Grand Final

Grand finals this Saturday!

Come to Bailey and cheer the Cocks and the Crocs to victory!

Old Colls 4th Grade GF at 9.00am
Old Colls 3rd Grade GF at 12.00 noon

Also, the Women's Rugby GF is at 10.30am, Division 2 at 1.30pm and Division 1 (Brighton v Souths) at 3.40pm.

PARKING
SARU have advised that Mitcham Council will most likely not permit cars to park on Number 2 ground at Bailey Reserve on Saturday due to the inclement weather that we have experienced during the past week.

Alternative arrangements have been made with the Cumberland Soccer Club to park cars around their pitch from 11.00 a.m.should we be unable to use Number 2 ground. They will be charging $4.00 per car to use this area for parking.

The entrance to the Soccer Carpark is through Edith Street, Clarence Gardens.

Team Managers have already been given a car park pass and they should enter Bailey Reserve through the entrance off Aldershot Street (adjacent to the Bailey Sports Clubrooms) where a space will be reserved for them.

SARU realises this is late notice but have been hoping that the weather would have cleared up earlier than it has.

See you there, folks!

CRICKET
Are you wanting to maintain the links with the Club over the break? Do you love your cricket? Then why not play with the Old Colls Cricket Team during the summer break from Rugby.
We need at least 20 (preferably 25) interested bodies. Why so many? well that allows the club to field a team when many might be away on a particular weekend or you might have something else on for any given day; so it allows much more flexibility. That way we can cater for those potential Pontings, Lehmanns or Shane Warnes (forget the performance enhancing substances) who are fanatical about their cricket or those who just want a bit of a slash & hit on a Saturday Arvo! Please see Mick Renfrey, Jesse James or Hamish Crenna ASAP so we can organise the Team and sort out the

Shane Clark

Not content with breaking his leg, Shane Clark then loses his job. Well, in all fairness, with a broken leg it's going to be difficult to keep a job going. So, Muzza is organising:

Benefit for Shane Clark
Tregenza - after the home matches against Southern Suburbs
$20 buys you food and raffle tickets for a load of prizes.

For those who asked ... Shane didn't have any cover and as a casual, he lost his job.
And a good night it was ...

New Jerseys

New jerseys have been ordered for the 12's and the 16's, to be provided by the generous Mark Pickard and "Direct Interiors". Many thanks to him.

Try Rugby

"Try Rugby" is an initiative from the ARU to attract 5 to 12 year olds to rugby.
It is run in conjunction with the SARU Junior Development Officer Matt Nicholls who is visiting schools in the area.
It is being held at Old Collegians, Friday evenings for six weeks from Friday 28th February to Friday 4th April, from 5.30 pm - 6.30 pm.
The Club will open the bar and run the canteen and a sausage sizzle.

We recently had a presentation ceremony for the lads from 2002 who won the scholarships to Camp Waratah. They were given their jackets, and sent on their way with our congratulations.
We are looking forward to hearing about their trip.

Scholarships

Pictured here with Joyce Spry, the Junior Club's Patron, are Andrew Giles (U16), Sam O'Connell (U14) and Edward Lucas (U12). Henry Boylan (U16) was not available on the evening.

Beanies

There are beanies for sale at the club, embroidered with the club's logo. They have been hand knitted by the dozen by Anne Evans, Kim's mother. Clearly, obsessive-compulsive behaviour is a family trait. Our thanks to the generous Mrs Evans, who also donated a sizable sum of cash to the Frocs last year. A number of the beanies were recently stolen from Kim's car. Most of them were returned by a kind man who found them abandoned in his carport. However, at least a couple were kept by the thieves, who also made away with a couple of the new Frocs' shirts. If you should happen to see someone you don't recognise sporting a Frocs shirt or an OC beanie, please feel free to interrogate and/or attack as you see fit.

Charlie Sheppeard

Most recently playing for Collegians in the Seniors, Charlie Sheppeard, one of those having come up from the Juniors is off to England to do a semester or two at his father, Hugh's old University at Leeds.

James Diack

The Winter 2003 edition of the Department of Human Services' "Disability Matters", a quarterly journal about current issues and news to do with disability. This edition is 20 pages in length. It is edited by the Director of the Disability Services Office, David Caudrey, and contains a foreword from the Minister, Stephanie Keys.

The "Good News" section of the magazine contains a half-page article on James and the work he does as match reporter for Old Collegians. It uses the information about James on our website.

The magazine is distributed throughout Government and the non-government organisations making up the Disability sector.

