to the line. Gary Mann, Chris Bartlett, George Eddell Will Sadler (4)

Burnside attacked early in the second half but were quickly rrepelled back to half way. Old Colls capitalised on a break and strong carry by Perdana, who made yards before offloading to Bartlett down the wing and who in turn found Smedley inside to finish off with a try. The battle up front continued and both sides found opportunities in counter-attack. Burnside seized on a dropped pass midfield to run 60m against the flow of play and reduce the gap to 9. Notwithstanding this lapse, Old Collegians were able to get the game back under control with well set but adaptive defence, and the frustration of Burnside wore through as they conceded 2 yellow cards in the last 15 minutes.

The final say developed from a penalty on half way, where Smedley broke through with Macklin and Mann in tow, and Mann put the win beyond doubt with the final converted try.

U18 Match Report

Old Collegians 29 v Burnside 17

Our first game of the season, played at home in front of a large Anzac Sunday crowd, could have been a bit daunting for the lads but they played with a great deal of calmness and authority. Burnside took one look at our back line-up and immediately decided to kick at every opportunity. In the first ten minutes we defended very well and broke well when in possession. Our first try arose from a skillful bit of work from Sebastian Richardson who brilliantly kept the ball in play and then passed the ball inside to a supporting player who slipped it to Charlie Pickford, who then crashed over the Burnside line. Not long after the restart Charlie Pickford went down in the middle of the park clutching his knee. After Doc Wonders examination he was carried off the pitch and taken to hospital. This spurred the lads on and they applied more attacking pressure. After a flowing move, which saw the lads pass the ball from wing to wing, Nick Litchfield saw a gap five metres out and sliced through to score a very good try. Kaleb Joppich took over the goal kicking duties and converted beautifully. The score was now 12-0. Just before half time our super sub Rory Illman finished off another flowing move at great pace. Another conversion from Kaleb had the half time score at 19-0. The first ten minutes of the second half saw good defence from both sides until Harry Warner picked up from a ruck five metres out and crashed over the line for a great try. Conversion missed leaving the score 24-0. At this point of the game we decided to give the bench subs a run. Of the seven subs on the bench, we had already used 4 and we put on the last 3 from the bench to ensure everyone in the squad got some game time. Burnside saw their opportunity and applied the pressure scoring three good tries and converting one of them. The score was now 24-17. We still had five minutes to play and the Burnside tails were up. Super coaches Suttell and Killick then played a master stroke and put on three of our original players thus stopping Burnside in their tracks. With two minutes to go our scrum half, Scott Gear, sold a brilliant dummy on the halfway line and skipped through the gap to race for the deciding try. The final score 29-17. I think the lads enjoyed the generous applause from the home crowd. After a break of 3 years Old Collegians' U18s are back and we have the makings of a very competitive squad of players. Well done to the whole squad and a great TEAM effort.

In the first game of the season the team put in a spirited, convincing and powerful win marred by a very high penalty count against us, Kim Evans breaking her nose and one yellow card shortly before full time.. In the first half we dominated play with a powerful scrimmaging performance with our pack overwhelming the opposition with good ball getting to our backs with long running tries scored by D'Arcy and McKenzie Saddler. Not to be outdone our forwards were in it as well with two powerful tries scored by our captain Luisa Raikiwisa whose off season fitness training was self evident. Sian Beavers was in fine form converting all the tries with 100 per cent accuracy. In the second half the game was messier with some of the advantage shifting to Burnside and them scoring a late converted try.
