The winner will continue on its quest for rugby's holy grail, while the loser shall be taunted till my voice is sore.

Tired of paying $7 to wet your whistle? Constantly annoyed by having to move out of the way of fools who aren't even watching the game? Don't like your shoes sticking to the floor?

Then the answer to all your woes is at hand.

Waltz on down to the salubrious surroundings of Old Collegians. Couches, sideline experts, cold beer which is cheap and plentiful, as well as a big screen located near a massive screen all await you.

Just to sweeten this unbelievable offer, there will be a happy hour from 8.30 till 9.30.

Well, there will be a BBQ too. There will be some meat provided for a small fee and also some breads and salads etc. If you would like to, feel free to bring some of your own favourite BBQ meats. (In other words I'm not sure precisely how much meat is left at the club).

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am sure you are aware of the above game next Wednesday, 25th July, 7:OOpm at Brighton. What most people are not aware of is the fact that the Perth Spirit is in reality almost the entire Perth Super 14 Team, There is a minimum of four Wallabies in the squad, Matt Henjack, Cameron Sheppard, Scott Faver and Tye McKasick.
Our boys will need every bit of support that we can muster. The World Cup will be on display, it is free entry so let's get behind our boys.

On the back of a stunning final round win against the previously undefeated Melbourne Axemen, the Vodafone Adelaide Black Falcons have been acknowledged with the selection of 5 players in the Australian Rugby Shield Merit Team.

This is the first time in the 7-year history of the ARS a merit team has been selected following lobbying by the participating State Unions. I am pleased to advise that the players selected from the Vodafone Black Falcons are:

10 Aaron Mattin (Port Adelaide RFC)
11 Mika Leawere (Southern Suburbs RFC)

The Vodafone Black Falcons had the highest representation from all teams, two more than both NSW Country Cockatoos and Queensland Country Heelers which had three apiece with the Melbourne Axemen contributing two and one each from the Darwin Mosquitoes and the Tassie Jack Jumpers.

The selection of these players is an outstanding result for SA Rugby. It is a credit to the players concerned, their respective clubs for their support of the State Representative Program and the Vodafone Black Falcons coaches.

Congratulations to Matty, Tim, Aaron, Mika and Andy on their achievements and indeed to the entire Vodafone Black Falcons squad for flying the flag for South Australian Rugby in 2007.

Heavies Bar

The "Heavies Bar" at the extreme left end of the bar and the space between it and the fire. It's traditionally (but way before this web editor's time) been the place where the patriarchs would congregate and where your presence was by invitation only. It was a revered, almost hallowed, part of the club where your acceptance in the club, or as the case may be, your rejection from the club, was determined. Social acceptance or social rejection, with social anxiety between the two.
That was then. In 2007, in particular, the Heavies corner of the club is now populated by a nursery. The population explosion among Collegians, young and old (I was thinking then of Grant Grace and of Peter James), over the past 3 years or so has led to a proliferation of babies, toddlers, prams, dummies (not passes, no, those plastic things people insist on sticking into babies' mouths) and players current, recent and retired, quietly holding theirs or their friend's babies.
It can't get better than that.

 

Andrew Farquharson

This year we lose Andrew's talents as he takes off for Amsterdam for a year at least. And by the sounds of it we could be missing a few more Collegians to that enticing city later in the year. Getting so many awards last year must have caused it - where do you go on to from there? No doubt there'll be a decent send-off and we do want to hear of what adventures everyone ends up getting up to over there.

 

David Jacobs 60th B/Party

David Jacobs played for the club in the 1970s and was one of the 1971 Grand Final premiership winners. He was a player then along with the likes of Bob Burgess, Peter Allen, Doc Douglas, Dean Earle , Ian Hackett and others. His lovely daughter Vicki is organising his (surprise) 60th birthday party and would dearly love to see David's contemporaries as she knows her dad would be very pleased to see them. More details on the letters page. David can be seen, partly obscured in the 1971 photo

Axemen fall to Black Falcons

THE Adelaide Black Falcons ended the Australian Rugby Shield on a high with a hard-fought 24-19 win over Melbourne at Gleneagles Reserve, Seaton, yesterday.