Behaving badly

It's hard to get on a plane with scissors or pair of nail clippers these days. Funnily enough, it's as difficult to take things off planes as it is to take things on. With the tragedy of 11 September 2001 in mind, it is a federal offence to interfere with an aircraft. This includes, just for example, trying to pinch a seat belt.. Someone really should have warned the Falcons. The siren call of a shiny, tempting seatbelt has (allegedly allegedly allegedly) been the downfall of one Falcon/Old Collegian on his way home from playing in Rockhampton. Clearly, this interference with airline safety constitutes an act of terrorism. We sadly introduce the much reviled Osama Ben Hamer ...

... Tregenza Times July 2003

It's one thing to get in a brawl in one of Adelaide's evening venues but to be so indiscriminate as to not be looking at where one's punches are landing is unforgiveable when the last two left are our own boys exchanging blows.
... July 2003

Injuries

July 2003:
stewie Douglas' recurring shoulder problem has flared up again and looks like ruling him out for the rest of the season.
Sally Renfrey dislocated her collarbone at the sterno-clavicular joint and chipped the bone.
Ryan "Boo-boo" Neilson took a boot to the head in the first grade match against Port Adelaide on 14 June (the boot belonged to Ben Hamer and the cut on the head needed a staple). Boo Boo had to come off the pitch due to bleeding. When he retook the field he promptly broke his leg (Paul McFadden fell on it). Boo Boo will be out for the season. We have it on film, including the sound of the break.
... Tregenza Times July 2003

26th June: Shane Clarke broke his left leg during training when Tim Austin fell on him. It's a compound, spiral break that had some part of something sticking through his skin but Shane was calm throughout most of it - "might I suggest you give me that shot of painkillers now". Meanwhile Timmy keeps apologising when apologies have been long accepted and the 4th grade unanimously agreed to award Shane "Chook" for the foreseeable future.

Shane with Chook (prior to the accident) at the Falcons game against the Melbourne Axemen at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Starkie - broke his elbow at training in June.

Andrew Marshallsay

It's rarely been the Club's strongpoint to record who played what and when and how often other than intermittently when some new person tries to make up or the deficencies of the past and spends endless hours wriing up player's records. However, the photographs on the wall of the club give a hint of who has been playing the most matches.
Andrew Marshallsay, still playing, reckons about 550 matches which would exceed that of Bob Burgess at the time Bob's record made it to The Advertiser.

Tregenza Times

The Tregenza Times has always been read in far places as so many of our Collegians and ex-Collegians travel about the world. And with the newsletter now available electronically it can be read anywhere by anyone. But in some places, Collegians go to some difficult lengths to get a copy. Jeremy "Mad Dog" Allport has been spending a lot of his life in Africa these past few years (somewhere in Africa where it's remote) and gets his Tregenza Times specially delivered by diskette, copied by his company's people in the nearest city, (so any edition greater then 1.44Mb in size won't get to him) by jeep to the village he's living in. Jeremy reckons he tries to read no more than a page each day so it lasts longer. Where Jeremy's living, bald people are unknown so the kids there all crowd around waiting for him to take off his cap for them. He gets quite an audience.

Pool night

What a fantastic night! Firstly I want to say thank you so much to everyone who came along - your support means a huge amount not only to me, but more importantly to the club, and this has proven to me what we are capable of doing when we want to!
So pat yourselves on the back all!
For those of you that were unfortunate enough not to of been there (I'm sure there was a very good reason), the rules were quite simple - 2 tables, 24 doubles teams, and a knockout competition. To make things a little more interesting, however, there were a couple of rules:- no swearing, no drinking or smoking over the table, no cheating and most importantly no arguing with the judge (because the judge was myself).
Any of the above resulted in the offender having to cough up a gold coin for the fine-tin. Thanks very much to Tedgie who was paying in advance for his, and for mum Meara, who with her eagle eyes, collected quite a tidy sum.
The most profitable game was no surprise, however, when Boof and Jack came up against Hamish and Ray - the club thanks you for your contributions in this round. Though some games went a lot longer than others we eventually got to the grand final. This again saw the Ben and Jack combo come up against new comers John and Chris - and whilst a close game, the newies were just no match for the veterans, and $100 richer they were.
Whilst I am yet to speak to Curtis, I am more than confident that the bar-takings would have been more than healthy if the unhealthy heads I witnessed the next day are anything to go by (my own included)!
So again, thankyou thankyou thankyou brilliant people for making Cue'n'brew such a fantastic night!

