From the Tregenza Times of 21st February 1989:
Welcome to the 1989 season
Michael von Berg as well as being the first team coach has also taken on the role of Director of Coaching.
Mike will coordinate the activities of coaches in the other grades and it is hoped that coaches will soon be appointed to the second and third sides. Terry Jenkins and Tony Spawton have expressed interest in the positions. All three were Front Row Forwards what a wealth of talent and brains! We also have managers for firsts and thirds and are actively seeking people to fill the remaining positions. This year we shall be running a fifth team in the form of a side from the Adelaide Casino who are entered as another side in the fourth division.
We extend a warm welcome to them and look forward a long, happy and successful relationship. The force behind the team is John Kobek who will act as coordinator for the team. Some of the ground rules which have been established by the rugby committee for the coming season are;
1. Training will start at 6.15pm. every Tuesday and Thursday. An early start will mean an early finish. Members of the first three teams will be expected to train twice per week.
2. Selection will be based upon attendance as well as performance.
3. Members of the fourth team must train at least once per week. Plavers training on Thursday will not be taken off during games to allow players who have not trained to play.
4. Teams will be posted by Tuesday each week.
5. Juniors will train before the Seniors on Thursdays in an attempt to make players and parents feel they are an equally important part of the club.
Good luck for the coming season let's support our coaches, selectors and team-mates as much as we can.
There are three important components in the make up of successful players;
FITNESS SKILL and ATTITUDE
IT'S THE THIRD ONE THAT NEEDS WORKING AT.
LETS BEGIN THE SEASON IN A POSITIVE FRAME OF MIND BY SUPPORTING THE POINTS ABOVE
SEASON COMMENCES SAT APRIL 9
Tregenza Times 26th January 1989:
The 1st XV Coach this year is Michael Von Berg, who is also the club's Director of Coaching. Most players should have received a letter from Michael, but for the benefit of all members whose support is vital here is a digest.
There is no basic lack of talent - it just has to be developed. To this end Michael will be assisted by Sean Beaton, particularly in back play, and two other former rugby players - Dr. Terrence Sheppard, a sports psychologist, and Bob Kearney, a qualified physical training instructor. Training will be short, concentrated, varied and with an emphasis on basic skill training. All players are expected to attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.15-8 p.m. The objective where possible is to play 15 man running rugby. (Attractive for the spectators and rewarding for the wingers.) The ultimate objective is four teams in the finals.
