News 2009

Juniors' photos from 1996 to 1998

Some additional photo of the Juniors' from 1996 to 1998 have been added. There wasn't enough web-space in 1996 to put large photos in, and they had to be scanned from the prints. Photos in sections 1996, 1997 U14s & U12s, 1998-99 & 1998 U14s are new, scanned from the negatives. They've been resized from the scanned size to around 1Mb each. They're not the best scans but then they weren't the best of photos to start with although a good session with photoshop would do wonders, if there weren't so many. As more get done, the quality will improve.

Wanker of the Year Award

Just occasionally something is seen that becomes a definitive for crassness, stupidity, extremely poor taste, ignorance or boorishness. It can be so impressively so, that it deserves some recognition.
For the year 2009 I have no hesitation in awarding the Wanker of the Year Award to Brighton Rugby Club for that testicle-tightening Haka they put on after the Colts' game at Tregenza on the 8th August. I was embarrassed for you. You will get over it I'm sure, in time, but to help you not forget so easily, I've added two photos from that inspirational moment.
Thank you Brighton. I would hope that next year I would feel compelled to award it to someone else.

Arthur Mallison

Arthur Mallison of Woodville RUFC went into hospital for a heart operation on 6 July at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Unfortunately during the operation Arthur suffered a stroke. Although the operation was a success, Arthur was in intensive care for a period of time. Now well on the road to recovery, Arthur has been transferred to the Hampstead Hospital for rehabilitation. The doctors at this stage are unsure of how long Arthur will be in rehabilitation. Our love and best wishes go to Arthur.

Liam Gill, ex Old Colls' juniors' player, was recently named Captain of the Australian Schoolboys.

West End Trophy

The West End Trophy has been an SARU award for the Best Club decided by points awarded for a club's contribution to the game in South Australia. The points have been awarded based on criteria such as the numbers of state representatives - both seniors & juniors, the numbers of women players, the number of teams overall, the number of accredited coaches and referees that the club supplies to Rugby in schools, the number of club members appointed to SARU committees, the number of qualified coaches, referees, touch judges and sports trainers and so on and with points deducted for suspensions, forfeits, withdrawals and even the number of occasions the club fails to telephone results. So it's quite inclusive of elements that, arguably, determine the merits of what constitutes a club that contributes to the game in the 'right' spirit and for the love of the game. Which, of course, is only one definition of what makes up the 'best club'.

However, whenever a club tends to dominate in any particular category then quite obviously, and without argument, this can be seen to be divisive. It encourages a lack of willingness to compete by others to win that trophy. It certainly doesn't encourage those clubs that, for whatever reason, fail to field a full range of teams or lack the commitment to develop their junior sides. Before Collegians decided to challenge for the West End Trophy, for instance, it was seen to be the exclusive province of Brighton and we assumed we'd not be likely to win it. So we never bothered. And the criteria to determine the points were quite difficult to interpret.

The SARU has decided that a more equitable method of determining the best club is by performance on the field, so the new trophy, or the new generation of this trophy, will be awarded determined by the total of premiership points earned by each club's senior squads, including the 18s, but excluding the rest of the Juniors, and with the First Division points counting as double.
So this, apart from being a more understandable and less confusing method, will be the criteria by which each club can equitably compete in the future for what determines South Australia's best club. This new initiative of the SARU will apply from 2009.

Referees

There's no game without the Ref...

Due to lack of refs there have recently been games refereed by non-refs who've volunteered at short notice and one senior game had to be cancelled altogether.

If the SA Rugby Community does not find more referees, we will be playing less and less rugby in Adelaide .

If you would like to referee, PLEASE contact

SA Rugby as soon as possible.

And while we're on the subject of encouraging participation in refereeing ...

ARU Code of Conduct

By-Laws 3(h), (i) and (j)

These by-laws apply to all players, coaches, club members etc and prohibit:

  • abuse of any match official (whether on or off the field),
  • showing obvious dissension, displeasure or disapproval towards a match official or his/her decision, and
  • using crude or abusive language or gestures to match officials or spectators

There has been an increase of this type of behaviour from Old Collegians across the board. It is fruitless, stupid, ill-disciplined, and contrary to the Laws of Rugby and the ARU Code of Conduct. Frankly, it ought to be beneath us. Please do not engage in this type of behaviour and actively discourage it in others.

Club newsletters

Way back when, in 1996, webspace was rationed and websites had few photos posted. The ones that were posted were low-resolutions from photos scanned by primaeval scanners, so the quality and the quantity weren't too flash. And for those too young to remember it was, effectively at least, the pre-digital photo age.
I've bought a new toy in a film scanner. Film negatives go in, scanned images come out, and scanned up to what would have been unthinkable resolutions in the distant 1990s. It's still limited however to the quality of the lens and the film (I used a lot of 400 ASA then) used on the original photos but it means I can put up a lot of older photos on the Collegians website.
Most of the negatives are back in Adelaide, in store. I got to the filing cabinet with all the club stuff in last time I was in town and moved it to the front of the lock-up so I can get to it the next time I'm in town and have the time to spend on it. The old club newsletters that I haven't already copied need to go to a professional printer (got to be easier) and can be done on decent paper acid-free paper. The Mortlock Library have expressed an interest in having the originals and the Mortlock is the best place for them to go. Club Presidents come & go and interest in the club's history comes and goes as well, so with them in the Mortlock one shouldn't have to worry.
If anyone has anything of Collegians history now's the chance to get it replicated and kept in perpetuity. Let me know please. Also any negatives of photos or photos that haven't faded, which eliminates most colour photos from the 1960s and 1970s.

Curry Night Report

Thanks to all who took part in annual curry cook-off and particularly to our 13 wonderful chefs and 4 exceptional judges, all of whom, arguably bar one, understand curries . All entries were excellent. Anne Hickman walked away with the prize for Best Tasting Curry while Leigh Rebbeck's "Widowmaker Vindaloo" was clearly the hottest (just ask Luke Bailey).
