Ryan Hoffman
Ryan Hoffman is playing for the Melbourne Storms.
Ryan played in our juniors in about 1997-98 with Gus James, James Hopkins and co and was the recipient of one of our scholarships to the Reds Camp. As Jesse says "They don't always stay with us, but we do have some good cattle out there".
Date of Birth: 26th January 1984
Position: Second RowHeight: 192 cm
Weight: 100 kg
Debut: 2003
Preview '05
Earmarked for greatness from an early age, Ryan was an outstanding junior who is well on his way to establishing himself in the NRL. Has played much of his first grade football off the bench, but following the departure of former skipper Stephen Kearney he has worked hard to earn a starting spot. The talented ball player appears to be benefiting from his first full pre-season and he looms as a constant threat down Storm's left side attack. Hoffy played his 50th NRL game against the Roosters in Round 20 and with his talent and commitment looks likely to play many more.
Career
Started playing rugby league as a five-year-old for Campbelltown Collegians, before moving to Adelaide because of his father's work commitments. He played soccer in Adelaide, before returning to league in Sydney and then New Zealand. In 1998 he captained Campbelltown Collegians before starting with the Western Suburbs junior side. Ryan's representative career started early making the NSW under-17s, under-19s and Australian Schoolboys side. He made his first grade debut for Storm in 2003.

AFL Grand Final night

Referees
Our UNDER 14s succeeded in their Semi-Final against Souths on Sunday 4th 2005, galloping into the Grand Final.
Unfortunately, the players were let down by someone on the sideline. Old Collegians was penalised three times for the conduct of a supporter and marched back a total of 30m.
The sideline and touch-judge believed a punch had been thrown by a Souths player. The Ref had seen the incident himself and judged it to be lawful ripping of the ball. The Souths player had knocked the ball on anyway and an OC scrum was awarded.
The Souths player was asked by the Ref to be careful of his ripping style. Before the scrum packed down abuse from the OC sideline led to our players being sent back 10m. There was a lot of dissent from the sideline to which the Ref took no offence, however unacceptable abuse from one person in particular drew the penalty.
Being too busy haranguing the Ref to consider his own conduct, the abuse continued and caused OCs to be walked back again and then again.
Referees are volunteers who do their best and we have great difficulty in securing enough referees in SA. Even if the Ref is clearly in error, abuse/questioning will never alter the decision and can set the Ref against our team. An abusive player/supporter prejudices his own team, embarrasses his club and discourages people from taking up refereeing. It is foolish conduct and is unbecoming of an Old Collegian regardless of the circumstances.
Our thanks and congratulations go to the 14 year old players who had better discipline, sense and manners than one of their adult supporters. In the Grand Finals, let's show that Old Collegians are not merely good sportsmen, but also good sports.

Frat Party
.... no, not an entire keg per person ... editor
Each year, the South African community come to Tregenza for a BBQ and a scratch match against any OC member (old/young/male/female) who is up for it! Bring your family, picnic rug, chair and food, but the bar is open so please do not BYO grog.
We had great fun at the Frat Party after defeating Burnside. Old Collegians was full of nerds, jocks and cheerleaders enjoying the free beer and watching the Wallabies and the Springboks on the big screen, followed by various movies.
Quiz Night, 5th August 2005
We held a Quiz Night at the clubrooms on Friday, 5th August .
Eight tables competed to be recognised as the brains-trust of the club. Good fun was had by all, puzzling over "bogging" and "coprophilia", humming familiar tunes trying to recall the lyrics, and randomly guessing the publication date of the first volume of Das Kapital.
After a strong start the table of Frocs and their friends slipped to the middle of the order, while the First Grade floundered, eventually drawing for last. First place was shared by the tables of Bradelys/Thewlises/Apteds/Finns and McDougalls/Church/Butler&friends.
The first prize was decided by a "knock out true or false", the winners being the Clan McDougall.
Congratulations to all, and thanks to Peter "Jesse" James and assistants for running the night.
Women's State Team
All 12 of the OC girls who were up for selection made the 24 woman travelling squad. They're away from the 8th to the 14th of August.
Those from OCs selected are:
Rebecca Derbyshire-Lloyd, Elizabeth Gabb, Kim Evans, Kristie Hume, Rebecca Manson, Kelly O'Neill, Tara Naige, Lusia Raikiwasa, Kate Reynolds, Belinda Wade, Naomi Woodstock and Zoe Woodstock
Women's 10th Anniversary - the day
The Women's 10th Anniversary carnival started with a 60 minute "barbarians" game to select the state team. It was a good tough game, but odd for players to see team mates on the other side. They were mostly asked to play out of position, so that the coach could gauge their versatility and ability to perform under pressure.
Afterwards, a BBQ with Angoves cleanskins and commemorative Tshirts, reading "Women Play Rugby - Chicks Watch". They raised money for the state team, looked over 10 years' worth of photos and hashed over old stories and memories.
The photo below of Belinda Wade dressed up as a Warrior Woman (the state team is known as the Southern Warriors) was a ploy to sell raffle tickets.

