Elizabeth Rugby Union Club will hold its 48th Rugby Union Sevens on Saturday March 5th 2005 at Womma Park.

This event is the longest running Rugby Sevens tournament in the Southern Hemisphere. It has been a qualifying round for the Adelaide International Sevens and has attracted teams from all over Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and other countries.

In addition to the main competition there will be a Women's and an Over 35s competition.

There will be prize money awarded for all competitions. Each team will be provided with a marquee for the day as well as ice, water and fruit.

Bad Women

The Frocs website was blocked across much of Australia last week by the Australian High Tech Crime Centre (ahtcc.gov.au). The Frocs site is quite obviously criminal and possibly even seditious, so I can see why they closed it down.
While the courageous AHTC spend their time chasing the Frocs, we're all getting our servers blocked by spam offering to sell us lots of things that are or should be illegal. I can see the logic in that. Go you cyber-cops.

Presentation Dinner

Presentation Dinner was a great night, better than usual thanks to the great venue.

Kristian Livolsi and the Observatory Function Centre have been generous sponsors in 2004, and the Observatory makes a great venue for our functions. Someone has suggested that we give far too many trophies noting that the 1st XV would have had enough to give one to everyone if Tommy Secker hadn't fixed that up. The $2000 tab was exhausted, much to the shock of the staff, in the 27th minute. The night rolled onward into the normal state of high spirits we've come to expect.

Tales are being told of brave deeds - one drunken first grader only getting into the pub because SOMEONE convinced the bouncers he had MS (Multiple Scotches?), a certain Froc being kicked out of the Casino for stripping down to her bra and running all over the joint, a first grader doing a pantsdown lap of the two-up table, two other Frocs pressing their bare breasts against a window overlooking the casino foyer, another first grader approaching a man (a total stranger) on a dare and saying "you look hot in those pants" and a group of the usual suspects ending up dancing around half nude at a certain pub with the Publican well into the morning hours until the Publican's Much Tormented Wife quite rightfully threw a wobbly, yanked the cord from the jukebox and ordered them all from the establishment.

A service to Celebrate her Life was held on Friday, September 17 at 2.30 p.m. at the Church of Epiphany, Crafers.

Our love and sympathy is extended to Bob and his family. In Christine's honour, the Crocs and Frocs wore black armbands in their grand finals on 18 September.

Rugby Ball Report

The Rugby Ball was held in July 2004 at the Observatory Function Centre on Hackney Road. The Observatory Function Centre is the club's new major sponsor for 2004 and they put on a great night for all who attended. The food was great and the alcohol just kept flowing.
There is some suggestion that the First Grade table drank more than even Kristian Livolsi (owner and manager of the Observatory and an ex Collegians prop) could have imagined. More beer than a Prop can imagine? Jeez. Shown below are photos of the demure and ladylike Frocs and their First Grade counterparts.

For the record, the First Grade won the boat-race but there is some suggestion of cheating! It would be fair to say that too much Robbie Williams was played by the DJ but it kept the crowd (and by that we mean Czezza) happy.

Thanks to the Observatory for the great venue. Those who missed out will have an opportunity to enjoy the Observatory's hospitality soon, we're holding the Presentation Dinner there on 24th September.

Wine & Cheese night

Cue & Brew - report

Success again with a great turn out for this event (though the crocs did themselves an injustice by not having players there supporting their beer tally quest).
The rules remained the same as last year with the fine jar raising a good amount of money for offences such as swearing, smoking or drinking over the table, cheating etc.
The fine jar judges took their role seriously and with much enthusiasm as I was hearing people being fined for such things as "intent to swear" and "harbouring a swearer" as the night progressed!
Though the reining champs were not both in attendance to defend their title a good contest ensued with Andy "Macca" McDougall and Christian "Tedgy" Tedge outdoing the eventual runners up Craig "I'm wankered" De Carle and Helga "devil woman" Power.
So congratulations Macca and Tedgy, and for that matter congratulations and thank you to all that turned out to once again support this event and making it a success once again!

All Collegians are famous in cyberspace

It's been called vanity surfing - looking for all references to yourself (and of those who share your name) by searching for your name in any of the search engines.