Christian Tedge

It may sound unlikely, but it turns out that in a previous life our first grade captain, Christian Tedge, represented South Australia as a teenage roller-blader. There was lycra involved. Seriously. We leave your fertile imaginations to fill in the details. Subsequent to discovering these unknown depths to Tedgie, someone (who shall remain nameless) has taken liberties with a photo of Tedgie from the last edition of Tregenza Times and pinned it to the notice board in the club. It is reproduced to the left. SuperTedge!

Speaking of SuperTedge, both he and Ben Hamer won a slab of beer from Ted Apted recently by winning a bet that they couldn't kick the ball through the posts from behind the half way line. Oh, Ted - have ye no faith?

James Bradley

Congratulations to James Bradley for winning a University Blue in rugby!

Peter Forde

Peter Forde is leaving for Darwin. Consequently, he has invited the hordes to the Astor on the 16th of May from 6pm. In Peter's words: "Come down & celebrate, commiserate, reminisce, tell the truth or lie like hell. Just be there because you really care. Who am I kidding??? Just come for the free wine, beer and food."

World Cup Tickets

John Gaughan has two tickets to the opening ceremony he would like to sell
PH 4th May 2003

Hamish Cranna would like it known he wishes to buy one ticket to the final ... he has two already and wants one for Barry Nichol. You get no sympathy from me ...
PH 13th April 2003
Seems I completely misinterpreted what Hamish was saying. He told me late at the club when I was clearly engaged in doing something else. It has nothing at all to do with Hamish. It's Barry who wants the ticket. And at the original price, thank you.
PH 25th April 2003

Len Perkins

The Club mourns the sudden death of it's early founder in Len Perkins who rebuilt the club following the 1939-45 war. The funeral was held on Thursday 3rd April 2003.

Len Perkins, who rebuilt the Club after its recess during World War II, died suddenly at his home on Friday 28 March 2003. He was 77 years old.
Len was introduced to rugby by fellow life member David Rogers in 1944 when David played for West Torrens. At the end of his first season, Len set about rejuvenating the dormant Prince Alfred Old Collegians Rugby Club by rounding up former Australian Rules playing school friends.
Their standard was awful, but improved season by season as experienced players returned from the war. In 1948 Len captained a team which would have matched the standard of any premiership side since.
During his playing days Len was the first winner of the Rugby Union's Don Smith War Memorial Trophy in 1946, and went on to play for the state. Len had to leave South Australia in the 1950's for a lengthy training period at General Motors in Flint, Michigan, and later as a qualified engineer became the manager of vehicle assembly operations for South and Western Australia of General Motors Holden.
His two sons are well known to Old Collegians. Ben left the club to make his mark in Queensland's rugby community and is currently the kicking coach for the Wallabies. Jamie was a fast and determined winger who has given time as a club official. Len was a man of honour who set a high standard for the club.
He is survived by his wife Kathleen, his two sons and two daughters, to whom we extend our heartfelt condolences.

Get Stoned

The 60's night at the club, to promote Stones Ginger Beer, was a great success. Thanks to Emma Curran, the club's wonderful new Social Director, for her efforts. A number of the usual faithfuls donned wigs, beads and bad shirts in honour of the theme. Graham Raymond deserves a particular mention, for not only dressing up like a 60s pimp (complete with bad moustache) but also for going to the Mars Bar later that night in the same clothes. Dean Bradley showed up in a jacket that camouflaged well with the sofa (we hear it was his dad's ...). Bottles of Stones Ginger Beer (the Crocs' new sponsor) went down well and in great numbers. Like the Bundy promotion last year, everyone had good fun but no one is entirely clear on the details ...
... Tregenza Times April 2003

As most of those at the 60s Night hadn't been born until long after the 1960s had ended they would not have noticed the sometimes frightening combinations of different decades of clothes thrown together with some that came into being only in 2003 from the imaginations of costume-makers. And for those who lived in the 1960s, none of their old clothes would fit.

Henry and Victor Olonga

Henry Olonga is the very brave guy who, together with Andy Flower wore black arm-bands playing for Zimbabwe at Zimbabwe in the World Cup. Last week 5 of Mugabe's henchmen tried to extract Olonga from South Africa. Henry's brother, Victor, has captained the Zimbabwe Rugby team for the past 3 years.

