Membership
At a meeting of February 7th 1956 the Minutes record that "in future that Members of Recognised Public Schools of the British Commonwealth, Officers of Army Training Schools and Rugby Players from Interstate be eligible to become members of the club."
At the same meeting the Secretary "reported that the oval in Frome Road was not available to the Rugby Club as it was used by the YMCA and the Adelaide Technical School."
In the Minutes of the Management Committee Meeting held at St. Peters College Mission on Tuesday 9th April 1957, the constitution was amended to read that membership would be drawn from:
"
- i Ex-members of Public Schools other than those operated entirely by the State Education Authorities.
- ii Students, or former students, of Australian Universities.
- iii For the purpose of paragraph two ii, Duntroon, Flinders Naval College, Point Cook, and Portsea Armed Service Colleges are considered as Universities.
- iv In the case of overseas personnel, such names are to be submitted to a sub-committee of the SARU appointed for this purpose by the Management Committee."
By the 1970s, club membership had to be controlled and carefully documented to satisfy not only the requirements of the Club but also those of the licencing laws. Prospective members were nominated for membership, the nomination was seconded and a management committee approved, or in some cases, rejected the nomination.
Members were nominated and approval given by committee:
When applications were rejected, the rejection was seen to reflect not only on the person proposed for membership but also on those who proposed the member.
Difficulties were created between committee members where disagreements occurred.
In July 1974, Dinny Farrah protested to the Committee about the rejection of one particular nominee, the way that rejection was handled and the lack of notification of either an acceptance or a rejection to two other nominees, one of whom had already paid his fees. Dinny was prepared to leave the Club over the issues and in particular over the rejection of the proposed member. His brother Peter tendered his resignation on the 5th of July. The Committee wrote to Dinny expressing the hope that they would resolve the difficulties at the August meeting.