Hong Kong Sevens
Collegians Tara Naige, Kim Evans, Bec Manson, Andrew Schwilk and Sally Renfrey (along with various friends) had a great time at the Hong Kong Sevens in March and are slowly beginning to show signs of sobering up. The group enjoyed the Sevens so much (or at least, that's what the photos seem to suggest - their individual memories are a little blurry) that they are planning their trip back for the 2006 HK7s. If you are keen to join them, let them know - the more the merrier!
FREE KEG FOR BEST TEAM!
The Old Collegian team which best supports the club's bar in 2005 will win a keg of beer at the end of the season to be
announced at Presentation Night. Every time you buy a drink (alcoholic or otherwise) you will receive a "tally ticket".
You simply drop it in the Tally Box of your choice, located above the bar. As before, tickets may be deducted for
indiscretions such as non-payment of subs. There will be six boxes, one for each of the men's teams, one for the
women and one for the social members.

EDDIE JONES AT SARU COACHING COURSE
Eddie Jones, the coach of the Wallabies, was the star attraction at the Advanced Coaching Course run by SA Rugby Union and held at Old Collegians in March. The course was presented by Jones and the SARU Coach Education Manager Warren Robilliard. It was very successful, attended by 32 coaches from across Adelaide. Eddie used the boys from the SA Rugby Academy to demonstrate various drills and skills. That included our own Harley Janssen, shown left in a photo from the Sunday Mail tackling Eddie Jones himself!

Richard Waddicor gets stitched
If you see our registrar, Richard Waddicor, around the clubrooms, please take note of the shiny pink scar on his forehead. Anyone who has ever played rugby with Richard will have noticed a certain tenacity and competitiveness about the way he plays. After all these years, someone finally split his head open. To add insult to injury, it was Kate Reynolds, the lithe blonde dynamo of the Frocs' backline. They collided on the Oztag field and her bony little elbow won the encounter. Richard left the field spurting blood while Kate merrily played on. Stitches were called for!

Rokobaros
A Message from the Rokobaros:
Alex has completed his first week at Marists and Ben is in rugby heaven with plans to watch the Reds vs Brumbies on Sat.!!
".. Ashgrove, which we are next to, reminds me of Unley with hills but we don't have the money to match the lifestyle!!.."
Next Saturday is rego day at GPS which will be the club for Ben and Alex at least for 3 years but we know where their loyalties are in SA.
Best of luck to everyone for a great 2005.
Elizabeth 7s
Old Collegians fielded teams in both the men's and women's competitions in the Elizabeth Sevens on 5 March 2005.
The men's team had mixed results and did not make it to the semi-finals, but it was a great opportunity for existing players to get in their first hits of the season and for the club's new blood to have their first taste of rugby with Old Collegians. The men's team consisted of Michael Bell, Craig de Carle, Peter Cross, Tim Green, Quinten Manuel, Sam Pilkington , Tom Pilkington, Leigh Rebbeck, Charlie Shepperd, Ben Suttell, Christian Tedge and Jeremy Thewlis. There were some great moments from everyone, including great tries from Peter Cross, a runaway try from Jeremy Thewlis and some great work at the ruck by Michael Bell. Thanks to all the boys who turned up and played.
In the Semi-Finals, Port Adelaide defeated Burnside and University defeated Brighton. The final was then won by University, defeating Port Adelaide 24 to 12.
University played very well all day, and thoroughly deserved their unexpected success. University is not fielding a first grade team this year but their performance in the Elizabeth Sevens suggests they will be a force in the second grade!
The women's team consisted of Katherine Cherry, Candice Daniel, Liz Dean, Rebecca Derbyshire-Lloyd, Kim Evans, Tara Naige, Kelly O'Neill, Kate Reynolds, Naomi Woodstock and Zoë Woodstock. It was a pity that only three clubs fielded women's teams in the sevens, but realistically it was only those three teams who would have been competitive in any event. The Frocs drew their first game against Souths (a horrible echo from last year's final) and barely lost to Burnside thanks to a try by Burnside after the final siren, Lemony Snicketts style - due only to a "a series of unfortunate events". However, in the final Burnside proved they did not need luck to win, beating the Frocs convincingly on the scoreboard despite the relatively even game. The Frocs played better sevens rugby than they have for a few years, thanks to the coaching efforts of Kath Cherry and the very valuable assistance from Glen Miller (despite teaching the girls an obsolete and illegal scrum bind!).

Willing helpers answer the call
.. Samantha Maiden, Tom Richardson
DOCTORS, nurses, counsellors and engineers are being urged to volunteer to help the long-term aid operation in tsumani-devastated areas across Asia.
Australian Volunteers International confirmed yesterday it was dealing with about one call a minute as 2000 people offered to register to assist the relief mission.
And the Department of Health and Ageing said about 4300 volunteers had also registered through the tsunami hotline.
Among those who inundated phone lines with their services yesterday was Luke Callaghan, 24, of Adelaide.
"I don't even know if they'll want me - I just knew I wouldn't have enough cash to fly over there myself if I went for a couple of months to lend a hand," he said.
Mr Callaghan, who studied medicine at Adelaide University before moving into research, said he would go "wherever I'm needed".
"Everyone I know who's in trouble is someone's mate, or someone's mum, or someone's dad - I just wanted to see if I could do anything to help."