Excerpt from an article in the Weekly Telegraph issue 609, London, by Paul Hayward

'.... if Olonga comes here from his hiding place in South Africa, from which seven of Mugabe's henchmen tried to snatch him last week. Mugabe's goons were in East London to see through the president's threat to have the first black cricketer to represent Zimbabwe tried for treason and probably executed. Olonga ... made his stand on the question of basic human rights. Olonga is in mortal danger as long as he remains within reach of Mugabe's death squads. .....
Flower is nicely set up with another year on the county circuit with Essex and his wife and children are already there. Olonga should be heading for a career as a classical singer.
At 26, Olonga was saying that there is more to life than a career in games: especially when the sport of which you are part lends succour to a regime that sent out uniformed thugs last week to beat and harass members of the Movement for Democratic Change.
Zimbabwe doubtless went off the radar of everyday consciousness the moment England effectively boycotted their World Cup match in Harare. His father, a medical practitioner in Bulawayo, warned him that he would be tried and probably executed if he returned from South Africa, to which he had taken "documents and a few valuables" as a precaution.
By that point, most of us would have had enough, but Olonga was ready to take on South Africa's ruling ANC ‑the party of Nelson Mandela - who have been less than trenchant in their criticisms of Mugabe's Zanu-PF. "You have to remember that the ANC and Zanu-PFare bedfellows. I'll only feel completely safe once I get to England," he said.
Bravery is defined many ways. One way to pin it down is to say that the truly courageous do things we cannot imagine doing ourselves.

Excerpt from an article in the Weekly Telegraph issue 609, London, by Brendan Gallagher

ZIMBABWE'S rugby captain, Victor Olonga, has pledged to give refuge to his younger brother Henry, who he says is frightened and in hiding in South Africa following his controversial protest. However. Victor says he will return to Bulawayo, where his father still lives, in May to continue developing rugby in his troubled country, regardless of the consequences.
Olonga senior also confirmed that his younger brother was not seeking political asylum, as has been widely reported, but was making a straightforward application for a work visa so he can seek employment in Britain.
Olonga, who has captained the Zimbabwe XV for three years, was speaking in Penzance where, for the last four seasons, he has played professionally for Penzance and Newlyn RFC. He believes the Cornish fishing port would be an ideal base for his brother to rebuild his life in the aftermath of his protest and the bungled attempt by Zimbabwean security forces to abduct him in South Africa.
"Henry is my brother, I love him, my home is his home," said Victor. "I am here for him. I admire his courage, strength and honesty, but I worry for him. I hope it is truly his stance and that others have not brought influence to bear. Henry is the one who is now suffering, frightened and suffering the consequences.
"Frankly, I don't agree with the wording of the statement that Henry and Flower issued talking about the death of democracy, but that is my personal view. Brothers often disagree, don't they?
"I will return to Zimbabwe on May 1, like I do every year. I'm captain of the Zimbabwe rugby team. If the leader of Zimbabwe rugby, on the field, gives up, what message does that send?"

Chook & College Cup

In lieu of last year's award of the yellow shirt, the winner this year is required to look after the club's mascot, Chook "Master Bates".
The first grade also have a mascot they take where-ever they go. They call it 'beer'. OCs presents the best player across all grades on a home game with the College Cup. Club members are then responsible to keep it filled.

28th June:
Shane - for breaking his leg

21st June:
Gary Fenner

14th June:
Tony 'Fridge' Mills - for being the best on the ground.

7th June:
Shane - because he did well but the referee stuffed up

31st May:

24th May:
Master Bates was awarded to Derek Crawford - for being best player on the day.
The winner of the College cup was Ryan "Boo Boo" Neilson. Not content to fill it with beer, his kind, kind friends experimented with vodka & orange, Bundy, crème de menthe and Baileys, looking for the right mix to push Boo Boo over the edge. In the end, it was the sparkling burgundy that did it.

17th May:
Chook to Ashley for multiple dummy spits at Jesse after Jesse, as referee, gave 7 consecutive penalties against him.

10th May:

3rd May:
Master Bates was awarded to Rob Sadler - for his inspirational play and coaching

26th April:

19th April:

12th April:
Brenn Sinnott takes his chicken related responsibilities seriously. He is pictured here water-skiing (sort of) with Chook.

5th April:
"New to OC's this year, and playing in the 4th's, Hugh Armstrong wasted no time seducing our mascot with a "Business" junket to a sunny QLD resort.
Master Bates, the "Cock" was snapped enjoying some pool time and and among other things it seems some bedroom shenanigans.
Well good luck to them, I wonder if Hugh is ready for the heartbreak because as we all know, Master Bates is a "Team Player" and will probably go home with someone else after the next match..." ... Bren Sinnott

With apologies for the truncated right side of the following - it's as I received it ...