Both sides crossed for three tries, but three penalty goals to full back Andrew Farquharson made the difference.

The victory was the Falcons' second for the season, having also beaten Darwin. Its two narrow losses were to NSW Country and Queensland Country.
Melbourne - unbeaten going into the clash - needed to win to claim the title but must now be content with second.

Black Falcons' coach Carl Jones has preached the need for composure and structure all season and it took until the final game for the side to heed his message.
"That was awesome," Jones said. "Our defence won the game - every player stood up.
"Early in the game we went too high (with tackles) but then we started to go low and got the results. We kept our structure and, for once, we kept our composure under pressure."

Melbourne applied the early pressure but it was the home wide which opened the scoring. Flanker Declan Scragg won the race for the ball and dived over for a try nine minutes in.

The Axemen have been noted for their powerful running and centre Tori Biddle burst through some sloppy defence to score under the posts 10 minutes later.

Farquharson landed his first penalty before Melbourne regained the lead when Clinton Haimona was on the end of several passes following a scrum win to cross for a try. Another Adelaide penalty cut into the deficit, before Mikka Lawrer scored a typical hard-running try to give the home side the lead again. But the Axemen hit back immediately with a converted try to winger Todd Cornford just seconds before half-time. Early in the second half the Falcons showed the composure Jones had been seeking when the side claimed the ball from a Melbourne line-out throw and Scragg was pushed over for a try.

Farquharson then stetched the lead to five points to put the pressure on the visitors. The next 30 minutes became a struggle with neither team threatening the line.

This is when the Adelaide defence was at its best, denying the Axemen very few opportunities to add to their score.

Jerseys

Our 1st XV, 2nd XV and Under 16s are all sporting new jerseys from Ticka Sports.

Our thanks go to sponsors EmbroidMe (seniors) and Finalysons (juniors) for making that possible.

They're good looking jerseys and the feedback from the players has been resoundingly positive, with the sole exception of a few fellows who are a little larger than their new athletic-cut jersey.

We've sent back to the manufacturer for 6XL's. The manufacturers are based in Asia, and we hear that they are highly amused at the idea of a player big enough to wear 6XL. After all, some families in Hong Kong live in apartments smaller than that.

Rugby 7s

We all heartily enjoyed the Adelaide 7s, and we're already looking forward to 2008. Tregenza played host to the Kiwis, the Kenyans and also to Hong Kong. Collegians were out in force at Adelaide Oval, many of the dressed like utter twits in the best tradition of Rugby Sevens.

It was also good to see a few Collegians of the past at Adelaide Oval, such as Sandy Taylor, Dean Bradley and Bec Ogilvy.

South Australian Rugby Union Hall of Fame

The South Australian Rugby Union Hall of Fame is aimed at providing recognition of individuals that have made a significant contribution to the game of Rugby Union in South Australia.

The aim is to ro recognise and enshrine players, coaches, administrators, referees and golden oldies who have made a significant contribution to the game.

Players are eligible three years after retiring from all levels of Rugby Union, including golden oldies.

The Hall of Fame Selection Committee will consider nominations of South Australian achievements at all levels of Rugby Union. Persons who have passed are still eligible for nomination.

Northampton & the Heineken Cup

It was April 1 but not April Fool

Occasionally you read of a story that sums up a lot of what the game represents. Northampton, haunted by the prospect of relegation after a miserable season find themselves playing Biarritz, the French champions, on their Basque home turf at the Anoeta Stadium. Northampton were quoted as 100 to 1 outsiders by some people earlier in the week. Biarritz are leading at half-time by 3 to 0, after ferocious defence from Northampton and with most of the play in Northampton territory. In the second half, another penalty goes to Biarritz, until with 11 minutes to go comes an intercept try from Robbie Kydd, a half-Scot half-Kiwi, followed by a conversion from Carlos Spencer.
The stadium crowd of 32,000 witnessed a game to live in the memory and "the Basque crowd added even more gloss to the occasion by burying their disappointment and giving Northampton a standing ovation."