While some of us play Oztag over summer, David "Elvis" King and Ryan "Boo Boo" Neilson (shown left) are playing gridiron for the Razorbacks. Kingy has played before but Boo Boo is a rookie.
Don't get too used to the padding, boys! Or the tights, for that matter. Always supportive, the Frocs are happily trying to arrange a "charity" match with the cheerleaders, but somehow it seems unlikely.

Annual General Meeting, 9th December 2004
Congratulations to Kim Evans, our new President for 2005.
And congratulations to Ted Apted our outgoing President. Ted has been President of Collegians for the years 2000 to 2004, equal to that of H. N. Hirst from 1951 to 1955 and Hamish Cranna from 1995 to 1999, with a year in-between from Denzil Church. However, H. J. Rogers has been President for the most number of years being non-consecutive over the years 1961 to 1973.
Both Ted and now Kim have joined that unique list of Collegians who have taken on the role of President.

Old Collegians Open - Report
3rd Annual Old Collegians Open
Tanunda Pines Golf Club
An encouraging turn out of 31 players competed at the Tanunda Pines Golf Club on Sunday 6th February 2005 for the 3rd Annual Old Collegians Open.
The format this year was 18 holes of Ambrose - if you do not hit a good shot then you put your partners under a lot of pressure, similar to missing a tackle in rugby. Seven groups of four and one group of three competed.
President Kim Evans was on hand to keep the groups in check and to be the "drinks bitch" (her words).
It was also pleasing to see Ted Apted (former President) in attendance for the day. Ted accompanied one of the groups around the course on foot (he must be in training for a come back).
As per usual, we underestimated the thirst of the Old Collegians and had to purchase more on course drinks as the day progressed. The golf club was extremely generous in providing this sustenance at a heavily discounted rate to ensure that we did not run at a loss. At the conclusion of the round Ted Apted, ably assisted by Peter Allen, Danny McCarten and Bruce McDougall stoked up the barbie and we all sat down to well earned meal.
Ryan "Booboo" Neilsen and Tom Secker had arranged to play with a 12 handicapper (Peter Denley) and a 5 handicapper (James Swift). This made their group clear favourites for the event. Another strong contender for the title was the group of Craig de Carle, Richard Czeglik and Craig's mate Mick, playing as a three to avoid the extra distraction of a fourth player (I think it was so that they could get back to the bar first).
Submission of the cards at the conclusion of the day revealed a clear winner. A team with the unlikely names of Jimbo, Beno, Chado and Leono bolted from the blue with a gross score of 67 (5 under par). This was the same gross score as the more fancied team of Swift, Denley, Booboo and Secker. However, after taking handicaps into account the former team won by more than five strokes.
Third place went to Craig, Mick and Czeza who by this time were in the clubhouse for so long that they did not care who had won. Golf was the winner on the day. Fashion pulled up the rear. Third place received a selection of prizes donated by Gordon Hazzard (a loyal supporter of Old Collegians and the golf day). Second place received three Nike golf balls each and the winners a bottle of Rockford Cabernet.
Each participant in the day received a ticket in a raffle. The prize was a magnum of 1999 Rockford Home Block Cabernet. A well-known wine identity, present on the day, estimated it to be worth at least 750,000 something or rathers. Verification of this value is obviously not possible but it is a great, great wine. The winner was Tedgey (enjoy).
A raffle for a second magnum of Rockford Cabernet raised an additional $100 for the day. Andrew McDougall won this second raffle.
At the conclusion of the presentation, John Denley from Pro-Time presented President Kim with a cheque for $750 dollars being this year's sponsorship.

Chinese New Year
On 12th February we welcomed in the Chinese New Year for the fifth year in a row. This year is the year of the Rooster, a year of happiness, colour and drama which should be tempered with common sense. There's a Chinese saying, "If you take a step back, you will find the sea and the sky are boundless."
In keeping with Chinese tradition and principles of feng shui, the club was filled with Chinese decorations in red and gold to bring luck and prosperity, with a fish above the bar to bring wealth and a dragon over the trophy cabinet to bring glory and protection. This year was bigger than usual, with a healthy spread of roughly 300 club members, players, friends and neighbours wandering in to enjoy the festivities.
Traditional Chinese food was provided by the wonderful chefs who have catered all of our Chinese New Year parties.
Typically, the food sold out in record time!
The kids always enjoy the night and particularly the breaking of a piñata not entirely a traditional Chinese custom). Kim was caught in the four-deep riot of marauding children when the chocolate fell, while Joyce looked on and assessed their tenacity and speed with recruitment for our junior teams in mind! The fireworks display was, as always, very popular and seems to get better every year.
The traditional Lion Dance display was the best yet. The tired old lion of previous years has been fired and the new troupe was full of daring, athleticism and humour. A great start to the year!