What we take for granted

On Thursday 13th March an ambulance was called for one of Collegians neighbours who had collapsed on the side of the oval. From a distance he looked like a player who was recovering from the effects of a lack of fitness, like someone taking a breather. From those out on the oval, the assumption was that he was sleeping something off. When Curtis mentioned he'd been there since the clubhouse had been opened, Kate Denley realised we could have a problem. The ambulance was called and they were there when he stopped breathing, so were able to revive him. It was a close one for the young guy involved (28 years old) (I assume he's ok) and incidentally a close one for the club, if you could imagine the Advertiser the next day going on to their (footy) readers about this heartless rugby club with all the guys training around a dying man etc. So, even though the guy was out in the 'burbs, even though he was snoring (indicative of lots of things) and despite the clothes he was wearing doesn't mean you can make too many assumptions.

Casino

Collegians gained another dubious distinction recently by having two separate evictions from the casino on the same evening.
Andy Dalton was spotted by the bouncers finding considerable difficulty getting the coins into a pokie machine and was then thrown out on the strength of his jeans.
Elsewhere in the building Chezza & Ben were thrown out for, well, being Chezza & Ben I suppose, but probably for a violation of the dress-code at what is undoubtedly a great example in what to wear. Personally, I'd prefer jeans to white polyester shirts, but then the casino knows all about that. Ask Leo Schofield.
But as for getting past the big boys out front, there is apparently a back way into the casino.

Reports on Chinese New Year

On 1st February the Club welcomed in the Chinese New Year for the third year in a row. More than 100 Chinese lanterns decorated the club rooms, and Chinese movies played on the TV all night long. As before, we had a healthy spread of roughly 200 club members, players, friends and neighbours. Traditional Chinese food was provided by the wonderful chefs, who have for the last couple of years hosted Boofy's Yum Cha Recovery sessions on Sunday mornings. Despite catering for more than 100 meals, all food had been sold within 40 minutes. We are beginning to suspect the club has a case of locusts.
We were roundly abused by Chef Lau, who does not like to see people go hungry. Meanwhile, the Lion Dance stumbled and weaved through the club in a seemingly random path (a bit like Chezza) and delighted some children while terrifying others (a bit like Chezza).
The 15 minutes fireworks display, which blustery conditions nearly cancelled, was the highlight of the night. The club made a healthy profit over the bar, thanks largely to the merry appetites of our friends and neighbours, and we all greeted the Year of the Goat in grand style.
Thanks go to Kim Evans who has for the last three years organised and paid for the club's Chinese New Year Party.

Graham Raymond brought a most delightful friend of his from school. No, not a student. What are you thinking? No, his Chinese teacher. I am captivated. Talk of eating deep-fried scorpions and things-that-clatter-along-the-floor-at-night certainly makes me hungry. Meanwhile, I'd like to enroll at Loreto, if it's not too late for me.

Report on the Old Collegians Open

The Tanunda Golf Day was great fun. A BIG BIG thank you goes to John Denley for organising it, and congratulations for winning it!
There were 18 participants, all of whom enjoyed lunch, afternoon tea, drinks (and some golf) at the excellent value. The standard of golf was interesting.
One punter couldn't decide whether to play left or right handed. We are looking to make this an annual event for the first Sunday in February. You've got twelve months to improve that swing ...

Congratulations to Gordon Pickard who was recently given the Adelaide City Council's Citizen of the Year Award in recognition of his enormous contributions to charities and sporting groups across SA (Old Colls, included).
Those contributions exceed $2 million, not least of all including the donations made through Gordon's company, Fairmont Homes, towards the Telethon Lotteries.

Foxtel

Foxtel returns. Murray Curran has arranged for the resumption of Foxtel at the club during the 2003 season - plan to watch your Super 12s and RWC games there!

Jack Walton

Good to see a renewed Jack Walton back in the clubhouse for Chinese New Year. But for how long before the urge to return to France? Now Jack copped a lot of abuse from the likes of Chezza during that day's tour of the vineyards for expelling the wine. Over a beer that night, Jack was saying, well that's why I'm talking to you now and Chezza's not. And the reason for spitting out the wine is quite logical - swallowing numerous tastes of wine will ultimately take a toll on your sobriety. And why, Chezza, when you are drunk do you end up apologising to Emma?
But back to Jack - I am told that he falls in love with a French girl, she reckoned he could do with losing a few modest kilos so Jack does just that & after a daily regimen of a total 35km run and a 4½km swim will never play in the front row again.

