CHANGES TO JUNIOR FINALS STRUCTURE, & PERTH SPIRIT v WESTERN SYDNEY RAMS
Adelaide will host the Perth Spirit v Western Sydney Rams NRC fixture on the 6 September 2014.
The first weekend of finals will be held at Thebarton Oval for all junior and senior games.
It has been proposed that all attendees and players over the age of 12 pay $5.00 entry to make the NRC fixture possible, rather than paying $15 entry for the NRC fixture as a stand-alone game at a different venue.
Junior Finals in 2014 will take a slightly different structure than previous years; teams that finish 1st to 4th in U12s, 14s and 16s will follow the senior finals format.
This means three weeks of finals:
Week 1: 1st v 2nd, and 3rd v 4th
Week 2: Loser of [1st v 2nd] v Winner of [3rd v 4th]
Week 3: Grand Final - Winner of [1st v 2nd] v Week 2 Winner
This means that the U12s, 14s and 16s Grand Finals will feature on the traditional senior Grand Final Day.
Teams that finish 5th to 7th in U12s, 14s and 16s will also get a finals experience. The 5th placed team will go directly through to the Plate Final on the middle weekend, with the 6th and 7th teams playing off in Week 1 of the Finals to qualify for the Plate Final.
UNDER 12s, STATE REP TRIALS
U12s open trials will commence on completion of the State 13/14/15/16 program. More information will be released in due course. Adelaide plays host to the U12s Championships this year, October long weekend.
DON SMITH AWARDS
Junior grades and lower grades will feature at the Don Smith Awards night this year.
More information to be released by SA Rugby soon!
Bob Burgess Cup Day 28th June
Thanks to all of you for joining us on 28 June to remember Bob Burgess.
We are ever grateful to kick off on Tregenza with the memory of Bob at our backs & to lean on the bar afterwards to raise a pint to him.
We were deeply moved to play host to so many of his family and friends, particularly those who travelled from around Australia, and those who left their own clubs for the day to join us at Tregenza.
Our thanks go to all those who made it possible, including Oli Porter, David Hartford, John Gaughan, Gordon Hazzard, Paul Leonard, Thomas Foods International, Tim & Jo Rogers, Lion Nathan, Bob Lightfoot, and Stew Frew.
Thanks also to Brighton RFC for sharing the day with us, and for playing a cracking game of rugby that would have thrilled Bob - even if he had preferred a different result!
Thanks also to the lads in black and gold for staying for a few drinks afterwards. Bob would have appreciated the post-match banter with his favourite rivals.
Our congratulations to Brighton RFC for winning the inaugural Bob Burgess Cup, and to Jack Cook for winning the Bob Burgess Medal for Best on Ground. We are pleased to announce that on the day we raised approximately $2000 to donate to Gastro Intestinal Cancer Research in Bob's name.

Old Collegians Rugby Club 2014 Under 14 Squad
Hi All.
The weather is not looking to favourable tomorrow but the rugby should be great.
We host Brighton and look forward to a fierce contest every time we meet Brighton. They have been an exceptional Club for a very long time and we should be treating this game with much respect.
Brighton are never to be underestimated no matter where they sit on a Premiership table.
So tomorrow with the wet conditions expected we need to play Smart Rugby.
Our 3 Key words will be super important tomorrow.
Communication
Contest
Support
These three key word if executed correctly should lead to CONTROL.
In slippery conditions we must control the ball. Sympathetic passes will be required. Pass the ball to your team mate the way you would like the ball passed to you.
Get low in the ruck to clean out.
Be the strong body over the ball.
Look for options.
Never let a team mate run on their own.
Remember to ask parents to stick around or come back to watch First and Second Grade later in the day.
The First Grade are playing for a Cup this weekend named after a member "Champion Man" of our Club that passed away last year. Some extra activities will occur on the balcony and should be a great crowd.
State Players should also try to get about the crowd with the donation tins that have been organised for their trip to the Gold Coast as a way to get some monies for each players trip.
See you all at 9am for warm up.
The Coaches
Steve,Richie,Graham & Stewart.

CUTS & SCRATCHES
We've had a few players in the last week have scratches get badly infected. It might just be coincidence, but we're making enquiries to see whether there is anything nasty on the field or in the water supply. In the meantime, please make sure that you carefully clean any cut or scratch after training or playing at Tregenza.

