If you'd like a copy of the Annual Report, email kim@oldcollegiansrugby.org.au

OC finished 2013 in a strong position on and off the field.
The 2013 Committee was returned with only a few exceptions.
Richard Czeglik retires as Vice President (but remains on the Committee). Daniella Di Girolamo and Paull Francis both retire from the Committee. Thanks to all for their hard work in 2013, and we look forward to another great year.

President: Kim Evans
Vice-President: Lenny Eilers
Registrar: Rob Paprzycki
Secretary: Sue Thewlis
Treasurer: Amanda Porteous
Committee Members: Stewart Douglas, Simon Allport, Jack Campion
Director of Rugby: Danny McCartan

Selectors: Doug Mein and Ian Walker

Last but not least, Mike McCrea is retiring as Head Coach due to work commitments. We thank him warmly for his contribution; he has had a big hand in OC's resurgence over the last 4 years and the techniques and disciplines that he has instilled into the playing group has set the platform for our current and future successes across all grades. Thankfully Michael will still be around and supporting the club particularly through the OC Player Trust. It was originally Michael's vision to establish the Trust and he has been instrumental since then in its setup and fundraising activities.

Dot Rogers

With sadness we farewell Dot Rogers, Bert Rogers' widow, who passed away last week after a long illness at the age of 91.
Our condolences and love go to Dot's friends and family. Bert and Dot were great club people; Bert was a revered President but he and Dot were an even greater partnership. Bert and Dot were like parents to the players of the time, many of whom were from interstate or overseas. They would open their home to club members, and were generous with their time and affection. In the pre-clubrooms era, they would bring out a tent to Tregenza to provide shelter for the players as they came in from from the weather, and there they would find Mother Dot waiting with hot cups of tea and scones for them.
The money raised from Dot's High Tea in the tent was the start of the club's deposit for the construction of the clubrooms.
Next time you find yourself leaning on the bar, say a thanks and goodbye to our Dot.

One other award was presented on the night: the Alan Spry Memorial Trophy for Portraying the True Spirit of Rugby was presented to our Director of Junior Rugby, Stewart Frew.

It would normally be awarded at Senior Presentation Night, but we wanted to present it in front of the people Stew has worked so hard for all year. There can be no doubt that Stewart portrays the 'true spirit of rugby'. That spirit can be hard to define, but it is something like a blend of mateship, contribution, fairness, encouragement and plain old fun.

We are very lucky at OCs; so many of our people glow with 'rugby spirit', but Stewart takes it to the next level. Not only is he filled with his own spirit of rugby, but his enthusiasm and love of the game spills out and infects everyone around him. A rugby Johnny Appleseed, he plants the love of rugby where-ever he goes in the hearts of the people he meets. The wonderful vibe in the Juniors this year has delighted everyone and has made us a much stronger club, and is due in no small part to Stew's simple, contagious 'sprit of rugby'.

The force is strong in this one. We thank and congratulate him.

Vale Bob Burgess

Bob Burgess - 1971 1st Premiers

Bob Burgess 1971

Bob Burgess joined Old Collegians Rugby in 1954 when it fielded a single team and the whole of the State boasted only 6 clubs. Five times he was in an Old Collegians' premiership 1st XV, and over the years he played more than 700 games of rugby for Old Collegians. He also served 3 years as SA's hooker, including against the Lions in 1966.

Bob was made a life member in 1971, and was inducted into the SA Rugby Hall of Fame in 2007.
In addition to his amazing feats on the field, Bob was a staunch & hard working club member; he was at different times Club President, Club Captain, a general Committee Member, a Selector, First Grade Captain and Coach. In recent years he has been n ever present passionate supporter of our lads; the balcony at Tregenza will seem strange without Bob and wee Charlie.

Bob was a tough player, a great clubman and a true gentleman. Moreover, he was our very good friend, and we will miss him and remember him forever.
Vale, Bobby.

JUNIOR RUGBY
Oztag Challenge

The pre season fun and games started with two weekends of OzTag, organised by Stewart Frew in conjunction with the SARU. The competition was held in good spirit and all of the Old Collegians teams looked fit and keen to take line honours throughout.
However fine performances from Brighton and Burnside denied them.
A wonderful weekend culminated in a 3rd place for the U12s, 2nd place for U14s and 2nd place for the U16s.
We look forward the Sevens on the weekend of the 20th April and then the first match on Saturday 27th.

Rokobaro and English to debut for the Rebels in Round 1 of Super Rugby

13 Feb 2013

RaboDirect Rebels Round One team announcement
Melbourne Rebels
12 February, 2012

The RaboDirect Rebels have announced their Round One side to take on the Western Force at AAMI Park this Friday, with six debutants named in the team of 22.

The match will open the 2013 Super Rugby Competition (http://www.sydneyunirugby.com.au/_blog/Club_News/post/Rokobaro_and_English_to_debut_for_the_Rebels_in_Round_1_of_Super_Rugby/#) here in the city of Melbourne, in what will be the biggest year in the history of Rugby Union in Victoria.

Head Coach Damien Hill has called three debutants into the starting line up, including Wallabies flanker Scott Higginbotham, relatively unknown New Zealand flanker Scott Fuglistaller and former Western Force centre Rory Sidey.

Higginbotham has fully recovered from a shoulder injury, which has kept the dynamic backrow forward out of action since the Wallabies win over Wales at Millennium Stadium in December last year.

Scott's fitness (http://www.sydneyunirugby.com.au/_blog/Club_News/post/Rokobaro_and_English_to_debut_for_the_Rebels_in_Round_1_of_Super_Rugby/#" ) has been under a cloud since his return from the Spring Tour, however the High Performance Staff at the Rebels were quick to escalate Scott once clear of his injury.

Partnering the former Super Rugby Player of the Year runner up will be openside flanker, Scott Fuglistaller, after some impressive trial form during the Club's Hobart and Geelong matches.

The New Zealand born Fuglistaller played two Super Rugby matches in 2012 for the Highlanders - covering for injuries late in the year - but is best known for representing the Wellington Lions in the ITM Cup.

He is touted as the Club's dominate 'fetcher', with the ability to also carry into contact, and he will bring a new dimension to the team with the departure of 2012 openside flankers, Michael Lipman and Tom Chamberlin.

The bench will see three new faces in Rebels colours, with former Stade de France outside back, Alex Rokoboro, Sydney University centre, Tom English, and Japanese international Shota Horie all making their debuts from the reserves bench.

It is a reward for persistence for Rokobaro, who played for the Rebel Rising in 2011, before venturing to the European glamour in a quest to return to Super Rugby.

Reds back Gill

February 12, 2013

Under the radar ... Liam Gill.

All the talk about David Pocock and Michael Hooper combining in the Wallabies back row hasn't enamoured the Queensland Reds who believe their No.7, Liam Gill, should jostle his way into the action.

Hooper's emergence as a world-class openside breakaway, after slipping seamlessly into Pocock's Australian jersey last year, has sparked calls for both to start against the British and Irish Lions in June. But Reds coach Ewen McKenzie tips Gill to further complicate selection matters - starting with Saturday night's Super Rugby opener in Canberra.

The leading ball pilferer of the 2012 Super Rugby competition, Gill played eight Tests but then made way when Pocock returned from knee surgery. "In many ways Liam has been the forgotten guy of the No.7 options in Australian rugby; everyone talks about the other two," McKenzie said.

"These games [against Brumbies and Waratahs] will be great showcases for someone like him."