Where are they?

Kevin Jones has gone to Austria (for good?) (why Austria?). Goughie is now in Melbourne as Musical Director of whatever mob he works for. Emma Suttell is still in Devon but what's with the rumour of Jon playing for Exeter? Bob/Beck has become an Aussie citizen.

Dawson returns

All those with memories of the 70s and all those who know that those from the 70s have the energy, stamina, intelligence, forebearance, physical strength, cognitive abilities and wit that the younger generation lack - Dawson will be in Adelaide and you are welcome to join the reunion at 8.00 pm at OC's on the 20th of February.

Maurie de Gioia

Another quiet one. Maurie is Richard "Dougie" de Gioia's father and well known to Junior parents. He's been instrumental (their words, not mine) in getting the new premises for the Asthma Foundation on 300 South Road off the ground, or on it in this case, in November 2002. The plaque on the wall commends a number of notables, Clipsal, Beaumont Tires and Maurie amongst others. Well done, Maurie.

Tim Austin

From The Advertiser, Saturday 7th December 2002:

Tim's a shining example of how to succeed

By NIGEL AUSTIN

TIM Austin believes strongly in the adage of "the harder I work the luckier I get".
This outlook has seen him transform the one man cleaning concern run for years by his father, Conor, into a business that boasts a $4.2 million turnover and employs 130 workers.

The rapid growth has been recognised with International Clean-ing Services named one of Australia's fastest growing companies in the annual BRW Magazine Fast 100 list.
Mr Austin expects it to retain that status for at least the next year with a rapidly growing list of major clients.

"I didn't just get lucky, I strategised my future through hard work," he said.
Mr Austin has about 500 dom-estic customers and also cleans the premises of about 120 commercial customers including the Radisson Hotel, Hyatt, Embassy, EDS, Detmold Packaging, Phil-mac, United Water, Thiess and Channel 7.

The hard work began when Mr Austin ran his father's business for four weeks while his father took a holiday about seven years ago. He quickly acquired a taste for it and admits to getting carried away with the thrill of responding to customer needs. Soon he had a mobile phone and rough filing system and a growing list of small clients.

"I saw a niche in cleaning people's homes when they moved out and I would do everything myself " he said. "As soon as I finished I'd go on to the next one and you could say I worked 20 hours a day, seven days a week for a good two years. "I wasn't getting a lot of sleep, but I just loved it because you can see the results straight away, which is quite rewarding."

As the business grew his reputation increased and the clients became progressively larger branching into major sectors including retail, hospitality, industrial and commercial.

Then he started expanding in Melbourne, winning the contract for the Grand Hyatt Hotel after 10 months of relationship building.
International Cleaning Services has 15 people working full time at the Grand Hyatt. "We've got the structure to handle the big end of town but we can also handle the smaller end," he said.

"Our work in the hospitality industry with major hotels has given us a good idea of the day-to-day service required in other sectors," he said.
"Customer service is the single most important factor in the success of the business. "We've got two senior customer service managers because I want to build a well thought of organisation. "

He is constantly talking to customers, checking that their needs are being met. Mr Austin expects to be employ-ing 230 to 250 people within the next 12 months.
He has expanded into Mel-bourne with a move to Sydney and Brisbane planned for the next two years and is also considering the food and medical industries.

"If we can duplicate our success here, I don't see why we can't succeed in those markets," Mr Austin said.

Please see Mick Renfrey, Jesse James or Hamish Cranna ASAP so we can organise the Team and sort out the affiliation thing with PAC.

Karaoke Night July 12th

Old Cols Sing It Loud!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KARAOKE NIGHT
July 12th 7:30pm (after the games at Burnside)

13th July 2003:
Just so we're all clear on this, I am as of last night, Belinda's agent. Is she good? She is good. We'll be missing the next few Saturday's football while Belinda plays out at the Wollongong RSL and Thirroul Leagues Clubs. I failed to get Hamish to sign up as it appears the Church still has a contract on him, which is a great pity to me.
Ben Suttell was another notable of the evening. After 9pm it became too incoherent for me.
Ben Suttell was heard to remark that he could visualise Hamish in a white navy uniform when Hamish was singing his duet with Belinda of "Love lifts you up where you belong", the theme from a popular cinema feature of the 1980s. Ben is a sick person.

