The Adelaide Black Falcons got the 2003 Australian Rugby Shield campaign off to a great start beating the Melbourne Axemen at Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide (9 - 5). The Falcons then travelled to Darwin to defeat the Mosquitos 25-17 and record their second win. Try scorers for the Falcons were Fullback Andy McDougall from Old Collegians, winger Tim Lough from Burnside and Loosehead Prop Christian Tedge, also from Old Collegians. Following from the victory over Melbourne it looked like we could be heading the semis...

The third game was played at Woodville due to poor pitch surface at Bailey, against Perth Gold who were undefeated at that stage. Perth Gold came from behind to win 31-30. The Falcons led 20-5 at half time and extended that lead to 27-5, but three tries from Perth in the last 12 minutes saw the victory thrown away. The Falcons lost a couple of last minute opportunities, with Aaron Mattin missing field goal attempt, followed by a knock on metres from the line. The Falcons were very unlucky to lose the game after having lead for 78 minutes. Matt Nicholls, the Operations Manager for the Falcons, said "It would have been great to win. We certainly had our chances and we'll definitely look back on it as the one that got away.">

In the final game against NSW Country Cockatoos, the Falcons were trounced in a 48-7 match played in Port Macquarie. Adelaide had had cause for optimism after their narrow loss to Perth and the Cockatoos' surprise loss to Melbourne. However, from the outset of the game NSW Country showed themselves dominant in scrums, lineouts and every other facet of the game. The loss spelled the end of what had seemed to be promising season for Adelaide.

Pictured are Tiana Hume, Tara Niage, Lusia Raikiwasa, Kim Evans and Elysha Skipper who played for SA's women's team in the Southern States competition in June. Tara scored a try and Lusia knocked the NSW country halfback out cold. Congratulations also to Sally Renfrey and Liz Dean who were selected but unable to play due to injury/illness.