All going well we shall have all photos taken prior to kick off of each game. We would also like to get a group photo of all the JPP players (U7, U8 & U10) including Team Managers and Coaches. If we can we will try to get some individual or group shots of each team's coaches and managers. Also at some time we will be looking to get photos of committee members and office bearers as possible content for the year book.
MAKE US PROUD!
There have been some unfortunate incidents in SA Rugby recently, and while we are confident they would not happen at OCs it is timely for us to remind everyone that Old Collegians has expectations of good behavioural practices from all coaches, players, officials and other members.
- Old Collegians encourages all of its members to act in a manner that is responsible and socially acceptable in order to maintain the integrity of the game and to protect the image of the Club. "The Game and the Club will always be greater than the individual"
- Never abuse or threaten a referee or other official
- Never show obvious dissension, displeasure or disapproval towards a referee/official or his/her decision
- Never use crude or abusive language or gestures towards referees or other officials or spectators
- Never do anything likely to intimidate, offend, insult or humiliate another participant on the ground of religion, sexual orientation, disability, race, colour or national or ethnic origin of the person
- Players must not engage in foul play (such as striking, biting, tripping, & dangerous tackles/charging)
These types of conduct contravene the Laws of Rugby, and the Codes of Conduct of the Australian Rugby Union, SA Rugby Union and OC.
A breach of those Laws or Codes by any club member can result in bans, and penalties/ loss of competition points to OC, as well as our own disciplinary measures. More importantly, these types of conduct are not who we are, and for that we are grateful.

Barossa Rams
1st XV & JUNIORS Barossa Rams will no longer be participating in 1st Grade, only in 3rd Grade. 1st Grade teams will now have a bye when scheduled to play Barossa. All 1st XV Barossa fixtures (past and future) will be recorded as 20-0 forfeits. Some Elizabeth Reserve Grade fixtures will now be scheduled at 3.20pm and other fixtures will be pushed up. In addition, Adelaide University and Vikings will be merging their U12s, U14s and U16s and will follow the Adelaide Uni line in the draw. Games scheduled against the Vikings in those age groups will now have a bye. SA Rugby and all clubs will be discussing what to do about finals standings (i.e. uneven number of fixtures, byes, etc). We'll issue an updated OC calendar in due course.
Tregenza Playground
Burnside Council is undertaking an upgrade of the Tregenza Oval Playground as part of its broader Playground Strategy. As a result, parking around the south side of the clubrooms will be somewhat disrupted until the upgrade is complete, which will hopefully be in early June (weather permitting). The upgrade is on accordance with a concept design developed in response to community feedback, which favoured improved swinging, sliding, climbing, seating and shade. The new playground will see the popular existing swing and slide replaced with up to date versions of the equipment. Mounds with artificial grass will add climbing and sensory experiences for younger children.
Further interactive elements such as sound tubes and puzzle panels will ensure as many play experiences as possible are fit into the small space. In terms of additional amenities, upgraded fencing, rubber surfacing and ramp access on two sides will ensure a safe experience for carers with young children.
Volunteer of the Month for May
It was another proud moment to be associated with Old Collegians Rugby Club on Saturday morning when two of our Junior Referees - Rhys Frew and Luke Howes - offered their refereeing services at our Juniors' away game at Waite Oval. Adelaide University was short of junior referees for the Junior Pathway games and expressed their delight when they heard that Rhys and Luke volunteered to referee. Thank you Rhys for taking the U7s and Luke for refereeing the U10s game!
Another special Old Collegian this week was Jane Richards – she offered some amazing strapping assistance to our seniors at Woodville yesterday afternoon. Tim Wall said she did a great job helping to strap the players on the side-line whilst he could still keep an eye on the field for any injuries during the games.
Volunteer of the Month for April
Under 12 OC player Brady Carlson-Stewart was announced as one of SA Rugby's Volunteers of the Month for April. Brady has been a fantastic assistance to SA Rugby Staff during the Bartercard Cup. Each round Brady made himself available as a ballboy and covered long hours on the sideline to ensure the games flowed well. In Round 1 at Dry Creek he worked his socks off to cover two fields and retrieve numerous balls from roofs, carparks and gardens. At nearly $100.00 for a match ball, Brady ensured none were lost. Brady would call the office each Friday to make himself available and organised lifts from his parents to ensure he was there on time. He even ran with a water bottle to ensure the Touch Judges remained hydrated. Showing maturity well beyond his years, Brady is a fantastic young man who displays a strong passion for the game of Rugby Union both on and off the field. What a great kid!