General news for April

Leigh Marsland has been absent from training lately but with good reason. Some madman attacked him with a baseball bat and Leigh has had staples in his head for a few weeks. You can drink a man's beer, you can perv on his wife, but never never touch another man's ute. After this start to the year, rugby will be a gentle way to relax.

Our congratulations go to Matt Hodgson who is a Copper and competed in the recent Police and Fire Games. Not only did he compete, he won the Gold Medal for squash! Matt's son Joseph will be playing in the Under 10s this year.
We saw a few other Collegians competing in the Police and Fire Games, mainly in the rugby sevens. Our spies in the crowd saw Rick Grimes, Paul Simpson-Smith and Gavin Rowe take the pitch. We also saw our old friend Andy Dalton down from the NT (and playing for NSW Fire).

The renovations are complete! Our kitchen, showers and tiling are now officially installed, grouted, sealed and finished. Huge thank-yous go to Mark Pickard and his team from Direct Interiors for all their help, hard work and generosity.

 

Club creche

Michaela Osborne is providing baby sitting services at the clubrooms on a Thursday night to parents who struggle to balance their training commitments as well as the kids. The club will also provide a discounted subs rate to assist with these costs. However, we are just trialling it at the moment and if it is not used we'll have to discontinue it, so make use of it if you want to see it stay. Ask us if you are interested and would like more information.

Training times

Training starts at 6pm prompt on Wednesdays and 6.15pm on Mondays. Monday training sessions are evolving into an additional training session for the U16 and U14. It would be great to have some U18 to help with defensive lines for the U16s. U12s are welcome to come and join the U14 session.

 

Junior Fun Run

The Under 16s have been sporting great new jerseys courtesy of their generous sponsor, Finlaysons Lawyers. On 16th May we had a Junior Fun Run to help raise funds for matching new jerseys for the rest of the junior teams. It was a fantastic turn out of kids, parents and members of the senior club. It was great to see the older, faster and fitter kids helping out their club mates, jogging with them, encouraging them and occasionally carrying them. The Under 8s set a cracking pace; so much so that young Harrison (grandson of Mick & Barb Finn) was the first player of all teams to finish the first lap. However, the youngsters from the 8s and 10s flagged a bit after the couple of laps. To be fair, the vast majority of them finished their full 10 laps, to the horror of a couple of sponsors who had hastily promised $5 or more per lap, thinking they'd run out of steam after only a couple. The first to finish all ten laps was Ashwin Thomas, and D'Arcy Sadler ran the most laps, declining to stop until she'd finished 30. We are still collecting the money and we'll let you know how much we raised once it has all been counted. Thanks to everyone for their support.

 

SAPSASA Walla Rugby Sevens

We held the SAPSASA Walla Rugby Sevens at Tregenza on 23rd March and welcomed 300+ little ruggers to our field where they enjoyed a day of Sevens Rugby.
Our thanks to all the OC volunteers: Simon Macklin, Stewart Frew, Jack Campion, Henry Nutt, Tom Nutt, Jason Leonardis, Will Sadler, Sue Thewlis, Jo Macklin, Anne Bradley, Bob Stafford-Lee and Neil Bradley (and our apologies to anyone we've missed!).

 

Schools and Tournaments

As part of the South Australian Primary Schools Rugby Union Pathway, the Australian Rugby Union and SA Rugby Union are taking bookings from schools for free in-school clinics in Term 1. They are designed to prepare the kids for a SAPSASA Regional Walla Rugby Sevens Tournament in Weeks 5 - 8 of Term 1. This will be a full day tournament for boys and girls in Years 5, 6 and 7.

 

Kickstart Programme

SA Rugby will be holding the Kickstart Program again, a 6 week introductory program aimed at Under 8 to Under 12 age groups.
All coaches for U8's to U16's and Junior Co-ordinators are requested to attend a training session on 24th February which will also be attended by some of our Senior coaches and Rugby Committee.
There will also be a Secondary Schools 7's Competition during week 5 of Term 3.
The SARU will provide more information later.

