VETERAN'S DAY: 30TH APRIL

The gods may be crazy but they must be elderly, too, for while the lads sweated it out on the pitch, the Oldies basked in 24 degrees of Indian Summer. They refreshed themselves from Dot Roger's and Lilian Holdich's tea tent with tea and scones sold at pre-Whitlam if not pre-war prices or sipped the 'occasional' beer at rather more current prices.

They were all there from the wee nippers in prams to the youngest club member playing senior rugby (David Wortmeyer, aged 17, in the 2nds) to Founder Member and Patron, Colin Runge. Faces in the crowd included Jack Hastwell and Gordon Allen from pre-war days, David Rogers, one of two life members of the referee's association, Rod Essery long serving member Edward Suttell, Bob Burgess of 1000 games, Neil Franks, Ken 'Crasher' May, Jenny Feldheim, Tony Matthews of the Feathers and others - including 8 out of 9 life members. It was a little hard to keep track of everyone so apologies to anyone I failed to mention.

The evening was good as well with Pat Klynsmith, Margaret Paterson and Barbara Finn producing a meal - shepherd's pie and curry served with (I'm told) authentic incinerated Australian ants. The culinary effort was obviously appreciated judging by the number of empty 'reds' that were left. A lot of people stayed on until late and what did Mike Shine get up to.... ?

About 30 people made it back on Sunday evening but only after the Working Bee when the kitchen was re-painted by (amongst others) Barbara and Mickey Finn, Patrick Torrens, Hugo Klynsmith, Jill and Peter Allen.

By the way, Dirk Klynsmith arrived a day early from Queensland. Dirk played some games for the Club a few years ago and although Hugo wants his son to play 4ths, I'm tipping he's going to be pushing for a spot much higher up.

Cheers, Danjo

Congratulations to Jeremy and Chris Allport on the arrival of a son, Simon David Kenneth ? third time lucky.

Mother's Day saw Jane Cushing breaking two standing records - she got out of bed before noon AND she had lunch.

While on the Cushing family - happy birthday Emma! Other Mother's Day events included Paul Vershaw's novel solution to the problem of no bath towels being available - ask Barbara Finn.

21st March 1988 Tregenza Times

Can't resist this one - John Brown and Howard Clay recently hosted a joint birthday party for their wives. The effort put into the party was too much for John who tactfully withdrew to his bedroom long before his guests could reasonably be expected to depart. In order to prevent Howard from dragging him back to the party, John locked the bedroom door which was a great idea until Julia was ready to go to bed. Latest reports indicate that John is still very much in the doghouse!

5th March 1988 Tregenza Times

Guy and Robyn Lithgow and Paul and Dawn Warren recently became proud parents. Congratulations! Glad to know that both offspring were equipped to play rugby.