For instance, if you enter www.teoma.com or www.google.com in your web browser, then, for instance, "denzil church" in the search bar, you get the expected references to Denzil as a competent Collegians fullback of the 1970s and 1980s, as an employee of Flinders University, as a scholar of East Adelaide High School from 1962 to 1966 and, more importantly, that Denzil Church has services every Sunday.

Looking at "christian tedge" is interesting - references to him are scattered all over cyberspace but exclusively in the name of rugby. Looking on the abc online site reference to Christian you will also come across some references to Tim Austin.

Fern Black may be remembered for creating rugby table dancers, drawing out beautiful harmonys from the crowd ( well some times not so beautiful!), and even the occasional undies have been placed on the stage in appreciation for her entertainment!
Fern has returned from Coffs Harbour after performing to crowds throughout the Mid North Coast where she released her debut CD "Fern Black, How Bout That!" And now she's back! Fern has a big soul voice with a vivacious, addictive stage presence. Blues, Rock, Jazz and Soul is the gig with punchy guitar licks. Any age night of great music.

Tim Austin is now living and playing in Melbourne.

He writes: 'send my regards to the club. Tell them that Melbourne has its own Harry Clarks, Hamish Crannas, Denzils, Rayzor Butlers and the same regular guys who always hit the change rooms for a rubdown come the harder stuff (at training). It's hilarious how there are these sort of people all over the country - every club has them (thank God).
The clubman who is good to everyone - Harry Clark. Tony "Chunky" Burgess - the smartarse. The guy never short of a smart comment and knows a lot of club songs - Hamish Cranna. Harry - the guy who registers everyone - this guy is a cross between Mick Finn and Richard Waddicor. Women's coach - 'Purps' - an Irishman who loves the drinking as much as his girls!
I went to Geelong recently to play a game, and in the change rooms was non other - Andy Finn. She is the trainer for the Geelong Rams! Seems Old Colls and Geelong have a history with Muzza being the trainer there some years ago. That's trippy!
PS. Scored a try under the posts and we won the game 30-12!!"

With regards to the following photos, Tim says "We played Cerberus - the Naval base on the far coast ( an hour away ) we drew 14 : 14. Was very disappointing. They had a team full of NSW who were training at the time we played them."

Andy McDougall and Christian Tedge won the pool competition (known affectionately as Cue & Brew) defeating Craig de Carle's team. Andy and Tedgie were lucky, having been wiped out in the minor rounds by a Frocs team - Tara and Jules. Andy and Tedgie had a second shot thanks to a "wild card", and ran away with the rest of the competition. Craig and Dan Boughtwood won their minor round game, but Dan then absconded for another function and left Craig to find himself a new partner. A young woman by the name of Helga offered her services and played admirably for the rest of the tournament. Why Craig insists on calling her the Devil Woman is not clear. Thanks to everyone who made it happen, and particularly to Emma for organising it all (despite the ridiculous changes to the season draw) and also for wielding the swear jar with such unbending rigour.

It will be no surprise that after "Cue & Brew" (there being a lot more brew than cue for most people) the normal clubroom antics prevailed. In particular, Tommy Secker delivered Benny Hamer a truly spectacular wedgie. Why, you ask, do we bother to report this mundane fact? Well, apart from the comic value of Benny momentarily wearing his waistband around his head, we thought that the miracle of Benny actually wearing underpants at all was worthwhile of notice ...

Last year's trophy for Div 4's Best / Worst On-Ground (Master Bates the Cock) was given to Johnny Walker for his performances in the finals. Master Bates has been replaced by his (illegitimate) son Wayne Kerr (shown here with the beautiful Ethne Bird, born on 8th April 2004 and a veteran by virtue of having watched Dad play twice already).

To date the winners of Wayne have been: Michael Bell (excellent senior debut), Tony Bird (for having a daughter, not a son) and Simon Cross (excellent senior debut).

We hear from Jeremy "Mad Dog" Allport, currently based in Tanzania, that he took the weekend off recently and flew to Arusha for a game. Mt Meru was in the background and can be seen in the photo. "Great hospitality but feeling somewhat fragile today."