 

Fees

Fees and discount structure for 2007
Full fee U8, U9, U10, U11: $70 per player; Family discount fee $45 per player
Full fee U12, U14, U16, U18 $80 per player; Family discount fee $50 per player

Where there is more than one player from a family registering with the club, the oldest child will be charged the full fee for their age group. The family discount fee will then be charged for the second and each subsequent child, dependant on their age group.

 

Registration Dates

The Club will be holding Junior Registration Days on Sunday 25th Feb and Sunday 4th March 2007 at Tregenza Oval, 11am to 4pm. There will also be a BBQ and Sausage sizzle. The junior club will also be hosting an additional registration day in line with the SARU Kickstart registration day, probably on the 24th March 2007. (This date to be confirmed later).

 

Uniforms

We hope to have the samples at the Registration Days of new inexpensive junior club fleece tops and fleece beanie hats for players and parents to order. The committee strongly encourage the fleece tops to be worn to and from matches and training sessions, to encourage a stronger sense of team and club identity. However, this is not going to be a compulsory uniform as yet.
We also hope to have adult sizes for any interested parties to order.

 

Training and Games 2007

The junior club will be running training sessions from Wednesday 7th March 2007 where we will be offering new and existing players the opportunity to initially take part in the Kickstart 6 week program (discussed above) and then continue with regular training sessions. It is anticipated that the first club matches will take place on Saturday 4th May 2007

 

3rd & 4th Grade Training on the 29th March

To all prospective 3rd and 4th grade players

Training on Thursday 29th March will be a Team Planning and Discussion Night.
No training - that's right, no fitness on the night!!

Instead, be at the Club for a 7.00 pm start for a discussion and planning forum and enjoy the free BBQ provided (maybe even a happy hour for the beers!!).

Barry Hickman and Steve Stanway, the coaches of the Third and Fourth grades will be discussing the season ahead. If you haven't already met them, the BBQ and drinks would be a good time to do so and have an input into how your rugby season is shaped and scheduled.

We will be hosting the Kiwi and Hong Kong teams for the 7s .. so 7s International Training: At Tregenza:

Friday 6th April: 10.30 am - 12 noon Hong Kong; we don't know about NZ at this stage.
Each day however an SMS comes in to say that our visitors are training in the southern parklands instead of at Tregenza. I can't offer any help other than to suggest you chase them up in the southern parklands if they're not at Tregenza ... or ring Sue Thewlis 0431 566 116 closer to the time. DENTIST'S MOUTHGUARDS AT COST - REPONSES REQUIRED ASAP
Thanks to the generosity of Old Collegian Dr Deb Rea you can get a dentally fitted mouthguard at cost, approx $80 (half what you would normally pay)! Your health insurance may cover ALL of this amount! Mouthguards will be fitted by the dentist at the club on a training night and delivered to you at the club within a fortnight - no need to go to the dental surgery. Please let us know ASAP if you are interested and we will contact you with more information.

Coach & referee forum

SA Rugby will be facilitating a Coach and Referee forum on Wed 11 Apr 07 at Sport SA (West Beach) commencing at 6.30pm.

The main objective of the forum is to open up communication channels between Coaches and Referees to discuss the Game Management Guidelines for the up coming domestic season. The referees will present to the group on new Laws and what they have been instructed to concentrate on this year. The forum is also the ideal opportunity for coaches to discuss areas of the game with the referees.

All Club coaches at all levels are invited to the forum, clubs are to forward the names of personnel attending to info@SARUgby.com.au by COB Thu 5 Apr.

Pub Crawl

The 2nd Annual Pre Season Pub Crawl

Last year we exceeded all expectations with a massive 75 people all in red shirts on the inaugural pub crawl and 90 people attending on the day. Norwood publicans did not know what hit them when a 90 strong crowd of Old Collegians arrived at their doorstep desperate for the next beer, after the 100m walk between pubs!