Denzil turns 50

He may not look it but Denzil recently reached the fair age of 50 early in July and celebrated the occasion with small group of friends and hangers-on at St Peters on Sunday the 6th of July.

Eskimo Nell

This website has had a number of enquiries about Eskimo Nell lately and in all cases a copy as been sent by return e-mail. There's suddenly a return to poetry recitals in rugby clubs throughout the rugby-playing world or does this suggest a return to the moral values of generations past? It's certainly a question for Trevor Kenny, one of the few, in fact the only,, person I know who can recite all 64 stanzas, drink or sober.

Team Spirit

There is a 'team spirit' night for the 1sts and 2nds at the Astor on Wednesday 14th of May at 7pm-8pm, cheap drinks, $10 food & schooner.

Fordey's farewell

Fordey's farewell at the Astor was loud, busy and merry - like Fordey himself. Peter has moved to the NT, and the usual suspects gathered for a few "quiet" ales to see him off. Fordey will be sorely missed both on and off the pitch. No party is complete until someone is rushed to casualty. In this case it was our own Social Director, Emma Curran, who ended up with a broken wrist (or something like that). It seems she was dancing with Graham Raymond. He spun her energetically, but was distracted by Cam's engaging conversation and forgot to catch her as she spun back. The Crocs were due to play their fiercest rivals, Onkaparinga at Onkaparinga, the next day. One drunk at the shindig was busily predicting that with the amount of beer being quaffed the Crocs' lion-hearts would be playing mrowl when they should be playing RRROAR. (It loses something in prose.) In any event, with a pur or a growl they won, and we understand that they played particularly well. One mate described Fordey as playing "the game of his life". He was still drunk and in borrowed boots.

Congratulations to Ben Hamer who is off to Scotland for a few months to play some northern hemisphere rugby!
Also refer to: behaviour on tour; e-mail from Roman

Elysha Skipper's time with the Frocs was brief, but in her time she impressed us on and off the pitch and it was with regret we let her return to Canada. We still blame a number of young men around the club for refusing to marry her to keep her in the country. Her farewell at the club included all of the Frocs and also a number of the girls from other clubs with whom Elysha had played in the women's state team. See ya, Skip!
... Tregenza Times July 2003

The exodus of foreigners is not limited to Frocs. Kiwi Matt Capon (who told us gravely he can't eat carbohydrates after sex ...) and English lads Matt and Will (known affectionately as Mrs Mole) have all returned from whence they came. We thank them for their time on the pitch and at the bar, and hope they will visit us again. Matt Capon is unfortunate to have to abandon the Falcons halfway through their 2003 campaign.

The Secker's left us for New Zealand. You get a good job offer, you have to go. Tom is staying in Adelaide.

Peter Forde - off to Darwin. Good luck Peter. Peter was the long-time partner in business of Mike Flehr, whose son Ben has played up through our juniors, had a few year's break and will be back playing seniors this year. Welcome Ben.
I have to say at this point that Ben's twin David is/was a Brighton player. Same junior teams. Both out on the wing. It used to be amusing and interesting to watch.

Beck goes to New Zealand

In association with Derbyshire Lloyd Ventures, BECK. Productions presents

BOB'S BOARDSHORTS BASH

You may have all heard the nasty rumours that I am leaving these fair shores for the summer. Since I am going for a substantial amount of time (3 months) it is very important to me that we fit in one last drinking session . . . .

As you may have guessed by the title, I have a plan, to create world domination with board shorts (no I haven't been drinking, I'm like this when I'm sober too). Therefore it would be really cool if everyone could wear some boardies, however I will take bribes (particularly partial to alcoholic ones) and reasonable excuses as to them not being worn. Due to my sensational dress code I figured we would need a venue that would cope with this, the best I could come up with is the Ed in Mitcham - very good garden area (even a fountain). If anyone has other ideas feel free to tell me - this is as casual as the attire.

Now, I have my last exam on Friday 28th November, I fly out Saturday 29th November. I am sure the very understanding ex-Ansett workers won't mind if I haven't been to sleep or am not in the least bit sober. This means after I get home from my exam, pack for the summer and welcome Max and Greg back to their house, it will be drinking time. So Friday say 6pm onwards rock up to the Ed to make sure you are free of me for the summer, or if you actually feel like partaking in a nice tasty beverage with me, then come on down!