Kini Tavui

Following on from Kini's outstanding play of the 3rd of April, Kini has accepted a contract playing for the Canberra Vikings. Congratulations Kini - we all look forward to your return with all the training and play gained courtesy of the Vikings.
Kini will be sadly missed both on and off the pitch. However, we have little reminders of him around the place, like the rungs on the fence around the balcony which had to be bent out of shape to extricate his son's head recently ...

Carl Jones

Carl Jones was recently appointed as SARU Rugby Development Co-ordinator. Carl recently completed 16 years in the Royal Navy as a Physical Training Instructor and relocated from the UK to Adelaide in June of 2003. Whilst serving in the Royal Navy he was involved in rugby as a player, administrator and coach. He holds coaching accreditation from the UK and was appointed coach of the successful SAJRU Under-16 Team this season. Carl's main focus will be on implementing the SA Rugby Pathways Programme which has recently been developed by SA Rugby.

Report on the Open Golf Day

On Sunday 1st February, the second annual Old Collegians day took place in ideal weather conditions at the Tanunda Golf Club. A small group of players turned out plus two assistants, President Ted Apted (treasurer and security officer) and James Denley (beer delivery).

The morning's play determined the content of teams for the afternoon. An outstanding nine holes from Chezza (44) saw him as the leading player of the morning with other notable rounds from John (44) and Peter Denley (45) and Chris Hazzard (46). The two best received a bottle of Rockford Moppa Springs for their efforts. Peter and John Denley were disqualified for being part of the organising group so the wine went to Chezza and Chris. The other team captain for the afternoon was Macca.

Lunch was provided by the Vine Inn from Tanunda and there was plenty of it (two visits to the BBQ for most players). A choice of wines from the Coonawarra complimented lunch. Michael and Pauline Lowe and Kate Denley travelled up for lunch to give the assembled throng encouragement. Fortunately, we did not have to call on Michael's (Physio Direct) expertise before, during or after lunch even though there were some strained elbows. The five teams of three gathered at the tenth tee for the afternoons "Ambrose" competition with support staff.

There was the usual Old Collegian's competitive streak with some attempts to nobble the favourite players with additional beer supplies. Tedgy, Jeremy Thewlis and Luke Ory even practiced after lunch !!! After an enthralling afternoon's golf, the results were two teams on 39 and three teams on 40 strokes. Teams led by Macca and Peter Denley were tied on 39 and the count back was brought into calculations. The same count back that saw Macca run a controversial second place to organiser John Denley's team last year resulted in Macca's team winning the competition this year. Each player in Macca's team (Macca, Gordon Hazzard and Rob Love) received a bottle of Rockford Moppa Springs. Second team players received two golf balls for their efforts. Chezza's team ran third on count back from the other two teams and received a golf ball each. Ashley told a story about Chezza leading by example and playing some superb shots to save the team and was rewarded with a golf ball for the biggest lie of the day.

At the conclusion of the day the raffle was drawn by a completely uninterested bystander and the winner of a magnum of Rockford Home Block 1998 Cabernet (estimated to be worth in excess of $200 retail) was Gordon Hazzard. Gordon supported the day last year and again this year with a team of four and was a deserving winner with ticket number one (see Gordon you didn't have to buy the other 999 tickets to make sure you'd win !!)

Report on the Chinese New Year celebrations

On 24th January the Club welcomed in the Chinese New Year for the fourth year in a row. This year is the year of the Monkey, a year for cunning, trickery and hi-jinx; the club's coaches may wish to work this into their game plans.

As before, we had a healthy spread of roughly 200 club members, players, friends and neighbours. Traditional Chinese food was provided by the wonderful chefs who have now catered for (and tolerated) Collegians for quite a few years, both in their own restaurant, at the club and on a catering basis. Their details are available from Kim Evans if you are interested in truly excellent Chinese catering.

The kids always enjoy the night, and the most popular moment of the night was the breaking of a piñata (not entirely a traditional Chinese custom) and the subsequent riot caused by the prospect of free chocolate. We note that amongst the four deep throng of kiddies, Ben Suttell could be spotted scavenging just as hard as he could.

The fireworks display was, as always, very popular, and seems to get better every year. This year the fireworks were generously paid for by Michael and Anne Evans. The traditional Lion Dance display was as colourful as ever, and hopefully heralds in a lucky year for the club and its members.