This year we hope for things to be even bigger and better, so keep Saturday the 24th March free because it is going to be huge. T-shirts will be available to buy from Tara in the club rooms after training on Tuesday and Thursday nights. As per last year all t-shirts must be paid for prior to the event, and will cost $25 (this will get you significant savings at a number of venues and guarantees you a brilliant evening). I will have sample shirts for people to view, try and buy within the next two weeks.

As they say, a club that drinks together wins together!!! Here's to the beginning of a brilliant season...

Pub Crawl Report

The Pre-Season Pub Crawl returned on 24 March with a vengeance.

Our particular thanks to the Feathers, the Kensi and the Ballroom for having us. We also dropped by the Robin Hood and the Colonist. At least I'm told we did.

It's all a bit of a blur. We had something like 80 people bouncing around and, if the bruises are anything to go by, we had some serious fun.

There were some special moments. Czeglik dancing on tables is always a sight to see. At least a couple of our ladies' team got a second look at the contents of their stomachs. Someone stole the official Pub Crawl Parrott, we suspect the girls from Southern Suburbs.
They and a few other people who also wish they were Collegians joined us for the fun. Andy Farquharson may or may not have set the world record on the beer bong (we can't be sure, the timer broke. We should have made him do it again). Brad McDonald, a recent graduate from our Under 18s, also established himself as pretty handy with a beer bong.

Brad made his rugby debut with the seniors during the Bartercard Cup and impressed coaches and selectors. It's great to see he'll be an asset both on and off the pitch. People mostly kept their clothes on, which is a first and in most cases a relief.

Fortunately, we seemed to escape without significant injury, with the notable exception of one bloke who was dared by an anonymous Welsh agitator to walk and pee at the same time. Advice for the future: zippers can hurt and Welshmen can't be trusted.

 

 

Golf Day and Wine Tour

Sunday 11th March: 5th Old Collegians Golf Day

I'm sure it will be a beautiful day and the Golf Day at Tanunda Pines Golf Club in the Barossa Valley should be great fun for all who attend. They day costs $60, which includes 18 holes of golf, on course drinks and a fantastic gourmet lunch.

If you don't want to drive yourself up there, so you can partake in the drinks provided on course, a bus will be leaving the club at 8am and will return all participants to the club at the end of the day for less than the cost of a normal taxi. Spots on the bus are $25 (some drinks will be provided), which is a great bargain at only $12.50 each way!

For those of you who would like a day in the Barossa but are not really keen on golfing, we will be running a wine tour of the region. All participants of the wine tour have a place on the bus and the trip will include a visit to the Farmers Market and a number of the fantastic wineries in the area. Gourmet lunch with the golfers is included in the cost of $55 per person.

Morning format 10:30 am shotgun tee off (9 Holes)

The morning golf is stroke
You must be ready to play at 10:15 am
At 10:15 make your way to your allocated tee
Stoke requires the player to count ALL shots
Fill in your score on each hole

If you are a novice golfer please do not have more than 10 shots per hole
Write a score of 10 in this case
This is to ensure that play is not too slow

At the completion of the 9 holes add up your total score
Write this score at the top of the card
Hand the card in when you arrive at the club house
These scores will be used to allocate teams for the afternoon round

Lunch (1:00 - 2:00)

Lunch is a BBQ
When you arrive back at the club house inform the "chef" what you want to eat.
There will be a choice of meats
Stay near the BBQ while your meat is being cooked
After you collect your meat move into the clubhouse
Salads and potatoes will be available with condiments
Drinks and coffee can be purchased over the bar

At approximately 1:45 the teams for the afternoon will be announced
Afternoon format 2:30 pm shotgun tee off (Ambrose)

Ambrose is a team game
The lowest handicapper (or best golfer) is appointed captain
Each team must be ready to play at 2:15 pm
Make your way to your allocated tee
From the tee each player plays a shot
The order of teeing off is determined by the captain
The team then selects the best of the tee shots and picks up the other balls
Each player then plays from the selected place (within 1 club length not nearer the hole)
On the green each player putts from as near as possible to the selected position
This is continued until the ball is holed out
Count the total number of shots played and record the score on your card
The captain is responsible for scoring
At the completion of the round the captain will add up the total score
This score is to be written on the top of the card
Captain to hand completed card in at completion of round.

