Tenseness as firsts triumph

Old Collegians First XV triumphantly defeated University 14-8 last Saturday. Although not high class, this game was tense and exciting to watch.
The half time score was eight points all. University scored first with a penalty goal, but it was not long before Marsh accepted a pass from Barker, near the twenty-five yard line and scored a well placed try, providing an easy conversion for Barker. University, however, came back to add a further five points to their total.

False expectation

A false cry of delight from Collegians' supporters came when Marsh touched the ball down for another try, but it was disallowed because he must have put a foot into touch while running. However, McLachlan on the other wing scored a try a few moments later, thus tying the scores.
In the second half Collegians were at a disadvantage, as they were going towards the lowering sun, but still managed to hold off most of their adversary's attack. University, although doing their best, could not get through to score, which they vitally needed to do. Langridge scored a very good penalty goal from about thirty yards out from goal, and later Barker got an easy one right in front of goal.

Backs in form.

Throughout the game University won the majority of scrums and lineouts but lost it, countless times, through bad passing and mishandling by their backs. Best forwards for Collegians were John Northwood, Brian Rogers and Don Watkin. When Collegians did win the ball there were only a very few dropped passes and consequently the ball got through to the wing quickly. Tackling was about average. John Brown was the best back and in my mind the best afield. Keep it up! Keith Breusch and Bob Barker maintained form, but all the backs had their moment of glory.
As West Torrens are our next opponents, it is vital that they should be beaten, because it will put us in fifth place and within reach of the top four.

1st XV vs Woodville, A.F. Nielson Memorial Cup Final

From the Touchline

"Once again Old Collegians failed before the T.V. cameras, being downed 15-9 by Woodville in the final of the A.F. Nielson Memorial Cup competition.
The first half began reasonably well for Collegians when Adrian scored a penalty goal, and U thought they would go on to win this match easily, but this was not to be.   Woodville equalised the score with an easily scored try, and by half time were leading 9-3.
The second half went much the same with Woodville scoring a further 6 points, and Old Collegians a try and penalty goal.
Commenting on the game in general, I would say that the forwards were evenly matched in scrums and line-outs, but inspeed and backing up Woodville outclassed Collegians easily.   Breusch gave the backs many chances but was let down very badly. They were shocking, and with the exception of Marsh and McQualter lost almost every scoring chance.   Dropped passes were dominent by one or two people and cannot be excused.   Woodville's tackling was very good, which is more than can be said for Collegians.   Keith Breusch was certainly the best player for Collegians while Bruce McQualter and Ian Marsh were the best of the other backs. For the forwards Don Watkin and Evans played well, and Warren Bully turned in another good game.
In the next match Old Collegians meet University, and unless a drastic improvement is made, they will find it hard to win.

Lastly a word of congratulations to Sid Feldheim and the rest of the Thirds for defeating Elizabeth seconds. A fine effort."

The lineup for that game was:

  • Bulley
  • Evans
  • Northwood
  • Watkin
  • Robertson
  • Langridge
  • Mort
  • Burgess
  • Breusch
  • Bartlett
  • Brown
  • Adrian

1st XV vs Edinburgh

From the Touchline

Playing a strong Edinburgh team, Old Collegians were beaten 14-6 in what seemed to be a well fought game last Saturday (12th May). In the opening minutes of the first half, Edinburgh made a good start when they scored from a penalty and managed to keep this three point lead throughout this period. Failure to make good use of Breusch's kicks from ½ backs may have prevented Collegians from leading at half time.

For the first part of the 2nd half Adrian led Collegians into the attack and for the most part kept Edinburgh outclassed. Although a try was given away by Collegians, Adrian opened up the game by getting the ball, out-running two opponents and scoring a try for Collegians, which he subsequently converted.

Edinburgh now led by only one point and collapsed to allow 3 penalties to be awarded against them, only 1 of which Adrian managed to do any good with though.   Collegians were now in a math winning position with a lead of 2 points and only had to play for time, but Edinburgh were awarded a penalty and the tables began to turn.

After Edinburgh had scored these 3 points bad positioning of one or two of the Collegians' forwards allowed Edinburgh to score another quick try and conversion to sew up the game.

Old Collegians showed a general marked improvement on their previous match. Their passing and tackling was almost as good as it was when Glenelg were beaten a fortnight before. My place of honour this week goes to Lyn Adrian, who was not only the best player last week, but who has done all the scoring for the last two matches. Barker and Breusch were the best of the other backs. Bartlett was good, although patchy.

The best of the forwards, who in general far too slow, were Mort and Robertson.

To have any hope of being in the top six at the end of June, Collegians will have to win at least two of their next three matches. What about it?

The lineup for that game was:

  • Northwood
  • Evans
  • Langridge
  • Mort
  • Robertson
  • Wilson
  • Watkin
  • Burgess
  • Breusch
  • Bartlett
  • Brown
  • B.Rogers
  • Barker
  • Adrian
  • McQualter