GIVEN his background it's hardly surprising that Matt Kyriacou chose rugby as his sport.
The Old Collegians centre says the sport is "in his blood," as he comes from a long line of rugby players going back four generations.
"Dad played for Transvaal and nearly made the Springboks (the South African national team) before we left South Africa - my grandfather played for Zambia and my great-grandfather was a Springbok," he says.
Kyriacou, 12, took his first steps towards a rugby career when he took part in the national rugby union camp held in Armidale, NSW last month.
Under the guidance of players and coaches from Australia's top provincial side, the ACT Brumbies, Kyriacou was one of more than 80 youngsters hoping to make an impression.
He was one of just three South Australians at the camp, and he made enough of an impression to be pin-pointed by Brumbies coaches as a player to watch in the future.
Kyriacou himself was just happy to get over there and play.
I've played rugby ever since we arrived here (Adelaide) three years ago, haven't tried the other games, I just want to play rugby, whether it's for the South Australian Primary Schools team or for my club."
Former public relations officer for South Australian Junior Rugby Allison Cook, also attended the camp and says while there were only a few South Australians there, the coaches were impressed by the standard.
"All three boys performed well, much so that the New South Wales rugby people are in the process of setting up something similar here", she says.
"One of our boys actually won tbe award for the best Stage Two player (those aged 13 and 14) at the camp. That was a great boost for us."
Cook says while there aren't too many youngsters playing rugby in South Australia, the standard is improving, and last year's Primary School Carnival proved that.
"Two years ago when we went over there and played New South Wales we lost by 60 or 70 points. Last year they only beat us 20-10," she says.
"That's how much we have improved. So while we mightn't have the numbers that they do in some of the other states we are becoming very, very competitive, and that's surprised quite a few people interstate."

Before the weekend of RWC here in Adelaide, SARU and Adelaide Central Mission held a Rugby Ball of magnificent proportions. There were three tables of Collegians, who all ate heartily, drank deeply and danced the night away.

The flight from Singapore to Adelaide of the 5th of June was two-thirds full only so there was a spare seat between myself and a good-looking young woman. She initiated conversation. She's from Glasgow and has just completed her law degree. I'm going to Adelaide to see my boyfriend, she says. He's a rugby player, she says. My interest is aroused as the chance of my knowing him is increased. What club? I ask. Collegians, she says. Oh, who? Ben Hamer, she says. Well the coincidence is not unusual for the Twilight Zone that is Adelaide, so no real surprises. We chatted for awhile, then slept as we both wanted to be alert enough through Saturday to watch the rugby and drink a bit.
Welcome to Adelaide, Katrina. Hopefully you'll stay for longer than the planned month.

Candice Daniel and Christian Tedge are proud to announce the arrival of Ryan Daniel Tedge to their family. He's a hearty, healthy little fella that their friends insist on calling "Tonka". (If he'd been a girl, it would have been "Makita".)
He's a well behaved boy who apparently does little other than eat and sleep (sound like anyone we know?). Tedgie hasn't stopped beaming with pride since Ryan was born, and was particularly impressed with how far the kid can piss.

Congratulations to Greg and Maxine Moran on the birth of Callum Bruce Moran at 11.30pm Tuesday 6th April at the WCH.(No Calum Mackie - this Calum was not named after you!)
Young Callum was in a bit of a hurry to get - three months premature by caesarean! However, he is a hearty size in the circumstances, is breathing by himself and is eating well.
Callum was born after Max left a Tuesday night training - he's a true Collegian baby!
Always tough, Max is insisting she'll be back in the front row within weeks - but Ray's not so sure!

Matt and Michelle Carr (nee Wilson) welcomed a little son, Lachlan John Carr on the 28th of November at 10.17am by caesarean. Lachlan was 7lb 11oz (3.5kg). Congratulations!!

Congratulations to Esme and Richie Jasko who welcomed young Matylda Celeste to the world on 11 December 2003. She is a beautiful little girl who has been nothing but placid in front of all visitors, but we understand that she morphs into a screaming Demon Child in private.

Maxine Moran (nee Dunn) is pregnant! Congratulations to her and hubby Greg. They add to the increasing ranks of breeding Crocs/Frocs. That Under 8s team for 2008 is looking better and better.