The presentation will take place soon after the final group returns to the club house

Thursday 8th February

The turnout of people on this first Thursday of training for 2007, both of players and non-players, brings a promising start to the year. A lot of new and old faces turned out. Good to see, amongst (a talented cast of) others, Stewart Douglas, Mad Dog, Jesse, Rebecca D-L, Mick Finn (looking fit & healthy) & Paull Francis along with the usual crowd, a growing tribe of Collegians kids, a mob of ex-Juniors now back to play Seniors and Denzil & Barry Hickman bonding together while immolating the meat on the barbecue. All up, a good crowd.

 

Russ Shmaal

Russell Schmaal played for Collegians in 1975, or thereabouts, as half-back and is currently recuperating from a triple bypass. All the best there Russell getting back onto your feet again. If you read this, get in touch with us (bottom of the page) when you can.

 

Gary Bautz

Every year we pick two or three of our brightest junior players and send them off to a rugby camp in NSW. For the 2006 season the club rewarded Gary Bautz and Hugh Lord. Unfortunately for Gary, a swan dive off the roof over the Christmas holidays resulted in a broken elbow .... meaning that he'll miss his rugby camp experience in early 2007 and will have to postpone it until the same time next year. In a few years he will fit right in with the First XV. There have been a few of them who have fallen off roofs as well.

 

Will Chattaway

Will Chattaway (from our 2nd and 3rd division in 2006) was missing rugby so much he has gone to the UK to play. He has hooked up with London and Welsh at Richmond and is playing in their under 19s academy squad, sliding around in some Celtic bogs in Wales. He can't believe how cold it is down there, but he is enjoying the challenge of the tough Welsh game and looking forward to coming back for the new season with Old Colls.

SARU Constitution

December 2006

In mid-2005 the SA Rugby board agreed to undertake a review of its Governance structure and systems. Whilst the review in itself is good governance practice, it was brought about following a number of key events influencing the manner in which Rugby is operated in South Australia including the appointment of a chief executive officer and the sport's national governing, the ARU, also undertaking a similar process. The relevant papers can be forwarded to any of you who wish to review them and provide your comments. If you would like to do so, please contact Kim at kim@oldcollegiansrugby.org.au (rather than at this address which occasionally bounces hotmail and other accounts). We need to have final comments very shortly.

It is recommended that the current board structure be changed to comprise six Directors nominated by the members and up to three (3) Board-appointed Directors. Currently there are nine (9) Directors all of which must be elected by the members. The rationale for this recommendation is to pave the way for selected qualified people from the corporate sector to join the Board to complement (not duplicate) the skills currently held by the Board.

It is recommended that a staggered rotation system for board members with a maximum term in office be introduced. This will encourage board renewal while retaining corporate memory. Each of the Directors will be elected for a term of 3 years at the conclusion of which he/she can be renominated for another term as long as the total period as a Director is no greater than 9 years at which time the Director will retire for a period of at least 3 years after which he/she can be renominated. The exception to this will be the two Board appointed Directors who will be appointed for a period of 2 years at the conclusion of which he/she can be renominated for another term as long as the total period as a Director is no greater than 6 years at such time the Director will retire permanently.

It is recommended there be a requirement to have only one General Meeting each calendar year (the Annual General Meeting) and the Board to have the ability to call additional General Meetings if so required. The Board must convene a General Meeting if at least three Member Unions request so.

It is recommended that once elected or appointed to the Board of the SA Rugby, the Director must step down as an office bearer of a member or affiliate member. This will remove perceived bias, promote independence, remove conflicts of interest inhibiting board outcomes, create less work for individuals concerned enabling them to focus on State level issues. Due to the relatively small size of SA Rugby community, the definition of Office Bearer would need to be defined so as not reduce the 'talent pool' e.g. Office Bearer may include senior club roles such as President, Secretary, Head Coach, Delegate to SA Rugby.

It is recommended that the President of SA Rugby must not be a Director of SA Rugby, a member or affiliate member. It is also recommended that the role of Vice President be removed as it is deemed superfluous.

