Vale Jonah Lomu

Jonah Lomu with Mike von Berg 1996

In Mike's words: "Very sorry at the news that this great man is no longer with us. He redefined rugby wing play like nobody had ever seen or experienced and off the field a humble and wonderful ambassador of the game. This shot was taken in Adelaide in 1996 at The Provincial International Sevens Tournament where JL played for Counties. For those of you of military background the coach of Counties in the shot is Mac McCallion who served with Kiwi SAS attached to Australian SAS in Vietnam. To Jonah's family and so many friends he has made in the rugby world our condolences from a small rugby State but big on heart and passion. RIP"

George Bretag-Norris is thriving at the deep end for Cambridge

Water polo's loss has turned into Cambridge's gain when it comes to George Bretag-Norris.

The 23-year-old Australian has caught the eye with some impressive performances since moving to Volac Park, with the ease in which he has slotted in to the second row being a key reason why they have won five of their first six games.

And more of that all-action nature will be required tomorrow when leaders Taunton Titans are in town, bidding to defend their 100 per cent start to the season, with the game kicking off at 2pm.

Bretag-Norris has shown an aptitude to be almost ahead of the game at each play, leading the charge to the breakdown and quick and evasive in the loose, and the player believes that his sporting past may have helped hone his rugby abilities.

Ms College

Vale - Ian Barwick - a long time member of Old Collegians died last week after a long battle with cancer. Our condolences to his family.

Ms College

Contrary to popular demand, 1st August brought the biennial return of the travesty that is the 'Ms College' pageant. The bevy of beauties was struck down by the same scratchings that hampered us on the field that day, with Will Sadler, Rob Smedley, Matt Sharples and Andrew Kennett unable to compete. The rest of the field rose to the challenge and, in turn, delighted and appalled us with their efforts in day wear, evening wear and lingerie. Some were gorgeous, some were hilarious, some were obscene, and some were distressing.

The ultimate winner was Dave Sandison, beating out his runner up by only 1 point. Ben Suttell won the Calcutta and took home $415 for an investment of $45. Congratulations to all the brave and beautiful competitors - Dave Sandison, Tom Armstrong, James Sheekey, Jamie Punshon, Karl Edgar, Jason Hyam, Paddy Macklin, and Justin Elder, and to MC the pretty Lady Saigon (aka Timmy Chew).

Thanks go to the members of the women's team who applied their transformative skills to great effect. Particular thanks go to Dani Di Girolamo for all her hard work in steering the great night to success.

President's Mid-Year Message

Almost half way through the year and time for a recap on a few achievements:

The balcony changes are in place and functioning well. A new storage area, bar and much needed merchandise room are now in use. The annual mud patch in front of the clubhouse has been replaced with an expanse of concrete that is providing better access to the clubhouse as well as solving what was always a major mid-winter problem. A new sound system has been installed with internal and external speakers to allow better communication for members, functions and major events on the pitch. In addition a new 70 inch LED TV now provides clear viewing of sporting and other events in the clubhouse.

We are at or near the top of all senior men's and women's grade tables. Our junior numbers are at an all-time high and all playing well and improving all the time. It was pleasing to see how the whole club came together recently to raise funds for the audio-visual equipment. Lots of juniors and a few old codgers made their way around Tregenza for the obligatory 10 laps. For some, I can assure you, it was a struggle and there were tired legs the following couple of days. Well done to all participants and many thanks to the sponsors of those participants.

The rest of the year is about positioning ourselves for finals success. No matter what team you are in, it is now about dedication and determination. For players, members, supporters, family members and the wider community I trust the club has provided, and will continue to provide you all with a rewarding experience in 2015.

Warmest Regards

John Denley

Beer Pong

Beer Pong 4th July

Ms College 2015

It's back. Contrary to popular demand Miss Collegians returns for 2015 with a show that is definitely not PG friendly. Stay back after the home games and be floored by how good our guys look in dresses. They don't call us the prettiest club for nothing.