TREGENZA OVAL
Thanks to OC's proactive Jemma Taylor, Councillor Anne Monceaux and the staff of Burnside Council, Tregenza Oval is now equipped with a dog-poop-bag dispenser. Hopefully from now dog- walkers will do the right thing a bit more often and leave our field cleaner! Council have also trimmed back the trees around the western field-light so that we are bit better lit, and they are in the middle of upgrading the playground. On top of that, Mark Pickard (one of our favourite benefactors!) is about to in the middle of the roof repair our wind-torn roof now that the insurance claim has been approved, and is in process to get the northern night tower back up. Exhausted just thinking about it all? Us too!

Bartercard review
Bartercard Cup Finals Preview 2014
Conor McLeod April 11, 2014
Green & Gold Rugby
SA rugby fans, we have a couple of big rivalries to round out the Bartercard cup pre-season action this year. With the action taking place down at Gleneagles Reserve, it should a great day for the competition.
Here's a bit of a preview to get the juices flowing. Let the banter begin ladies and gentleman. Premier Grade Cup Final: Burnside vs Old Collegians
It's to be the battle of the Eastern Suburbs out there as these two clubs once again attempt to knock each other off. Burnside found some success in the Bartercard Cup last year; just defeating Old Collegians in the semi finals with a last ditch effort after the siren. To that, Old Colls answered with two comprehensive beatings during the regular season on their way to a Grand Final appearance. So you can see there's a lot of recent history, never mind the rivalry found going back through the years.
As for this year, so far Old Collegians have been the form team, with easy wins against Souths and Onkaparinga. With that said, Burnside will be hyped after their recent last minute win over reigning champs Brighton. With both teams looking to make a statement on the competition, its going to be a tightly contested game.
Matchups:
Some of the key match-ups to look out for will be in the close in around the ruck. With No. 9 Robbie Harlow, an ex Burnside player in his first years for Old Colls, his usual dominant self, Burnside will need to find a way to neutralise his passing and general playmaking. Widely considered the best halfback in the state, his influence will be crucial.
Similarly Gary Mann of Old Colls will be very important in getting his team on the front foot. The Flanker was the second highest try scorer in the league last year, and although not a giant, he is a damaging ball runner with pace who runs very good line.
As for Burnside, Tom Hankey is one to watch for. An English import acquired halfway through last season, the boy is big. A powerful scrummager and mobile for a prop, he'll have to play a large role if Burnside are to have a chance.
James Worlock is another English lad new to the club this season. Only 19 years old, he has played at a high level in the UK. The Flanker is very good defensively, and his support play will definitely be needed. Some more names to keep an eye on:
For Old Colls:
George Bretag-Norris (Lock), Rob Smedley (10), Paddy Macklin (12) and Chris Bartlett (14)
And for Burnside:
Dan Hartman (8, Lock), Nichel Lam Sam (7), Marc Pilla (9, 10), Callum Walton (12,13)
It's going to be an awesome match to top off an awesome day of Rugby. Although the game above starts at 6.50pm, there will be matches running from 11am. From juniors to seniors, from Women's rugby to the Police Games, make sure you come down for a look. Best of luck to all teams and players competing this weekend.
FIRST HOME GAME!

SA RUGBY BID FOR NATIONAL RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP
SA Rugby has put in a bid for a team in the inaugural National Rugby Championship which starts in August, amongst 40 other expressions of interest, and we expect to hear more by mid March.
CEO Lachlan Clark has said the strength of SA' s bid would hinge on having a sound financial model and the ability to attract players to SA.
Some Super Rugby players would be made available, but recruitment from interstate would still be necessary to field a competitive outfit.
We don't have the Super Rugby franchise like Melbourne, Canberra and Perth or the full-time staff required. But we believe we have a big, untapped rugby population of fans and the International Sevens showed we can get commercial backing.
Key criteria in determining the successful bids will be financial performance, professional staffing structure and environment, commitment to player development, venue facilities, links to Super Rugby clubs and potential fan base.
The competition will be contested from August to October.

WELCOME, MAX OSCAR MOON!
Congratulations to Tom Moon & Irene Valli, 4th November
WELCOME, NICHOLAS PORTEOUS!
Congratulations to one of our favourite Gentlemen of the Front Row, Robbie Porteous, and one of our hardest working volunteers, Club Treasurer Amanda Porteous - they have a son! Nicholas James Porteous entered the world on 31 May 2014, weighing in at over 9 pounds. If his folks are anything to judge by, that young man is going to be a great clubman before he can even walk. Much love to all of them.