The Board has already endorsed the OneRugby discussion paper proposing SA Rugby take on the responsibility for the management of junior rugby in South Australia which would require the winding up of the SAJRU. This issue is being addressed under separate cover in consultation with the SAJRU.

In addition to the Constitutional changes suggested above, it is recommended that the board undertake further review of its functioning and performance. This initiative in itself is good governance and will send a positive message to our stakeholders that SA Rugby is serious about progress.

As discussed in the 2006 AGM, these recommendations have the personal support of Kim Evans, Ted Apted, Peter Allen, Richard Waddicor and Steve Boyd. However, the committee would be pleased to receive and take into consideration any concerns any club members may have.

Births

Congratulations to Matt and Michelle Carr (nee Wilson, an ex-OC women's player and daughter of the Dawn and Don Wilson who are still strong supporters of OC) on the arrival of Alicia on 16 March at 2.59am, at a tiny 7lb 7oz and 48cm in length.

Her brother, Lachie, has accepted her well, kissing and cuddling and trying share his food with her.

Our congratulations to Jim Denley and his wife Kylie on the birth of their son (a grandson to John and Kate Denley).

Jackson James Denley has arrived and we hope to see a lot of him as the years go by.

He was born on Saturday 24th March weighing in at 7lb 15oz.

We have a few photos of the young man and his adoring family, but our favourite is this one. It arrived under the name "Jackson Bigfoot".

My what big feet he has! And you know what they say about a boy with big feet... he needs big shoes.

Congratulations to Jon and Emma on the birth of young Oliver Collins. This young gentleman has an unparalleled Collegians pedigree, coming from combined Collins and Suttell stock. He's a good boy too. His arrival was vaguely expected to interfere with the First XV game against Brighton but even at this tender age he has his priorities sorted and didn't turn up until the middle of the next week. You will note that the young man bears the initials "OC". We can't wait to make his acquaintance

Tom Horne

Tom, another ex-juniors player, a son of Paul Horne & Ginny Bullen, returned to the game playing in the 4ths on the 14th of April. Welcome back.

Simon Bailey. Having recovered from last year's shoulder surgery, the Reverend Simon Bailey has announced he is returning to the pitch and the Game They Play in Heaven. We're very glad to have him. It never hurts to have God on your side. Simon and his family are also taking their vow of Australian citizenship soon too. As a proud new Australian, Simon tells us he is expecting a call from the Wallaby selectors any day now.

Iain Everiss. Iain left us at the end of last year, but he's keeping in touch. He reports as follows: "Thought I'd eventually say hi and let you know we did make it up here in one piece. For those interested we had overnight stays at Hay (yes we made Hay while the sun shone ... ok ... it's lame and over used but I like it), Gilgandra, Narrabri & Kingaroy. There is a LOT of Australia.
Anyways, how's it all looking for 2007? Fit and raring to go I trust?
I see from the website that Ian's back to sort you fellas out and you've even got a coach (hope he's better than last year's version ...).

Wandered along to training here last week. Consisted of half-an-hour of touch on the beach, a break for a beer and then another half-hour of touch. Shall we say they're relaxed. One of the lads from here at work (who's been here since October - ex-Wollongong) made it to Tuesday told me that was a full on fitness session - but we were back to touch on Thursday.

Rebecca (formerly known as Bob) Derbyshire-Lloyd came back from New Zealand. Great to have her back .....

Jeremy Thewlis is in Colorado USA spending his time skiing ... and also working at the snowier-ends of the ski-lifts. And some may call it work. He is planning, broadly, to get to England to catch up on the rellos and hopefully be in Paris for the RWC. Jeremy's mother - Sue Thewlis, our Secretary amongst other roles she plays, for those who've been kept in the dark over the years - knows little of the details of what Jeremy's been getting up to, but we understand for any details contact Jeremy's sister. We understand that Gary Pope's son is also in Colorado and playing for one of the rugby clubs up there. Keep in touch Jeremy, esp. regarding your whereabouts during the RWC.