If anyone is keen on eating there, get back to me with numbers and a time that would best suit you by say, mid next week and I will sort it. I'm not really fussed - as a wise Evans once told me "eating is cheating Bob"

Now I will leave you with a quote I saw outside a north Adelaide flower shop today "reality is an illusion brought on by lack of alcohol"

Matched

Paul & Cheri McFadden

Gavin Pfister married Jo in Cape Town on the 7th of December 2002. A few photos follow. Courtesy of Emma Curran, who wasn't there but got the photos anyway.

Liz Dean of the Frocs got married on 24 November 2002, and is now, strictly speaking, Mrs Gabb. All we can say is that Martin Gabb is a brave, brave man. Liz was absolutely gorgeous. Martin had a new haircut. It was all good. Congratulations and best wishes to the happy couple.

Michael Nanai and Sharon

Congratulations to Michael Nanai and his fiancée Sharon, who are getting married on 1st Nov. They would like to invite any interested club-members to pop in for a drink on the day. They're getting married about 12 noon in the garden just over the road from the Edinburgh Hotel at Mitcham and then in the high street bar at the Ed until about 6pm.

Michael waiting ...

Are they nervous? Yep ...

On goes the ring.
A good wedding

Pre-matched

Congratulations to Bec "Missy" Ogilvie of the Frocs (who hasn't turned up nearly enough this year!) on her recent engagement to boyfriend, Rob.
... Tregenza Times July 2003

Congratulations to Jack Walton and the dazzlingly delightful Emmanuelle whom Jack has imported into Adelaide from France where he recently worked.
... 18th July 2003

Congratulations to Paul "Kaboom" McFadden and the incredibly gorgeous Cherie who are engaged to be married. Apparently the big day is scheduled for some time perilously close to finals ...
... Tregenza Times April 2003

Congratulations to Dave Pack who will be marrying another from the Army. James Denley is going to England for the (military) wedding, so lots more information and pictures then. Congratulations to you both.

Congratulations to Andrew Beare and his long-time love, Kath Giddy, who recently became engaged!! Their engagement party is scheduled for the afternoon of the Elizabeth Sevens. We assume Bear won't be playing ...

Hatched

By September 2003 the Club was awash with babies! At any given home game you could expect to come across junior members of the families of Suttell, Porter, Uther, Brady, Pardoe, Elliott, and Dalton, with a Jasko and a Wilson on the way. In six or so years we'll have the state's mightiest Under 8 side (see Nick Brady (below) scoring his first try). However, for the moment we merely have a gridlock of prams and pushers. A clever, and clearly tired, mother has cleverly suggested that a corner of the enclosed balcony be padded and fenced off into a corral for the OC youngsters to mingle in. Damn fine idea. They could be checked in and out like library books.
... Tregenza Times, September 2003

Isabella Dalton
Congratulations to Jo and Andy Dalton on the birth of the lovely Isabella! We understand that their first child, Fred the Labrador, is delighted with the new addition and very protective. For example, if Jo falls asleep and Isabella starts crying, Fred helpfully wakes Jo up. Much more effective than a baby monitor!
... Tregenza Times, September 2003

Essi Elliot

Those of you who remember Gus Elliot from recent years (he played inside centre in the premiership team of 2001), he and his wife Anna are proud to announce the safe and happy arrival of young Essi Millicent Elliot. They had earlier been proud to announce the arrival of Essi Fredrika Elliot, but apparently she was an impostor. Gus and Anna will soon be returning from Melbourne to live in Adelaide for a year or so, but we are reliably informed Gus has permanently hung up his boots.

Nicholas Uther

To Jeremy & Sian a son Nicholas born on Monday 12th May, 7lb 10oz. Jeremy was still jumping from one foot to the other a week later. Another boy to the Crocs.

Cooper Waugh Robertson

Congratulations to Dwayne "Robbo" Robertson and Kristy Shires who have recently had a baby - Cooper Waugh Robertson (named after Steve, we believe). He weighed in at 4.1 kg. Andrea Finn is in the same Army Office as Robbo in Darwin, and reported back the happy news.
... Tregenza Times April 2003

Nicholas Brady

Please meet Nicholas Flynn Brady, the latest addition to the Brady Clan. His parents, Fiona and Ben, are delighted with him, and so they should be - he is a gorgeous little man. He entered this world on 21 November 2002 at a weight of 9 pounds 6 - which tends to suggest he'll be following his mum and dad into the front row one day.

On that topic, it's worth noting that Young Nick is the grandson of John and Judy Brady and is also the first Collegians' baby whose parents both play(ed) for OC. A third generation and a full blood Collegian! Congratulations, and much love, to Ben, Fi and Nick.