Entry is free for contestants. Each contestant will be allocated a coach who will help with hair/makeup/styling on the night. Apart from the obvious prize (glory) there will be prizes on the night of actual substance (ie beer, cash and a crown).

The competition is always unpredictable and it could be anyone's game on the night. You just need to have the Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent to outshine the other boys. If you think you can pick the winner of this battle, honey, you have no idea.

Mates, Rugby, Beers, men in drag, what more could you want from a Saturday night?

First Club Fundraiser

Parents, Players, Members and Supporters,

We would like to introduce our first fundraiser for Old Collegians Rugby Club for the 2015 South Australian Rugby Season:

10 LAP FUN RUN

"To Upgrade Club Visual and Audio Equipment"

WE ARE CALLING ON All PLAYERS FROM (UNDER 5'S TO PREMIER GRADE), SOCIAL MEMBERS AND FAMILY MEMBERS FROM ALL GRADES TO JOIN IN THE FUN RUN THIS YEAR.

$1.00 per Lap per Sponsor for 10 laps is the aim of the sponsorship drive.

WEDNESDAY 27th May 2015 @ 6pm AT TREGENZA OVAL

Our aim for the event is to raise the $10,000.00 needed to purchase a new big screen TV and upgrade the Club's old and currently very tired audio system. This wonderful initiative allows us to incorporate our fabulous new balcony area, create an amazing viewing experience for televised games and game reviews. Being a WORLD CUP year this up-grade will improve the overall experience for members, families and players at our club functions and events.

This event will be a sponsored run and a sponsor form will be attached with this email letter. All monies are to be collected by Wednesday 3rd June and brought to the club and handed to the Club Registrar Simone Linder-Patton or the Club Secretary Sue Thewlis.

The person who raises the most sponsorship money will be awarded a "Wallabies Jersey" in their size for their efforts. There will also be a mystery jersey awarded to the person who shows the best club spirit on the night of the run.

We are running this event on Wednesday Night 27th May 2015 at 6.00pm instead of normal junior training.

All parents, family members, sponsors and friends are invited to come and cheer the players on and enjoy a drink and some nibbles in the club house. We will need volunteers to check off the laps of the participants.

This event is to encourage bonding between the players from all grades and an opportunity for the club to come together for a common purpose of fun, exercise, and fundraising. What a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of our Club Culture and Community Spirit.

I hope you can join us on the night and support "YOUR"> Club.

Please find a Fun Run Sponsorship form that is available for you to print off or alternatively there will be forms available to collect from the Club House.

Good luck and see you all on the night, A Big "Thank You" for your support

    Old Collegians March Newsletter 2015

Welcome to the 2015 rugby year.

First let me say what an honour and privilege it is to have taken on this role for the club.

Secondly, I must thank Kim Evans and the various committees for their tireless and productive efforts over the past ten years. They left the club in good shape.

A new organisational structure has been introduced this year through the formation of sub-committees reporting to the general committee. The sub-committees cover catering, events, house & grounds, rugby, communications, sponsorship, merchandise and first aid. One of the first tasks this year was to understand the full impact of the new ARU / SARU participation, development and insurance fees.

These fees have increased substantially and will make this year a challenging one from a financial perspective. The new fee structures are in place and the committee has kept the necessary increases to a minimum. The club has installed Wi-Fi for use by members for online registration and for use throughout the year by financial members.

A defibrillator has been kindly donated by the Glenside Lions.

House and Grounds have commenced on improvements to the balcony area.

Lights will be added to the western side of the oval shortly and later in the year the eastern lights will be upgraded.

The club and council are working closely together continually striving for improvement to the playing surface.

Membership cards will be provided this year to enable our sponsors to deliver benefits to our members and business to our sponsors.

I would like all supporters to become social club members.

Funds from social membership assists in the provision of facilities for the playing group as well as improvements to the clubhouse and general surrounds.

The rugby committee is working hard toward another successful year on the pitch with pre-season training well underway.

Play hard and play to win but play fairly and be respectful of all opponents and officials.

I wish you all a successful and enjoyable 2015 season.

    Yours in Rugby,

    John Denley
